Delhomme contract has Panthers on the hook
"The above is a detailed way of saying the Panthers are on the hook for almost $13M guaranteed to Delhomme, a player who will be 35 in January and whose contract they could have let expire at the end of this season with no future obligation."
"The Delhomme contract proves the mantra that all NFL front offices realize at different times: Some of the best deals made are the ones that are not made."

I'm sorry but if Jake is not the best QB in camp next year then he won't play
I can’t believe the Panthers would play a guy JUST because they are paying him a lot. Oh wait…my HC is John Fox…nevermind

...and he's done that with whom, exactly?
Jarret’s being paid more than Muhammad. Feeley’s being paid more than Moore. CJ Wilson and Dante Wesley are both being paid more than Munnerlyn. Duke Robinson and Geoff Schwartz are both being paid more than Bernardeau. Sutton’s being paid more than Goodson. Oh, and Landon Johnson was being paid significantly more than Diggs, and Anderson’s cap number is higher too. But yeah, get that rip in, man. Screw that Fox guy. What a schmuck.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Interesting!
So that must be why Jarret is starting over Kenny Moore. I’m really surprised Feeley isn’t playing over Moore, in that case. I mean, who cares if he knows the play book or not? Also, are not Wilson, Wesley, and Munnerlyn all contributing in one way or another? Sutton is starting over Goodson.
You make a good point, though, Diggs should have definitely taken a seat ;)

Jaxon didn't seem to be using humor.
He seemed to imply that the only consideration given to PT is salary, and that’s patently wrong.

Yeah
I just stumbled upon this thread and now I’m wondering if Jaxon was actually being serious. He seems to be. I’d like to see some big-time examples of starters who are playing over clearly better bench players due to contract. Fox has no reason to think long-term (contract done in a year, and alot of pressure to win now) and he’s made a big push towards the short-term (trading future 1st round picks away) so I’d be curious to here why Jaxon feels that way.

Hindsight is 20/20
If Jake had a great season in 2009 then a bidding war would ensue in the capless season.
The Panthers were banking on his 2008 play continuing, they picked the wrong horse.
It gets a little tiresome when people just berate the move to resign Jake without thinking of what could have happened if he played well and wasn’t under contract going into the offseason.

My thinking was they let him play out the 2009 contract...
and then renegotiate. The issue was needing cap space of course. I just don’t see a bidding war over Jake even when he was playing better. This move may be the one that ends the John and Marty era.
I tried being reasonable, I didn't like it.

And you can blame that on McNabb.
Also, Kerry Collins was far inferior to Delhomme last year as a QB, in terms of production and everything else. He got $15 million over two years with very little interest on the FA market. It’s no stretch that Delhomme could have been looking at $8-10 million for a team looking for a QB who could get them to the playoffs.

Yeah, I don't blame the move
We needed space, and I honestly didn’t think Delhomme would collapse like he has this season.

The majority...
were concerned with the amount of guranteed money and the years of the contract after such a disaster in the playoffs. The contract was structured to benefit Jake, which is why he will be on the team next year unless new coaches are in place or the team pays him a lump sum to get rid of him.

What was the thinking behind
Give Jake a FIVE year extension. What kind of money are we going to be working with for the offseason for 2010

You spread out the cap hits.
Just like the majority of NFL contracts, Delhomme won’t (and never was going to) see the end of the deal.
