Panthers in contract talks with Delhomme
Everyones favorite quarterback may get an extension.
The Panthers’ firm commitment to Delhomme as their starting quarterback comes despite increased criticism from fans following his six-turnover performance in Carolina’s 33-13 home playoff loss to Arizona on Jan. 10.

Make him work for it
I don’t know his contract situation well but I am always for the whole, “We will talk about it once we see how you are doing.” That is probably the best way. I like our backups but if we did get any more support, I think the nerves he has probably built up from his poor performance and some of the fans’ outrages will relate in him working harder than ever. Then, and only then, I would give him an extension. Can’t give bonuses until you get the job done (AIG reference).

the problem is
his cap hit this year is 11 million (2009 salary is about 5 million of that). With an extension it could be lowered.

On the bright side
If the Panthers do give Jake a contract extension, it increases their salary cap amount a little more for free agency and draft signings. They already restructured his contract, I say it’s fair that they offer him a three year extension, and see what happens this season. The Panthers need the space ASAP, because the Peppers deal is like quicksand right now.

Strictly a cap move
They would prefer to let him play this season out and start anew
