This move has been rumored for several weeks but has now happened:
Unable to move him after he turned down a trade to Detroit, the Panthers found no other takers for Ken Lucas and released him Wednesday.
The move creates another $2.3 million in immediate salary cap room, which is good since they had $24,042 at the beginning of the day.
This move is more the result of the dire salary cap situation than anything else in my opinion. I was not as down on Lucas as a lot of other fans as I'm not sure we have anyone better waiting to take his place. I'm hoping Richard Marshall is ready to step up and claim the starting CB slot.
Lucas had some very good seasons for the Panthers and I wish him luck going forward.
Update: Yahoo! Sports has a post via the AP that confirms the Panthers expect Richard Marshall to be promoted.
“Everything works out through competition, but obviously Richard is a former second-round pick and has been a very, very good player for us,” Hurney said. “We certainly have all the confidence in the world that he can step up and help us there.”
So that question is answered for the moment.
