Postulating Where Peppers Will Land: Eagles
I was just about to crash for the night when I saw Darin Gantt had put up something new and it included the latest rumor on where Panthers DE Julius Peppers might land. After putting up my Peppers to Miami post I'm 90% convinced Pep will end up with a 4-3 team since I don't see a 3-4 team taking the risk Pep can make the transition. So when I read Gantt's train of thought on the Eagles I thought it made some sense:
Since Philadelphia's on his list (whether anyone will say it out loud or not), you start connecting dots. The Eagles are trying to move disgruntled CB Lito Sheppard. Would Sheppard and getting your own first-rounder back from last year's draft-day trade do the trick? It's the 28th overall pick. If it was Philadelphia's 21st, would that change your mind? If next year's game was there instead of here, would it matter? And does QB Jake Delhomme get a vote? He'd be all for not having to throw in Sheppard's direction.
If the Eagles offered the Panthers the #28 pick AND Lito Sheppard I would be all over that. We could then cut CB Ken Lucas and slide Sheppard right into his spot. We could then use our #1 on a DT or on a DE to replace Peppers. I can't find anything wrong with that move.
What say ye?

Who would we draft?
Who would be available at 21 . . . or even 28. I voted for the 21st pick + Sheppard for Peppers. IF that goes down, we would need a starter at DE and a #3 DT for the rotation.
There are 2 DE’s I like in the draft that I think could fit and impact the D next year: Orakpo and Barwin. The other 1st/2nd round worthy guys at DE are either undersized, not impressive or athlete’s not football players (ie – Ga Tech’s Michael Johnson). Orakpo would be gone by either 21 or 28. Barwin maybe a good selection at that point. I would prefer a DE in the 1st round because we would need a starter there and the DT would be #3. Also our pass rush needs a big boost.
The DT could be the best/only 1st round choice based on player grade. Raji would be gone by then. That would leave Jerry. I would be very happy to have him in the rotation. The problem comes if we make the previously mentioned trade near the time of the draft. We would have no room under the cap to make a free agent pick up at DE that could be worthy of a starting position. The DT rotation would be quality, but the DE’s would be among the worst in the league (at least in pass rush).
Thoughts?

Barwin looked good at the combine and he might be there in the 2nd round
Orakpo looks more like a 3-4 OLB, he’s a little light for a 4-3 DE. I’m not enamored with the thought of Johnson & Brayton being our starting DE’s. Hopefully they will bring in another FA AND draft a DE

Good points
I think if we make this deal, our starters will at DE will be Johnson and Brayton. We would need more intensity and blitzes to get any real pass rush going if that were the case. As for Lito Sheppard, well, I don’t think it matters if we have him sitting in a soft zone waiting to react the way Ken Lucas did. We need better game planning and more creativity during the games to see a real difference, not just more personnel.
I'd pass...
obviously Lito is being overrated… the Eagles wanted a 1st/2nd for him last year, and then when the couldn’t get it, he was moved to 3rd/4th string, and more or less disappeared. And they want the same compensation for him now… which I wouldn’t pay. He’s a back-up for a reason… Plus, I think he’s looking for a huge extension, which I’m not interested in giving him.
As for pick #21/28… Raji is obivously gone. Jerry will probably be gone too, though this will be impacted by whom Haynesworth signs with (if he goes to Tampa, as rumors indicate he could, then Jerry could fall to 21, but I don’t see him falling to 28 in any scenario). You could reach for Ziggy Hood (depending on the mock you look at, he could be a late 1st round guy, at best).
At DE… Tyson Jackson is the only 1st round DE, according to drafttek, and I’d pass on him. I’d rather hope someone like Robert Ayers or Connor Barwin (he’s probably shooting up boards right now) or Paul Kruger falls to our pick in the 2nd round.
I agree with Will on the DEs… I’m not sure if I’d take one in the 1st only because there aren’t many options (Orakpo is more of a 3-4 LB). I like the 2nd round guys more. That said, if Lewis is going to miss time, we’ll need a #2 DT, not a #3. I’d be positioning myself to trade Peppers for a pick that will land us either Raji or Jerry (a top 15 or 17 or so?). And if we get a late 1st rounder (like #28), I’d avoid taking Lito with it, and would draft Sean Smith instead.
The FSU BE Everette Brown is rated 1st round I think
but he’s going top 10 in many mocks so he would be out of reach in this scenario. I agree the 2nd round guys looked good at the combine, I think there would be better value there.
So Sheppard is that bad? He always killed the Panthers, seems I remember he had an INT that sealed a win…another bad Jake moment (I’m trying my best to suppress those memories).

Brown at DE?
Brown (http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/everette-brown?id=71227) is smaller, weaker and slower than Orakpo (http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/brian-orakpo?id=71423).
I think they both can be good, maybe even great football players at the nfl level, but respectfully disagree that Orakpo cannot be a 4-3 DE.
Jason Taylor was always light (6’4" 244 on http://www.nfl.com/players/jasontaylor/profile?id=TAY338550). The same could be said of Osi Umenyiora (http://www.nfl.com/players/osiumenyiora/profile?id=UME444955). These are 2 of the best DE in the game from recent memory. That is not to say Orakpo, Brown or Barwin are going to be at that level, but that it can be done.

I think Maybin had a bad combine though
and he’s more of a developmental guy/project.
As for Orakpo… he probably could be a 4-3 DE if asked, but is a better fit at 3-4 LB. I don’t know what type of DEs a cover 2 needs though (if we go that route)… do they go with smaller guys or bigger ones?
Cover 2 DE's
Meeks came from Indy and they had 2 of the smallest and most productive DE’s in the league. Freeney is 6’1" 268 and Mathis is only 6’2" 245. Combined they had 22 sacks, and 9 forced fumbles. I’ll take that any year from my 2 DE’s.

I'd take it as well
It will hopefully be fun to watch

I wonder if Johnson/Brayton/McClover/Taylor
fit his system in some way.
Hard to know what exactly we need to fit his system.
McClover
is not on the team any more. He didn’t make final cuts.

But with a new DC what defense will the Panthers be running?
If its a cover 2 type system then you have to think aobut which CB would be a better fit there. But I did vote for the trade but exchange the 28th for the 21st.
Wait for the the 2009 Oaklands A's season to start I can not. Herh herh herh.
