"Peppers to Pats Laughable" says Fox
Fox: Peppers-to-Patriots 'almost laughable'
"Julius Peppers being traded to the Patriots did not happen at the NFL owners' meetings. New England doesn't have the cap room to absorb Peppers's $16.68 million franchise tag salary, and yesterday Carolina Panthers coach John Fox called the reported trade that would have sent Peppers to the Patriots for a second-round pick "almost laughable." Fox disputed the perception that the Panthers would have to dump Peppers from a cap standpoint."This article is from the NFL Truth and Rumors section of CNNSI.COM. Here's my take, and I think me and Foxy see eye to eye. What makes it laughable is the Peppers for a 2nd rounder portion. Peppers for a 2nd rounder is idiotic. Since he's not under contract, if the Pats sign him, they have to give up 2 1st rounders. We can't trade him because technically he's not a Panther. If he was a Panther, he would not be traded for less than a 1st rd pick and one additional 1st day pick, either this year or next. That's my theory. So if you read between the lines, Fox isn't saying a trade to NE is laughable, but a trade involving an unsigned but franchised All-Pro for a 2nd rounder is laughable. I see what Fox is up to, and I'm calling his bluff.

I never considered that deal to be serious
I’d rather have pep come back which I admit is quite a reversal of my opinion just a few weeks ago.

Pep's return
I would be happy for peppers to return at this point as well, but I have to go back to can the team be better with Peppers and no new additions or would be a better team with the extra cap space spent on several other players.
In reality I think that is what it comes down to which way is the team better off next year

Theres no reason why the Panthers can't draft 5 players
that can make this roster. They could draft a DE, DT, 2 OL and a CB that could all make the roster and provide the needed depth.

Well except for the fact
that the Panthers scouting/drafting after the first round has been horrible.

What about . . .
Drafted players like:
- Richard Marshall
- Charles Godfrey
- Jeff King
- Hangartner
- Jenkins
- Conner (not yet determined)
- Charles Johnson
- Dwayne Jarrett (not yet determined)
- Kallil
- Wharton
- Steve Smith
Or free agents and trades like:
- Keydrick Vincent
- Chris Harris
- Kemo
- Lewis
- Moose

Yeah, I wouldn't call it horrible
They’ve had hits and misses no worse than any other team. I actually overall the Fox regime has done pretty good but not great since he arrived. You could add Will Witherspoon and Deon Grant to that list I think. Moose too, Kris Mangum (7th), Rucker (2nd)

Did HurFox pick
Smith?
Marshall was a first round talent that slid.
King has, in my eyes, been a disappointment. That’s how I explain taking Rosario & Barnridge the next w years.
Connor was a first/second rounder that really slid.
Charles Johnson was another slider… one the team seemed to ignore until last year.
Jarrett is, so far, a bust. And a slider.
They’ve got a couple of hits, but they’re not consistently taking the players that’ll help them. And for every good pick, we see a couple of James Anderson/Rashad Butler 3rd rounds that really make you scratch your head.
More so than the elite drafting teams (Pitt, etc.)… which the Panthers need to be if they’re not going to be making splashes in FA with guys that aren’t already “over the hill,” or so injury prone that you really have to wonder how much they’ll help.

No, we got Smitty the year before Fox arrived
As bad a Siefert was he did give us the best draft class in Panther history in 2001: Morgan, Jenkins, Smith, 1, 2, 3 that year. Three straight Pro Bowlers. We need another one of those years.

That remains to be seen I believe
but I like your optimism. Stewart & Otah look the part but that 3rd one is certainly up in the air between Godfrey and Conner.

Dan Conner is solid
I hope he plays a bigger role this year however.

It is more important to . . .
Make the team better for the long haul and not JUST next year. We have a lot of potential next year, but we MUST get a lot of compensation if Peppers were to leave.
