If Freeman Slips Should the Panthers Jump?
I ran into a mock draft that has the Panthers taking Kansas St. QB Josh Freeman and I wondered what the Panthers would do if the big QB should actually fall that far. I agree that the chances of him actually falling to #59 are very slim, heck he might not make it past Tampa Bay at #19. At the same time he appears to be the only QB in the Panthers draft range that could actually unseat Jake Delhomme in the next season or two from his perch at the top of the depth chart. So I thought it was worth exploring. Again, we have to ignore all the experts that have Freeman going in the first round (Remember Dan Conner was expected to go late 1st round and slid to the 3rd round).
Here's what our own Mocking the Draft has to report on Freeman:
Josh Freeman
6'6, 250 pounds | Kansas State | Quarterback
Strengths: Incredible arm strength. Can make just about any deep throw. Puts a nice touch on passes and knows when to take some heat off throws. Great size and can take a hit. Never had the best offensive line protecting him and was pressured frequently. Showed during his junior season that he can be mobile rushing for 14 touchdowns. Cut down on his interceptions ever season but still needs to improve his decision making. Played in a pro-style offense, albeit mostly from the shotgun.
Weaknesses: Not quite ready to be a starting NFL quarterback because of his lack of technique and proper footwork. Rarely steps into his throws. Holds the ball too low when he drops back which nullifies any kind of quick release he would have. Deep accuracy is somewhat questionable. Took the majority of his snaps from the shotgun. Struggles when he has to throw on the move.
Final word: Freeman is an incredibly intriguing prospect. He has a powerful arm and good touch. However, he is very mechanically flawed and will need a patient quarterbacks coach. Threw 34 interceptions in 35 career games, which is troublesome. Still, some team will fall in love with his physical tools. At times his play is reminiscent of Ben Roethlisberger, but he's been too inconsistent to chance a first-round pick on.
Here's a report on Freeman' performance at the scouting combine:
Second-tier quarterbacks, Kansas State's Josh Freeman and Ball State's Nate Davis, were less than stellar in passing drills.
So what do you think Panther fans, would Josh Freeman be your next Panther QB if he is there at #59?
On a side note, SB Nation has started its official mock draft and the first three picks have been submitted with a slight surprise at the top (but I can't reveal them yet). The first post with the first three picks is coming later this week so check it out at Mocking the Draft. I'm not scheduled to make my pick for the Panthers until around April 10th so keep an eye out as I will post for suggestions when the time draws near.

If he's there
I jump.
The only player I pass on him for is Ziggy Hood (assuming Raji & Jerry are gone).
It’s close between him and some DEs (Kruger, Barwin), but I’d probably take Freeman over them unless we know Peppers won’t be here (aka… he’s already been traded).
Don't forget about Ron Brace!
The guy is a beast. Raji got more media attention, but if he’s available I would pick him for certain.

I would be okay with picking Brace
He’s a big, strong dude.

Is Brace a 2nd rounder
I was seeing 3rd round… though I haven’t looked at draft news in like years (okay fine, since the end of the combine)
I suppose
But I also hope that the Panthers eventually get an earlier pick so they can get one of the premier defensivetackle/ends.

No....No....No....
I do not like Josh, he will not be a good QB in the NFL. He will not be able to lead our team to greatness. End of story. If you need a good example of this, you don’t need to look any further than a certain Raiders QB. They were saying the same thing about him last year. Very powerful arm, but he needs to work on his mechanics.
There will be a great QB class in 2010. We should wait till that year and see where we are.

I'vew never been high on Tebow either
He’s always seemed more of an athlete than a QB, but he has one more season to prove he’s a top pick

Let's see.
Javan Snead is a guy I’m really high on if he declares. He’s the QB for Eli Manning’s old team the Ol Miss Rebels. And you have Colt of course, another guy I’m pretty high on. Tebow might be a good player, but I think he won’t make the QB transition. He’d be better as a fullback or something. Those guys will probably be the big three. Of those three, I like Snead the most.
Snead heads up a load of good underclassmen QB. If some of them declare eligibility, we might just be able to jump on one of them in the 1st round and nail our QB of the future.

Continued
Jimmy Clausen is another guy I like. He’s a QB for a team that is visibly showing signs of struggling, especially on defense. That will drive his stock down, and if he’s available in the 2nd round I would take him in a heartbeat.
Pat Devlin may also be a possibility, but I won’t really agree with him until he shows me more college film. He definitely has the arm.
Tim Hiller would be awesome. He doesn’t do anything flashy. He just goes out there and gets the job done, and he’s been improving every season.
Trust me, it’s better to wait till next year. This list goes on and on.

Don't forget
Sam Bradford from OU. He was mentioned as a top 10 pick this year before he announced he is going back to school.

Yeah! Him too.
Didn’t mention him because he’ll probably be out of our reach. If John Fox wants to be aggressive and trade up for him next year though, more power to him.

I agree with Revshawn
We don’t need a over-hyped QB plus I believe the Bucs will take him in either the first or second round so we will not have to worry about it.

The Bucs traded their 2nd rounder (and their 2010 5th) to the Browns for Winslow

If he gets by the Bucs then it depends
on what the Lions do with their first. If the go OT or LB with the #1 then they certainly get Freeman at the top of the 2nd.

I would be suprised to see the Bucs try to deal for Cutler anyway.
They need a QB, so it’s very possible that they might trade for him. He would complete their offense, that’s for sure.

Cutler is going to stay in Denver is my bet

*wouldn't

I’m still saying I want Tebow on our team.
