Panthers Pro Day Update
- Panthers HC John Fox attended Georgia Tech's Pro Day and we can only assume that means they are looking at DE Michael Johnson and DT's Vance Walker and Daryl Richards. Johnson was impressive but both Walker and Richard were limited by injuries.
Georgia Tech DE Michael Johnson was one of the hottest names at the pro day. Johnson, who has been projected as high as a middle to late first-round pick in mock drafts, looked very good working out as a down lineman and a linebacker. He showed he could drop into coverage and play in space.
Johnson measured in at 6-foot-6 7/8 and 266 pounds, and he had 40-yard dash times of 4.61 and 4.64 seconds. He did 23 repetitions on the bench press at 225 pounds, and he turned in a time of 7.42 seconds in the three-cone drill. He did not participate in the vertical jump or the 20- or 60-yard shuttle.
- Panthers DC Ron Meeks attended the Utah Pro Day:
Many eyes were on CB Sean Smith and DE Paul Kruger, though Brice McCain might have stolen the show with his 40-yard dash times, which were faster than any cornerback's time at the NFL combine.
- Panthers GM Marty Hurney attended TCU's Pro Day:
The 40 scouts from all 32 teams came to see a pair of combine invites, linebacker Jason Phillips and strong safety Stephen Hodge. They left talking about Schlueter.
Schlueter (6-2 3/8, 290 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.7 seconds, had a 35-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-3-inch long jump, a 4.28-second short shuttle, and a 7.42-second three-cone drill.
- Unfortunately this Pro Day blog doesn't list which teams attended each Pro Day but I'm pretty sure they attended the Missouri Pro Day:
Defensive tackle Evander ‘Ziggy' Hood kept his 40 time from the combine, but did do the other drills. He ran the short shuttle in 4.45 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.32 seconds. He had 35 reps in the bench press, jumped 34 1/2 inches in the vertical and leaped 9-feet, 8-inches in the broad jump.
I'm keep you posted as more details emerge.

Geez, whats it take to get a comment these days?
It’s that time of the off-season when most but the absolute diehards check out for a month or so until the draft.

How about some action?
And losing back-up OLmen and potentially your long-snapper don’t count.
And everyone is sick of the Peppers story… he needs to sign his tender or find a team that’ll sign him to a contract.
As for the draft… again, I don’t think Hood will be there. Or Sean Smith. Paul Kruger would be awesome though. As would McCain late (or as a UDFA). And the OC from TCU.
Michael Johnson… still torn on him. If he lasts, it’ll be because of questions of motivation. If he doesn’t, it’s because of his upside. Do you discount one because of the other?

I figured the ESPN story would get a few comments. Boy was I wrong.

my thoughts
I’ve been thinking about this one for awhile. If you’re not doing anything to get a 1st rd pick, then why get excited about a guy who’s going to go in the mid 1st rd?

Word is Johnson is slipping to the 2nd round and might be there at #59
but that could just be teams posturing to get him.
