LS shipped from Green Bay.
The Panthers have acquired J.J. Jansen from Green Bay in return for a conditional 7th round pick for 2011. J.J. Jansen is an undrafted free agent that spent the entire last year on IR. This move reduces the already slim chances that we will see Jason Kyle back next year due to the salary cap issues.
The pick is conditional on these terms. If JJ becomes our long snapper, they get the pick. If he doesn't, we keep our pick.

Quite a bit...
Jansen cost $201K against the cap last year; Kyle was up at $912K. That’s a 78% savings!

That's more than I would have thought
That’s not chump change even by NFL standards

They could only be saving $150,000 towards the cap
“Jansen, acquired in a trade with Green Bay Monday, will count just $310,000 against the cap this year.
They could conceivably offer Kyle a one-year deal for the veteran minimum ($845,000) along with a $50,000 signing bonus. Known as a "minimum salary benefit" deal, it would count just $460,000 against the salary cap.
Though he’s logged 15 years in the league and hasn’t fallen off as a player, Kyle said he wasn’t above contemplating such an offer.
"I’d consider anything, but they haven’t put anything out there," Kyle said when asked about a minimum offer. "If they do find a way to deal Pep, they wouldn’t have to crunch the numbers quite so tight.
"But it’s a business decision, and I know from having businesses of my own you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. I love playing for coach (John) Fox and Marty (Hurney, the general manager). But I know they’re not making personal decisions, this is business."
That the Panthers can’t bring Kyle back for the difference in $150,000 worth of cap room is telling, but not the only example."

Still...
one of the key words there is “contemplating” such an offer. The guy’s probably got plenty of pride, and taking a pay cut after doing your job well for so long isn’t exactly an attractive proposal.

I think it's just another victim of the Julius Peppers situation.
Our hands are tied here. We still have a chance of getting him back if he survives till draft day when a trade using Peppers will probably happen, but it doesn’t look good. Still, it’ll be hard not to laugh when a football goes flying a hundred feet into the air over the punter, and all he can do is stare and scratch his head.
Julius Peppers wants to get cut so bad. It’s not going to happen though. The Panthers are going to stay the course, and when they get those high draft picks it will all be worth it.

So we paid the same amount for our long-snapper
as we did our back-up QB? (7th rd pick). Interesting…I think it says a lot about how Fox-Hurney look to fill the QB slots

Or...
it says a lot about the situations these players were in. We were able to underpay for McCown because the Dolphins had no use for him and wanted to offload his salary and the roster spot. With our finish of 12-4 last year, we had to overpay for Jansen because we would have been way low on the priority list to claim him even once he got cut.

long snapper
I think the move says the consideration of value they place on secondary roles. Neither the back up QB or this new guy have proven they can play so why not use the lowest bid.
Also do you not find it interesting that everyone cries big money peppers is holding us back, handcuffing us. Although this is a large portion of money against the cap its not the only money we could possibly use. I belive they could resturcture Jakes contract to free up some money and they havent jumpped on that.
Seems to me that if the panthers wanted to act in free agency they would have made all moves to free up more money. If jake wasnt possible trade bait dont you think they would have made that move to sign him to the extension? Makes me think they are content waiting until the draft unless some one shows up or calls to make a deal then signing whoever is left on the table afterwards.
Jason Kyles’ proformance was outstanding during the regular season so the new guy has a high bar to reach if hes not considered a bust.

Does it make sense?
If we extend Delhomme for three or four years and end up getting a value QB who drops, what then? Cut him a couple years from now and face a lot of dead money on the cap?
by MichaelProcton on Apr 15, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They will wait till after the draft to extend him if at all
