Bucs vs. Panthers Game Day Open Thread
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers, Dec 6, 2009 1:00 PM EST
So here we are Panther fans...game time yet again. It spite of the 4-7 dead end record the Panthers are sporting I find myslef a little excited. Panthers perennial back-up QB Matt Moore gets his first start since 2007 against a 1-10 Bucs team that is playing better of late even if it hasn't generated any wins.
The Panthers are battling a number of injuries too...walking wounded everywhere.
Let's just get on with it...this in now an Open Thread!

It’s sad we’re to the point now that a 1-7 Buc’s team has me kind of nervous. It’s gonna be a good one though. GO PANTHERS
Huge for Moore imo
But kind of makes me nervous with what kind of gameplan Davidson has drawn up for this one.

Probably...
1- hand ball off and hope for the best
2- throw ball to Smith and hope for the best
3- punt
It’ll be interesting to see if Kenny Moore gets any targets, being the 3rd WR today and all

Inactives for this game
Buccaneers: WR Michael Clayton, CB Aqib Talib, OL James Lee, DT Michael Bennett, DT Roy Miller, WR Terrence Nunn, OL Shawn Murphy, QB Rudy Carpenter
Panthers: QB Jake Delhomme, RB DeAngelo Williams, WR Dwayne Jarrett, DE Charles Johnson, RB Tony Fiammetta, OL Duke Robinson, CB Captain Munnerlyn, DT Derek Landri
So DeAngelos out???
This will be interesting. Moore and Stewart starting. Will he be splitting time with Goodson? Haven’t heard much about him lately.

Goodson & Sutton are both active
I wonder if we see both of them getting a few touches.

Gameday greetings folks..
just got back from church; threw in an extra prayer for Moore and the Panthers…(playing the religion card this week.) Got the wings on the grill & Yuenglings on ice, ready to make the transition into gameday mode.
Have a good one folks.
GO PANTHERS!!
I've been waiting for this game
All season long. Time to see what our future holds at QB. Moore, Free Agent, or draft pick. We’ll get a taste of Moore today, folks!
looking forward to seeing what Moore has
bummed that D-Will can’t go today (losing huge player on my fantasy team) but I look forward to seeing what our future at QB holds
Ah, more sucking up to Drew Brees, even though his great statistical game on Monday night had nothing to do with his QB skills.
I still don't buy this whole 'Brees is the NFL's best QB' thing being pitched right now.

me either
i mean, he’s good … don’t get me wrong, but I don’t see him as the end-all best QB in the league — that’s still peyton manning IMO
Why not?
I’ve thought he was one of the top few since last year
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
"The best" changes every year
Over the last 2 years, Breez has outperformed Manning… Next year maybe it’s somebody else
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
I dunno
I think you give Peyton Manning the Saints offense and they’re still undefeated, you give Brees the Colts offense and I don’t think they’re as good.
As far as I’m concerned there’s Manning then a big gap to everyone else. He transcends the league.

Do you have evidence sir?
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Sure
Manning is 1st in the NFL in yards in 2009, Brees is 5th
Manning is completing over 70% of his passes in 2009, Brees is 68.4% not a big difference, but a difference.
Manning was also more accurate in 2008, and threw less INTs.
In 2007 Manning torched Brees in all areas.
The only stat that Brees consitently has over Manning is TDs, and that’s because the Saints are forced to throw in the redzone for lack of a good goalline back; whereas the Colts use Addai to punch it in.

Yeah. I mean, he’s a great QB don’t get me wrong, but if you actually watched that New England game, you saw the Patriots secondary making mistakes all over the field. Hell, at one point, one of their corners tripped up and was off balance, leaving a NO receiver wide open, and then the commentators gushed all over Brees, as if he had something to do with it. Pathetic.

Or is that verizon wireless thing they have after the introductions stupid? all it does is have a hot girl tell us who is playing today. i think it’s just sponsor asskissing if you ask me
Also, something needs to change at BOA
There is no atmosphere there. I went to the reg season game last year against Zona, this year i saw them play Atlanta, but focusing on last years game against Zona. We were down most of the game, but nobody seemed to care. The topcats kept dancing, and they serve no purpose, and everytime they held a Vic card thing on the scoreboard people thought it was christmas or some shit. didnt care about the game. also, its the only stadium in pro sports where you arent allowed to take your shirt off

its bullshit
im not going to tip my hat to a flawed system. especially when TCU and Texas played and beat 2 ranked teams each, and Cincy beat 3 ranked opponents, but the system just rewards Texas because they are Texas
Utah last year for example
went undefeated, and people just assumed Bama wasn’t pumped up for the game. Really? you have a month to prepare for a game and you aren’t going to get over the last one? Really? Yet Florida, who lost a game, unlike Utah, won the title and nobody says anything. Boise a few years ago. Didn’t get their shot, but beat OU in a BCS bowl in the best football game ever played. And a little further back, Urban Meyer’s Utes kicked the shit out of PIttsburgh, but nobody remembers that
boise st
boise st is undefeated again, but it doesn’t matter. imagine if the panthers go undefeated next year, but get voted out the championship game.

Easy. Freeman is a rookie, and is making just his third start I believe, and has over 150 yards already against a high ranked pass defense.
Moore is a third year vet making his fourth start, and has only 60 passing yards against a terrible defense lacking their best corner.

As we go into halftime, food for thought
Flacco, Freeman, Roethlisberger…
Tall QBs seem to be getting it done in the NFL. Tony Pike out of Cinncinnati is 6’6", do you think he’ll be the next solid tall QB?
Would you like to see him as a Panther?
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
by James The Aussie on Dec 6, 2009 2:28 PM EST reply actions
I think your on to something there...
These tall QB’s have a definite vision advantage and need not worry about putting extra air under a throw to get it thru the line of scrimmage.among.
Like longtime longtime Phila 76ers GM Jimmy Lyman used to say: In pro sports height is a huge advantage and is something that you just can’t teach to a player.
Profound words from a wise man. :-)
I also think they can throw further- purely empirical.
Like a catapult, more height means more of a fulcrum and greater distance. One thing it seems Flacco, Freeman and Roethisberger have is common is their ability to heave it deep without looking like it’s tough.
Compare that to Tom Brady who needs one solid step up before he can heave it

Is it just me, or:
Delhomme showed no touch on his deep passes this season.
Moore has the touch on his deep passes, but has no zip on his short throws. Jake could set his feet and deliver those bullets on the quick hitches. Thus far I’m seeing no zip on the passes to Moore’s checkdown routes.

Moore seems to be constantly moving in the pocket, I’d assume it affects his shorter passes

We can disagree without telling people to 'shut up'
For some perspective:
Moore has 1 INT in 20 attempts.
If he was given Jake’s number of attempts extrapolated from this game alone he would have 17 INTs on the season.
Jake had18

Man, I would have loved to see a bubble screen to Smith on on of those 3 plays in the redzone
Surely, Smith has the ability to beat his man one on one if we could get him the ball in position to try and make a play.
yeah, I havent seen a bubble screen to Smith in a few games

But it isnt like they gave him a ton of attempts, but that is the way it should be. I think he looked good. The main things is that he limited his mistakes to just 1 INT.
Jake would only have 6 INTS if he had a season of games where he attempted as many passes as Moore did today.

he throws picks b/c he compiles mistakes. he makes one mistake, we fall behind and we have to pass to stay in it, and he sucks. its not a hard thing to figure out
Like I said earlier. You extrapolate Moore’s numbers for today and he has 17 picks on the year.

exactly
it’s what Fox thinks that really counts … we can sit here and debate over who we want and why, but in the end it comes down to “who gives us the best chance to win”
Fox may be wrong about his belief in Jake, but we have to go with it because he makes the decisions
Well, how fast can you recover from a broken finger?
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
My thoughts & my opinion
Defense played lights in red zone
Moore played serviceable for what he was asked to do- only around 20 passes with few mistakes- let us not forget it was his first time starting a full game since 2007 & he has had limited time with the first team.
Special teams still an issue
We will have a rough time over the next few games regardless of who starts at QB!
Dont forget Jake threw THREE picks against this 25th ranked D
Moore ability to throw the deep ball will keep defenses honest…while other teams forces Jake to throw the ball and make mistakes by stacking 8 man in the box
My question...
why the hell can’t we gameplan to only have Delhomme throw 20 passes?
Why is he out there launching 30+ on the run-first team (with D-Will, no less?)… and then Moore throwing only 20 even with D-Will out?

If Rosario had caught the pass that was tipped and then intercepted...
(which he should have done) then Moore’s line is 15/20, 169 yds, and 0 INT’s = good day.
Moore undrafted 2007, Freeman 17th pick in 2009.
Moore 2 1/2 years in the system and Freeman 1st year.

What an amazing day. Tampa is a severely underrated team, in my opinion, being they often play their opponents tough but come up short in the end (hence the record). 1-10 is absolutely no indication of the talent they possess.
With that said – Carolina played awesome. Moore played exceptionally well for his first start in two seasons (The interception was definitely out of his control) and exactly how we needed him to. Tyrell Sutton was highly impressive for what is, essentially, a 4th, now 3rd, string back averaging 6+ yds per carry on 6 carries. I would have liked to see more of him but if Stewart can carry the load, how do you not keep handing off to him?
Our defense was superb in every way I could have asked for. It’s easy to dismiss their performance due to Tampa’s offense, but it’s worth noting that only the Giants have held them to less points (that being a shut out in week 3).
Was I the only one ecstatic to see Smith bring down that 66 yard bomb from Moore? That’s exactly what the Panthers have been lacking this year. That should be his longest reception of the season now.
Double Trouble; we've got the best running backs in the NFL that never see the ball!
And I hope we're 8-7

Guy’s Please, Give the young man time to get the cob-webs out and get a feel for the game. It’s been two years. Moore did fine enough to finish out the year.
