Panther Paw Prints from Around the Web
- Pro Football Weekly reports the Panthers are still hoping to get a draft pick for CB Ken Lucas as they continue to shop him.
- I'm sure you've heard by now that former Panther RB Fred Lanes killer (his wife) got released after serving six years in prison. Yes, 6 years, that's all. Note to self: Always make sure you are worth more to your wife alive vs. dead! RIP Fred.
- Scout.com postulates: Peppers to Green Bay? How ironic would that be if Pep was reunited with former Panther DC Mike Trgovac, the guy we assume he was trying to get away from? It's pure speculation based on some anonymous source where the only ‘meat' to the story is that the Packers play a 3-4 and have the cap space to sign Peppers. Enough said.
- Silver Fox at the Bleacher Report points out the semi-obvious: that the Panthers will sit pat during free agency.
- Darin Gantt points out that it is not unusual for playoff teams to remain quite during free agency. Maybe so, but it is soooo boring.
Other NFL News of Interest:
- The Falcons signed LB Mike Peterson (33) because they had to dump to old man Keith Brooking (Also 33).
- How long do you think it will take before the Buffalo fan base turns on TO?
- Here's a very lengthy statistical analysis that tries to determine the greatest defense in NFL history. It's a good read for you stats nuts (r3?)
- Charles Robinson with Yahoo! Sports compiles a nice list of the remaining free agent bargains and ‘buyer beware'.

This part of the year
is so boring. There is not even a first round draft pick to look forward to seeing in mock drafts. Not to mention the fact that many Panthers have reached incentives up against the salary cap, so they are incredibly quiet this year.
I am a little nervous simply because I feel like every time the Panthers think they have a good team and decide to stand pat the next year seems to be injury prone and disappointing. At least that feels like the case in 2007 and 2005. I definitely don’t want the Panthers to make moves for the sake of making moves though…

Yeah, I'm feeling the same way
We have the Falcons on heels and a very tough schedule. It’s going to be a tough season for the NFC South I think.

Tough because...
we play the AFC East and the NFC East and only one team (Buffalo 7-9) with a losing record last season. That’s damn tough.

This coming season
If Peppers stays, then this coming season’s team will be pretty much the same. So far, since Fox has been the HC, 2nd round and later picks haven’t really contributed much their first season, let alone start. Ryan Kalil logged some playing time, but he didn’t start with Hartwig still on the team. Ryan was also the top center in the draft. Some draft reports had him going in the 1st round.
So even with the draft, I’m not expecting the Panther’s team to change much from last season, at least player wise. New coaches may change the defense to a certain degree. Hopefully some of their draft picks from previous years will get more playing time and make more of an impact this coming season.
I think the Panthers should keep Ken Lucas. Getting rid of him would only save them 2.37 million. They couldn’t pick up another CB in FA with Lucas’ ability for 2.37 million and drafting for a CB would use up a precious draft pick that’s needed for other positions of need. If they could afford to keep him, they manage to have enough to sign their draft picks without releasing him, then I think they should.

Lucas
That’s a great view about Lucas’s cap hit. Have to say I hadn’t thought about it that way.
Although if we could trade him I would still be in favor of that.

Lack of 1st round pick
is why I’m not really excited about the draft.
