Panthers Franchise Day (Open Thread)

As there will probably be more information coming throughout the day, I figured why post several small stories and just keep it all under one main story. We'll keep the main story updated as the days goes but feel free to post links in the comments as it happens.

10:10 am - So to start out it appears Jordan Gross is about to get his hugh contract with a large up front salary of $30.5 million of the first 3 years of a six year contract.

Inside the Panthers:

According to sources, the Panthers and Gross’s representatives are close to finalizing a frontloaded, six-year agreement with Gross that would pay him $30.5 million over the first three years of the deal – the biggest three-year payout ever to an offensive lineman.

Update by Jaxon:

Here's the current list of franchised players by Windy City Gridiron:

FS Oshiomogho Atogwe (St. Louis Rams)
LB - Karlos Dansby (Arizona Cardinals)
LB - Terrell Suggs (Baltimore Ravens)
QB - Matt Cassel (New England Patriots)
RB - Brandon Jacobs (New York Giants)
P - Michael Koenen (Atlanta Falcons)
K - Shayne Graham (Cincinnati Bengals)
WR - Antonio Bryant (Tampa Bay Bucs)
RB - Darren Sproles (San Diego Chargers)

Update 1:45 pm

Gross confirmed the his new contract is done

"We're done, I want to confirm that," said Gross. "I'm ecstatic to be part of the Panthers."

it looks like Peppers has also been tagged.

The Panthers have placed the franchise tag on Julius Peppers, according to agent Carl Carey.

I'm sure there are other places that have confirmed it but they are the ones that I've had up this morning.

Update 3:35 pm

The Observer provides more information about the franchise tag on Peppers.

[Marty] Hurney said the Panthers placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Peppers, which gives him the right to seek contract offers from another team.As a result, Peppers can bring the Panthers an offer sheet and the Panthers would have the right to either match the offer and keep Peppers under a multi-year deal, or receive two first-round picks as compensation from the other team.

I never thought about that scenario but we could match any offer by another team. Of course Peppers wouldn't have to sign it, and it would definately be a distraction for th team, but still interesting.

Hurney had this to say about the franchise rules:

"The franchise tag is the franchise tag," he said. "With it, go those rules."

I can see why they didn't get this done last year

The front load prevents the chance of getting cut later due to the increasing salary

good deal

Sometimes people try to figure out the value of a player based on little numbers here and there, but when a guy plays at his level, and will continue to do so for several more years, there is actually very little risk. I like the deal if it goes through.

Now we franchise Peppers and wait for him to turn into the kind of diva that will make T.O. jealous over the amount of whining he’s going to do. Either way, Pep gets traded by the end of next week, and I’m glad about it.

Peppers is going to need to come up some other choices

There is no way Peppers is going to traded to any team in the NFC South. As for Dallas, they do not even have a 1st round pick due to the Williams trade with Detroit. And if he thinks that the Patriots are interested, they can’t even afford to pay Wilfork with all the money they have tied up in quarterbacks and Moss. I heard that Kansas City called earlier in the week, inquiring about Pepp. I wouldn’t mind having their 1st round pick + Glen Dorsey for Peppers. I know you guys might think that idea is a little far-fetched, but they are switching to a 3-4 and the man is not big enough to play nose tackle and not quick enough for the outside end position. That kind of leaves KC ia a predicament. What you guys think?

Don't let the door hityou on the way out

I hope he ends up on the SI cover, the Madden cover and every other “curse” that is out there.

He has been my favorite Panther since he come on board, but this situation has been handled wrong from the start.

Handled wrong

I hope you mean by him and not the team.

I totally agree if that’s what you meant…

Handled wrong

yes, by Peppers and his agent.

Although I think Panthers should have gotten something done last year.

O-line

Due to the horrendous luck on injuries, the O-line has had continuity issues, resulting in a lot of false starts at the beginning of the year.

Other news...

Titans franchise Bo Scaife (TE).
Seahawks franchise Leroy Hill (LB).

Texans franchise Dunta Robinson (CB).

Derek Anderson

While I know you said rumor, I was wondering do you have a link?

Possibly at Bucem.com

Just visited their site and see it here.

What teams might be interested in Peppers?

It still seems like Philly would be an ideal team to go after Peppers. No way Dallas has the pieces to make a move for Pep. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dan Snyder and the Redskins end up making a run at Pep though.

We could get our 1st rounder back from Philly

BHWells has a point

I really don’t know how well Dorsey did last year, but I’d take him and a 1st rounder. I also don’t know how big his contract is. When you watch highlights of Peppers, he is absolutely one of the most talented players I have ever seen. Then I remind myself that those plays on the highlight reel happen once every four games.

But if we get some draft picks and no players for Peppers, I could see us going after Derrick Burgess and/or Haynesworth. Today has been a good day.

Peppers

Woooooooooo. I love Peppers to death but I needed him to be locked down. I really wish that someone takes him so we don’t have to pay so much money for him but also we could have another Jordan Gross scenario here.

Thank you

I check this occassionally. I was in the chat during the playoff game during Ari. I am a huge Peppers fan (jersey and bobblehead) so I am really opinionated in letting him walk all over us. But thank you for welcoming me.

Pep's skills

I have to be honest, I think if Pep really loved it in Carolina and wanted to stay, he still wouldn’t be worth the money. That’s a lot of money. He’s really about 5 sacks a season and a TD away from that kind of money.

by usana_gaines on Feb 19, 2009 2:50 PM EST reply actions

I read

over at Charlotte.com that if pep gets his $17 mil for a 1 year franchise that that $ is not guaranteed, so if he tears his knee up during training camp he can get a minimum salary for attending camp, anyone know about this?

by ClaytonFire on Feb 19, 2009 5:15 PM EST reply actions

Wow, if we could get two 1st rounders

that would be great. What I’m wondering though is if we can accept less than that. The Vikings ponied up a 1st and 3rd.

by Jaxon on Feb 19, 2009 10:03 PM EST reply actions

We can accept less.

If someone signs him and we let him leave, it’s 2 first-rounders.
If we trade him though (even if he signs an offer sheet), we can trade him for whatever the 2 teams agree to.

by UtesFan89 on Feb 19, 2009 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

Actually the Vikings ponied up not one, but two third rounders.

Personally though, I’d be more than happy with a pick in the upper-middle position of the first round. Anything more than that is extra, but I would love the chance to grab one of those DE’s out of college.

Carolina should call up Buffalo's GM

And see if they would be up for trading both Schobel and their 1st round pick for Peppers. Would that be fair? I think so.

by ChipperTeixeira89 on Feb 20, 2009 1:05 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, I'd take that. Schobel is good

He could slide right in Pep’s spot and then we add another 1st round talent. In that scenario I bet the Panthers end up smelling like roses.

I have this feeling

that Panther Nation will be pleased with the outcome of this. With our recent early round draft success, I think getting under and upgrading the defense will be the best thing for us right now.
