Please just say no to Michael Vick

There has been a lot of discussion by the media about the possible landing places for Michael Vick now that he is back in the league and really has no use in Philadelphia. One of the things that bothers me the most about the discussions is the fact that people mediots keep saying that Vick would be a good fit for the Panthers given the recent struggles of Jake Delhomme.

After the jump you will see some of my thoughts on the matter that I wrote at my personal blog, and I felt that I would share them here with you to gather your thoughts on the situation.

Star-divide

Bill Simmons said it best*. There really are three types of athletes.

1. Those who bring something to the table.
2. Those who bring nothing to the table.
3. Those who take things off the table.

Following this theory, the object of any professional franchise should be simple: avoid drafting/signing guys who take things off the table. They're no good for the morale of the team**, and team morale is almost as important as talent***.

I'm sure you're wondering by now why I'm bringing this up. Well, I was watching the NFL Network today, and the talking heads decided to bring up the "where will Michael Vick play next season" discussion (as if anyone really cares right now), and of course the Panthers were mentioned as one of the potential teams that may take a chance and acquire Vick.

The fact that Delhomme has struggled this season was used as the analysts' reasoning behind the Panthers possibly being in a Vick courtship, but what the talking heads forgot to mention was that Delhomme is signed for $13M more guaranteed from his contract extension, and it would be pointless to bring in a quarterback like Vick to replace Delhomme. If the Panthers are going to replace Delhomme (and they should), it would make more sense to replace him with someone younger instead of someone who has seen little game action for the past 2 years. (A counterargument could be that Moore falls in the same category, but he has at least been through camp, practiced, and been on the sideline, unlike Vick.)

Also, there are the off-field ramifications of bringing in Michael Vick. Let's face it: there are a lot of people who don't like the guy. He is still in the process of rebuilding his public image, and there are a lot of people who are reluctant to support him, regardless of how many times he says he is sorry or how sincere he seems to be with his apologies.

Remember, I said that Simmons was right when he claimed there are three types of athletes, and I believe that Vick is one of those athletes that takes things off the table. The constant media attention to Vick would be a distraction for the rest of the team, and a distracted team doesn't perform up to standard most of the time.

But, it's not just about his off-the-field actions that makes him a "takes things of the table" guy. In reality, he's just not that great of a quarterback. Sure, he can move in and out of the pocket and can get a lot of rushing yards over the course of a season, but when it comes down to the position of on-field leader and passer he fails miserably. He doesn't have a good arm, and he doesn't have a clutch mentality. I wouldn't want him under center with my team down by 6 points with 1:00 remaining in the 4th quarter of the NFC Championship Game on a drive that must go 80+ yards for a game-winning score.

At this stage in his career (if you can even say he has a career anymore), he's nothing more than a gimmick quarterback that can be used in "Wildcat Formation" situations for teams that want to give the illusion that "hey, we might pass out of this formation, so you better be on your toes" -- but that's all he has left in him. He's not the same player that he was when he came out of Virginia Tech and led the Falcons back to respectability. He's no longer the same threat he used to be. (And, he has never been a passing threat, he's always been a run-first type of quarterback.)

I really hope that the Panthers' front office isn't even considering the possibility of signing Vick, and if they are, I hope they will take some time and think about the negative impact such a move could make on the franchise. I believe that if they were to look at both sides of the argument, they would see that the bad most definitely outweigh the good, and that Michael Vick has no place in Carolina.

We already have enough guys who bring nothing to the table, we don't need anyone taking anything off of it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* - Bill Simmons' "Table Theory" is found in this column.

** - A perfect example of a guy who takes things off the table is Terrell Owens. Sure, he's a great receiver (or at least he used to be), but his attitude problems cause so many distractions that the problems associated with him negate the positive impact he makes on the field. (Constantly attacking his coaches and quarterbacks on the field and to the media when he's not featured enough in the offensive gameplan is his most frequent way of causing problems.)

*** - I truly believe this is why teams like the Cowboys can't win the Super Bowl. They have too many egos in the locker room to form the proper bond necessary to have any positive morale, causing an "every man for himself" attitude that kills them when they face teams that are sold out for one another and for the benefit of the group.

Discussion on this topic is welcomed...

You don’t have to agree with me, I just thought this would make for good mid-week fodder for us to chew on while we wait for the boys to take on the Patriots on Sunday.

Nice read BW...

I like the 3 types of athletes mantra…it makes sense.

Not only do I not think Vick is truly a fit in Carolina I also don’t think the Big Cat would even consider it. He places too much valeu on image (and I’m glad). Vick will play somewhere next year (my guess is he stays in Philly) but it will not be Charlotte.

I slightly agree, slightly disagree..

As far as Vick to the Panthers, no way. We just don’t need him. We have all the ground power we could possibly harness in a single game right now. There’s no need to bring Vick in when Williams, Stewart, and even Sutton are leading our charge on the ground. I also believe that Goodson is going to develop into the multi-threat, screen murdering back we are expecting him to be. That’s the part I agree with..

The part I don’t really agree with is saying Vick takes from the table. Unless you’re just saying he brings nothing to our table, in which, I suppose we’re on the same road, just different lanes. He’s still a great athlete, nothing can take that from him – he’s simply not that great of a traditional QB anymore, if he ever was.

For a team such as the Dolphins, that can dedicate themselves to a full blown wild cat, he would do wonders. As he gets back into the swing of thing and his passing returns to at least mediocrity he’ll be hell in the wild cat. That’s the only thing I can see him doing, though. He’s not going to go anywhere and be a starting QB, only a gimmick, but that’s not to say he’s useless. I would honestly hate playing the Dolphins knowing Vick was in their backfield. He’s a bad gimmick in Philly and a dual threat in Miami just because they’re set up for that type of play. If Vick goes anywhere other than Miami (or another team willing to completely conform to the WC) it’ll be nothing more than a waste.

If Carolina were chocolate ice cream, Vick would be chocolate syrup. You could mix them but you’re not going to gain much. However, Miami would be vanilla ice cream – mixing the two would be great. Other teams would be strawberry, I suppose, you could mix them but can’t guarantee how it’s going to taste until it’s too late and you’ve already made a huge bowl.

I voted for the third option, by the way.

If we do want more chocolate syrup,

we should get some that hasn’t already expired.

I see your point...

about Doggy Style being a fit for Miami — I don’t think that they would grab him though because of the off-field stuff, and I feel that his inability to stand in the pocket and throw the ball takes things off the table, because he can’t use his legs forever (for running the wildcat), and eventually he will become completely useless to everyone.

I say he maybe has 5 years left if he can latch on with a team that will run the wildcat consistently enough to make it worth the time and money to sign him.

If he does catch on to a team that wants to run the wildcat featuring him, I am renaming it the Doggy Style formation and will trademark that term. LOL

LOL!

I was just considering that Miami was using Ronnie Brown to run the wildcat, I imagine Vick can’t be throwing any worse than he would’ve done. lol

+1 .... 100% Agreement on all points

Living here in the Philly area I’ve witnessed first hand, that at this point in his career, Vick brings little if anything to the table. So far he has really struggled to get back up to NFL speed and still looks really indecisive. With the exception of last week’s game I would go so far as to say he has been a detriment to team offensively. I also agree that even when he was at his best he was not an accurate passer and certainly left somthing to be desired as a team leader.
Also the baggage that he brings should not be underestimated. His presence has fractured the Eagles fan base in ways that I never would have imagined.
Mike Vick is not the answer to the Panthers QB dilemma.

My thoughts on Michael Vick:

I made it abundantly clear during the preseason how I would detest the Carolina Panthers front office for signing Michael Vick. The off the field stuff disgusted me enough, but that wasn’t really the reason why I said it was a horrible idea. I’m look at Michael Vick the football player.

Vick was, and is one of the most electrifying players in the NFL. He was an amazing, once in a decade athlete who needed to be accounted for on every single play. His success came at a time where the NFL was relatively free of gimmicks and gadget. There weren’t wildcats, wildhorses, dirty birds or any other manor of offensive buzzword you see in the 2009 iteration of the NFL. This led Vick to have great success against teams who didn’t see him on a regular basis. The Panthers drafted Thomas Davis ostensibly as an ‘anti-Vick’ and towards the end of his run in ATL the Panthers had him figured out.

Throughout this time Vick is an extremely below average quarterback in the NFL. Even in his best seasons he was in the bottom of the league in completion percentage. His best season was in 2004 in this regard, and even then he completed just 56.3% of his passes. To give some perspective to just how low this number is Jake Delhomme has completed 55.5% of his passes this year.

It was the Atlanta wide receivers who were always blamed for Vick’s low numbers. Fans of Vick would virulently argue that if Vick had a half decent reciever he’d put up Peyton Manning numbers, though this never materialized. The Falcons brought in Roddy White and Michael Jenkins to give Vick targets. The result?

- During Vick’s reign at QB Roddy White never had a season with over 600 yards recieving. Since Vick leaving the Falcons White is on pace for his 3rd straight 1,000 yard recieving season.

Vick is not the QB we need for the Carolina Panthers. He’s not a good decision maker, he’s not accurate and can’t use offensive weapons effectively. Sure, he’ll sell jerseys and make Sportscenter, but that doesn’t convert itself to wins or offensive success. We need a passer in Carolina, we need a leader in Carolina- we don’t need an athlete or an individual at the position.

This is, in a nutshell, my point exactly.

The off-field stuff is just icing on the cake for me. I want a field general, not a gimmick.

I don’t see Vick coming to play for you guys. Mostly because he will want to come on a team and start along with getting paid starters money. You guys just gave Delhomme a nice new contract so just with that alone I don’t see it happening. I don’t even think you guys would be considered on my list of teams he would/could possible go to.

Even though a lot of people can’t stand him – he will be able to benefit any team that he goes to because he is such an athlete, but I don’t think you guys have to worry about it.

I don't see it either.

I often question the knowledge of the talking heads when they say stuff like this. I wonder if they really think they know what they’re talking about, or if they’re just making stuff up because they don’t have anything else to say about Brett Favre’s comeback or the Colts/Saints going unbeaten.

This article was on SI

http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/huddle_up/posts/79481-against-the-grain-10-teams-that-could-trade-for-vick?eref=fromSI#

They had Vikings, Browns, Jaguars, Raiders, Buffalo, Miami, Carolina, St. Louis, Washington, and the Titans.

I think Jason Campbells underrated and WASH keeps him, Carolinas spending too much for Delhomme so their out, Youngs due a lot of money but he has won the Titans games this year so he sticks, Pennington is hopefully back and healthy next year so Miamis out. This is all depending on who picks up a QB in the draft too.. But my top picks for Vick would be:

Oakland (depending on how Gradkowski does), Browns, Buffalo, and maybe St. Louis – if any. We might just have to exercise his option and wait until someone really needs him mid season depending on injuries etc.

I wasn't familiar with the SI article...

thanks for bringing that out. I saw a segment on NFL Network where they were talking about it, I don’t know if they were talking about the same article (they didn’t mention it specifically) but they focused on the Panthers because of Delhomme’s struggles this year.

I could see Oakland taking him. Al Davis likes guys who don’t make any sense as to why they’re on the roster but are athletic.

I honestly thought that Vick would end up in Oakland from the start — Philly picking him up was a huge surprise to me.

Especially since Garcia left them. I dont know what they are thinking about over in Oakland, not much of what they do makes sense but Garcia would of been better than what they got now. But, like Garcia, I wouldn’t of wanted to play for them.

Ship Vick to Oakland!!

We all have short term memories when it comes to what kind of player Vick WAS when he played against us…
