Former Panther Kevin Greene Still in Running for HoF

Sponsored Post

You may recall a few weeks back I posted that JC Penny/Van Huesen is running a Fan Choice HoF Vote that mimics the actual NFL HoF vote to get a comparison of who the fans think should get in versus who the board gets in. Both the NFL HoF and the Fans Choice have released their Top 25 for consideration. Former Panther LB Kevin Greene is in the top 25 on both lists (#24), one of only 14 people included on both lists.

So now it is time to vote for round 2. Come on Panther fans, vote for LB Kevin Greene at www.fanschoice.com  . He is way better than several names on the list that got more fan votes. Greene is #3 all-time in sacks with 160 over 15 seasons.

Star-divide

The Fan's Choice campaign mirrors the Hall's selection process and will name the first-ever Fan's Choice Class live on the NFL Network in Miami on February 6, 2010, just prior to the official announcement from the Board.  Fans are encouraged to visit www.fanschoice.com daily to vote for their favorites before the next Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee reduction vote to 15 modern-era finalists that will take place in January.

Here are excerpts from a press release comparing the two lists:

Fans and Board of Selectors don't see eye-to-eye as they name their respective Top 25 candidates still in the running to become a part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2010 - most surprising, Selectors show no love for quarterbacks while the fans have 4 in their Top 25.

Earlier this afternoon, the Board of Selectors announced the official list of Top 25 picks for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2010 while the Fans selected their Top 25 as part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame endorsed Van Heusen Fan's Choice campaign.  Since September, the Hall and Van Heusen have provided fans with a first-ever dedicated fan forum to voice their choice for whom they believe should be inducted into the next Class.

The first-round of votes are in and fans cite 11 candidates that did NOT make the Board of Selectors list.  Close to 225,000 votes have been cast at www.fanschoice.com and those left off the Selectors list but still in the running for the Fan's Choice Class include: quarterbacks Randall Cunningham, Jim Plunkett, Phil Simms and Joe Theismann, defensive back Steve Atwater, tight end Todd Christensen, defensive lineman Ed "Too Tall" Jones, wide receiver Sterling Sharpe,  head coach Tom Flores, game official Jim Tunney, and athletic trainer Otho Davis.

Of this list of players not in the NFL HoF Top 25 I am only surprised that Theismann is not included. The rest were obviously good players (or people) but didn't necessarily meet the standard I would agree. Sterling Sharpe would probably have made it if his career wasn't cut short by injury. Ed Jones was probably more hype and name recognition than performance. Phil Simms did win a SB but he has numerous mediocre seasons.

What do you guys think of these two lists?

One last plea...place you vote as many times as you like at www.fanschoice.com for Kevin Greene!

I view this in two different ways...

As far as the board vs the fans… The fans will always have a certain amount of bias towards certain players for teams that they did like, and teams that they did not like. So, a supposed unbiased board may be more inclined to look at many performances for what they really were, whereas a fan base would lean towards the performances of their players more so than any others. (For example, mostly all of us here believe D-Will is the best back in the league right now, meanwhile MJD and C.J. both rank above him commonly.)

In the interest of fairness, I think the board has the correct decision.

However… In a sport like the NFL – that being a fan driven sport – at what cost do we achieve what is considered fair? By cutting the voices of the fans that made it possible for these players to display said performances in the first place? No support = no profit = no NFL. With that in mind, I feel that ‘fair’ may not be what is in the best interest of something such as this. The fans have supported the NFL for so long that it should be our voices, and our voices alone, that dictate exactly who belongs in the Hall of Fame, we have earned the right to be biased.

I’m sure I probably read too much into it but, with that said, I voted :)

a fan vote always favors the players in big markets

For example, the MLB all-star vote

That is true… I still feel like there should be some sort of fan vote, though.
