Panther Fans Heart WR Torry Holt
Ever since last training camp when S Terrence Holt mentioned that he would love to play on the same team as his brother Torry in Carolina, many Panther fans have held out hope that Torry could come back to his roots in NC (They both are from NC and played for NC State). Of course the Panthers ended his hope of playing with his brother when they cut Terrence but we have still held out hope of getting Torry.
That hope turned into down right excitement when the Rams cut Torry just a few days ago. So the Panthers must certainly be interested in signing Holt now that he is free to choose right? There's just one little problem with that, the Panthers have absolutely no free money to go after Holt due to the huge chunck of money tied up in the Julius Peppers franchise tag. For the first time I actually do feel like Peppers has 'crippled' this franchise, preventing them from playing in the free agent game.
Let's for a moment ignore that reality and instead consider the Panthers could use a player like Torry Holt and actually had the money to pursue him. Here's what I envision. Holt would immediately be the #2 receiver capable of stretching the field on the opposite side of Steve Smith. Would that upset current #2 receiver Muhsin Muhammad? Hardly, he is the consummate team player.Moose will play wherever the Panthers need him to play.
Would that upset the Panther offense? Err...just the opposite. The Panthers prefer Moose in the slot anyway as he essentially serves as another TE in the running game. He's a possession receiver adept at going over the middle and converting 3rd downs. Yet the biggest contribution would obviously be in the passing game. It was obvious Panthers QB Jake Delhomme had eyes for Smitty only at the end of last season, a big reason for his playoff game meltdown. If a QB focuses on one receiver too much in this league, as Jake has been guilty of for oh...what 5 out of the last 6 seasons you will get picked as we saw. With Holt on the other side Delhomme would finally have another speedster he could trust to throw the ball too when the game is on the line or the Panthers need a big play.
I know there are a lot of fans out there that would love to see the Panthers obtain Holt and I am with you on that. Hell I'd even put his brother on the roster just to make it happen. But I've avoiding talking about it too much because there doesn't seem any way for it to happen. Yet as long as he remains unsigned there is still hope right?

Receivers
The Panthers could have a plethora of kick ass receivers on the roster, but if we can’t use them in different schemes, or get the ball to them efficiently then what good is it?
I know, I know, oh me of little faith.

Come on Jinx, Holt would magically fix all that!

jinx...
I agree. I just see Holt running down the field wide open, and watching the ball float above triple-covered Smitty’s head into the arms of a safety…five times in a half.
Oh well, let’s just sit back and wait to trade up and draft Tim Tebow next year.

If we draft Tebow...
…swear to god, I’m going to fly to Germany, I’m going to find you, and I’m going to pee in your coffee. I am so not joking about that.
That is the last thing we need. I mean Tebow. Pee in your coffee is the last thing you need, so you’d better hope Tebow doesn’t show his face in the old north state.
That said, I am really curious how Jake would react to having two elite-level receivers he could trust on every down. Would he finally read through progressions? Is he capable of that as a quarterback? Hell if I know. I love him, I love his heart and his attitude, and I think he’s a fantastic human being. But he ain’t Peyton. I don’t know what value there is in finding him additional weapons. I think you’re right, he’d probably keep chucking it up for Smitty, come hell or high water.

Your hero has returned!
R3,
We do not put up with anyone who is threatens to piss in the coffee of a fellow blogger. Thanks for your response and wasting 10 seconds of my life by reading useless info. As for Holt, sign him.! Most of you guys are frightened about how Smitty is going to react to his presence. I personally do not think he will have a problem. He has been begging for some competion on the opposite side since we drafted Jarrett. Hence the locker-room confrontation in front of reporters two years ago. Hell, we just need a third receiver that can offer us what Proehl did for so many years. Whether it be Moose or Holt, this will provide us with a third down threat. That is how we can make the passing game effective. What the front office needs to do is get the deal done with New England, and give us our 1st and 2nd for Pepp. We need to start planning for the future, fuck JP and his bank account. If he still remains a Panther this season, I will boo him everytime he walks onto the field. That is a promise! Not to change the subject, but did any of you guys pay attention to the the pro workout that John Fox attended this week? It was in Georgia and it was in regards to a possible JP replacement. Do some research and I am sure it will spark your interest.

If you are referring to the Georgia Tech Pro Day
I covered that back on March 10th here.
BH do you really have to be so abrasive? It’s obvious r3 was kidding with Usana, they both have been posting here for a while.

Think of how much of a power house the panthers could be with Holt. With Smith already making miraculous catches being double covered most of the time, imagine if holt was cross field with just one cb to blow by. Im thinking superbowl, especially with williams and stewart in th eback field. in my opinion the panthers should look for some way to find the money to get Holt.

Ides of March
Seeing as it the 15th (for those in America), I thought I’d give a shout out to everyone’s favorite Panther, Julius!
Have a great day, Julius! (Et tu, the bomb dot com!)

Good lord, fants really want Holt
it makes some sense, but we’re a run first team with no cash, and huge holes on D.
I’d like having him too, but I’m not going to become depressed if the team doesn’t go after him
