Cutler to Carolina Now Not So Crazy

Wow, I really never thought the Broncos would consider trading Jay Cutler but it seems he has given the team the cold shoulder:

"Numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by head coach Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful. A conversation with his agent earlier today clearly communicated and confirmed to us that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos. We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded."

So could he actually end up in Carolina? I'd have to give it an outside chance at best but stranger things have happened. I can't imagine how a trade might work and it may require a third team, say the Jets. Here;s a wild scenario: Broncos get Peppers, Jets get Cutler and a late pick from the Broncos and the Panthers get the Jets first rounder and two other picks. Everybody is happy. I'm sure someone can come up with various scenario's that make sense.

Everybody is happy that is except those in the mile high altitude. You'll see a mixed of shock and indignation over at the Mile High Report.

I'm still shocked at how badly this scenario has played out for Josh McDaniels. He can't blame anyone but himself as it was widely reported Cutler went to their last meeting wanting to bury the hatchett and instead got dissed. In the end McDaniels folly will be some other teams gain. Why not the Panthers?

Go for it.

Peppers (& Delhomme?) for Cutler and a pick.
Or something like that.

That said

the way he’s handled this has me a bit worried.

I agree. I think if the Panthers made the trade for Cutler (which I hope they are able to), they would need to include Delhomme in the deal. You can’t just have your former franchise quarterback sitting on the bench. You’d need a clean break to move on, and the Broncos would likely need a quarterback involved in the trade as well. I think Peppers and Delhomme for Cutler and maybe a 5th rounder sounds good.

Broncos fan here

What would you be willing to give up for Jay?

Delhomme would be good for Cutler

I would give up Peppers and other random stuff for Cutler. I would give up Delhomme and Peppers for Cutler, definitely, but I would hope we had someone left on the roster who could teach Cutler about being an emotional wimp. Delhomme could teach Cutler a thing or two, but we couldn’t afford to keep both.

I think by trading Cutler, McDaniels is blowing it and will be fired in two years. I’m sorry, but if my new boss only does one thing in his first few months in office, kiss the QBs ass and give in to his demands, I wouldn’t work hard for him. Wait until you see some draft picks hold out, or other guys demand trades. McDaniels should have said Cutler is our QB, and that’s that. Then when Cutler said anything else, McDaniels should have told him to come practice and earn the right to talk. The way the Bengals handled Ocho Cinco last year is how the Broncos should’ve handled Cutler.

But I’ll gladly take him, and I know Fox and Smitty’s right hook can handle Cutler’s emotions.

Jay Cutler is not that great

Jay Cutler is egotistical and doesn’t really care about the team! He thinks he all that…offending John Elway the way he did…he thinks he is the best QB in this league…i think he is not the kind of character I see on this Panther team…this is not what Carolina is about…we need high character guys and not whiney little boys with ego problems.

by natalyas82 on Apr 1, 2009 8:05 AM EDT reply actions

I vote yes!

All the contending teams have their franchise qb at center, see Steelers, Patriots, Colts, as a few examples. The Panthers need one, one is available, get him.

The lunatic fringe wins again.

I put the odds at 1 in 31 of Cutler coming to Carolina

But that one chance is intriguing. I think it a QB switch and moving Peppers somewhere for a couple picks would energize the franchise and the fan base. I would hate to see Delhomme leave but … it make the Panthers NFC contenders…something a lot of people outside the Carolinas aren’t saying right now.

Redskins supposedly in the lead right now

they can offer picks (surprising that they still have some!), and Jason Campbell.

I dont know if I’d want Cutler. I think he handled it wrong, and I think McDaniels probably could of done a few things differently too, but what McD did do was send a message to all his other players. Cutler seems like a whiney b*tch to me, and Bus Cook seems like hes orchestrated this whole fiasco for his own gain while taking the Broncos and their QB down. If Cutler came here we’d have to deal with Cook too. I think Cutlers a puppet on Cooks strings. If Cutler gets this pissy over the fact that the team was entertaining trade scenarios, imagine the drama he could unleash on something/anything else? Were sitting here discussing trading Delhomme for Cutler, and while I understand we arent the Head Coach and Owner, Im sure Delhommes not crying. Delhomme would handle this situation with character and maturity, and even with last years horrible nightmare game, I’d still take character and maturity over a whiney b*tch!

Peter king seems to think 1 in 7

It is intriguing. However, I’m a Carolina Panthers fan, therefore I’m very used to having high expectations only to see them shattered.

From

Yahoo!

Here’s another team expected to have some cursory interest, but doesn’t appear to have the ammunition to mount a serious push. Carolina has no first-round pick, and while Jake Delhomme is nearing the end of his career, it’s unlikely the Panthers would be willing to mortgage future drafts and go consecutive years without a first-rounder. The one intriguing thought: Julius Peppers. He wants to play in a 3-4 defense, and Denver is in the process of moving into that scheme. Peppers is surely a player Denver would be interested in, and trading a quarterback for another cornerstone at defensive end makes sense. However, coach John Fox seemed adamant at the owner’s meetings that Carolina wasn’t looking to move Peppers. If he changes his mind, the Panthers could quickly become a frontrunner, even if they can’t get a quarterback in return as part of a deal.

by UtesFan89 on Apr 1, 2009 1:14 PM EDT reply actions

I think the only way a deal could happen that involved Carolina

Would be if a third team got involved, say Arizona? Of course it’s to spit ball proposals for Cutler, but look at this one:

Denver gets: Jake Delhomme; Arizona’s 1st round pick

Arizona gets: Julius Peppers

Carolina gets: Jay Cutler; Arizona’s 3rd/4th round pick

by ChipperTeixeira89 on Apr 1, 2009 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

it’s >>>easy<<< to spit ball

by ChipperTeixeira89 on Apr 1, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Arizona?

I like the thinking. But in all seriousness, Julius Peppers is not worth a 1st, 3rd, and 4th. Arizona gets the shaft.

by DailyDose on Apr 1, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

No

I mean “either or” with the whole 3rd/4th, sorry if that was misinterpreted.

by ChipperTeixeira89 on Apr 1, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Continued

As a matter of fact…

Peppers probably isn’t worth a first rounder with his new contract. The Panthers shot themselves in the foot with that one. But FA deadlines will force that on teams.

by DailyDose on Apr 1, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Reminds me of Potis for Bailey

I would love to see Cutler and a pick for Delhome and Peppers. I dont know why we would be concerned about Cutler being a baby or too emotional, when we can trade a baby that takes off plays and someone who can be too emotional to get the ball to the right team.

Cutler For Peppers

Duh…this is the most logical move. trade two disgruntled players and everybody wins.

I don’t think it’s that simple.

by ChipperTeixeira89 on Apr 1, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't want that one

Peppers has played at a higher level for a longer period of time. I’d still want a second round pick plus Cutler

Mile High Report

Man your totally right!!! They are crazy. I dont think they know what they want for him (as far as the fans), but what they are saying is outlandish. Theres some quality stuff on there but alot of clutter on the situation. But as their blogmaster outlines they would like but dont absolutly need a solid starting QB.
So why not entertain the idea of a trade with Jake and picks for Cutler. Then you still have Pep to trade for more people or picks or not. Im figuring Pep is worth more than jake would be as far as trade bait. Im not saying jake should be traded just entertaining the idea.
If they want Pep for Cutler then we would basically be saying jake we got some competition that will likely surpass you soon if not now givin he learns the book. I dont think they would bring in cutler without dealing jake somewhere, that would be a bad situation to have going in to camp. Plus i dont think Cutler would like to come here and be seen as a backup until proven otherwise. So If this is what they want we would most likely have to swing a three team trade, which makes it more complicated!!!
I just dont think we will be in the market unless this goes for awhile. If Cutler isnt taken soon the better our chances.

by hacory1 on Apr 1, 2009 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

Our chances go down

because we don’t have a first rounder.

That has to be solved somehow… are we willing to give up next year’s first rounder as well?

by UtesFan89 on Apr 1, 2009 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe we try to trade for

Jason Campbell, in a 3-way?

The Broncos would rather have D, they get Peppers (and picks).
The Redskins get Cutler.
The Panthers get Campbell (and a pick or something).
-Something like the Broncos getting 2 firsts from WAS, and the Panthers getting a 2nd or 3rd from DEN. Or the Broncos getting a 1st & a 2nd from WAS, and the Panthers getting a 3rd/4th from WAS. Or the Broncos getting a 1st from WAS and a 2nd from CAR, and the Panthers getting a 2nd from WAS. Whatever…

Campbell isn’t Cutler… that can be good (no baby-ish whining) and bad (not the same caliber QB). That said, if he can get on a team that doesn’t change their OC every year, and doesn’t force the West Coast Offense on him, he still has the potential & ability to succeed.

Peppers/Cutler

I’ve been a Panther’s fan since before Peppers, Delhomme, Smitty and a few others. The current roster is a team capable of greatness, but the choices being made are striking me a unfathomable! Why not trade Peppers, who wants to play in a 3 – 4 defense to Denver for Jay Cutler, who, along with Smitty and Moose in the open field and Williams and Stewart in the backfield, could bring us to the big game. Fox wanting to stick with Jake, who is inconsistent to say the least and easily rattled, is insane. Jake has his pros, but his time is coming and it’s not that far off. Trade Peppers and maybe Jake to the Broncos in a 2 way trade. If it calls for a 3-way, I like the idea True Blue Jazz came up with….throw in a few draft picks and Jason Campbell. Lets be real, we have a young team with some older vets in there to bring that mentorship to the team. But we need some younger, teachable, ready to lead and show out players in key positions….QB being one of them. With Campbell, we’ll have that QB with wildcat offense potential. With Cutler, we’ll have that precision and accuracy and consistency we need.

I'm d-N-b, I'll make ya famous!!!!

FYI, Cutler is gone to the Bears, if anyone reads this.

Wow.

Two 1st rounders, a 3rd, and Neckbeard?

Wow- I really like Cutler, but that is steep.

However, the Bears now have a pretty legit offense with Cutler/Forte.

Now back to guessing what happens with Pepers.
