Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

All I want for Christmas...

I've been strongly debating writing this post all day, but after reading every new comment on every thread today I feel that something needs to be said. In the last week the overall animosity and (for lack of a better term) catiness has reached a new level between a lot of users on almost every single post on the blog.

Everything that I'm writing now are my opinions and concerns, and mine alone. If people wish to second my opinions, feel free to do so. Conversely, if you disagree I equally welcome the feedback.

Star-divide

I don't believe in censoring anyone, or limiting their ability to comment and post freely, however, something has to change. The constant monitoring and policing of threads to hide and deal with ToS violations isn't fun, it's not entertaining and it takes time away that I personally could be generating more content for people to read, or commenting and communicating more with the community.

I don't care 'who started it' what I do care about is who is going to end it; and this is something that can be done by each and every one of you. If there is a comment that offends you, flag it. Don't respond, don't fan the flames... simply flag it and it will be dealt with accordingly. It takes far less time to click 'action' then 'flag' and write a brief description that it takes to think up a witty way to insult someone and respond.

We are the community of a Carolina Panthers' fan blog. From reading people's comments I have no doubt we are all real fans regardless of whose point of view I agree, or disagree with. That being said, I think we can all tone down the sarcasm, snarkiness, and personal attacks. I've plead for this to end and it mostly fell on deaf ears, so I'm asking again.

Just treat people how you would like to be treated. It's pretty simple. Cat Scratch Reader is centered on the Carolina Panthers- the team alone should provide us with more than enough ammunition to argue, discuss, praise and chide in perpetuity. There is no need to denegrate and water down the good coversation and analysis with arguments about vernacular, semantics, minutia or personal attacks. I understand emotions are high right now, they will be when the team is in a time of flux and even more so during a losing season. However, Jaxon built elements into this blog to allow for the venting of frustrations (see the relaxed allowance on swearing in open threads).

I don't doubt for a second after perousing other team's blogs that we have one of the best communities from top to bottom of any team. The quality of our fanposts, comments and analysis are really a cut above other team's; for this I feel very lucky. Lets keep it that way! Everyone needs to do their part to maintain this community and stop it from being watered down by in fighting. Let's channel the fire and emotion one might direct at another user into writing a detailed counterpoint about the Panthers, in the end this gives us all more perspectives to look at, and content to read.

So please, if I could have but one selfish Christmas wish let it be that we all just take a step back from the name calling, the rampant sarcasm and beratement of others and continue to make this blog everything it can be.

James...

I agree with what you have said in its entirety. Unfortunately, I believe it is equivalent to wishing for peace on earth. Respectful debate will be difficult to achieve without some type of more stringent enforcement. Merry Christmas to everyone at CSR.

I tried being reasonable, I didn't like it.

Rec'd.

It’s just not that difficult to talk about football.

Second that....

I read the Cat Scratch Reader approx. 5-6 times a week, but I don’t post as often as I would like, but I felt I had to respond to your blog. I agree with you. Panthers fans have always handled themselves with a little more class than other NFL fans, and I’m proud to be a part of that. To sum it up what you said James, we just simply need to refocus our passions into talking about our team, the Carolina Panthers, and not insulting and calling each other names.

One last thing….. in the most politically incorrect way, Merry Christmas to all of you and may God bless you this new year!

I agree with you too...

I’m relatively new here, and I must say that one of the reasons I come here to read and comment is because of the camaraderie that I have with fellow Panthers fans. It is nice to come to a fan site where we can kick back, relax, and talk about football. The moment that we lose that ability and turn this into a never-ending pissing contest is the moment that we lose what makes this place special.

I also hope that the snarkiness (I love that word) will end, and we can just get back to our common goal — following, discussing, praising, and criticizing the Panthers’ players, coaches, and front office personnel.

Merry Christmas to everyone here at CSR, and thank you all for accepting me as a small part of this community. And, as always — GO PANTHERS!

Also from a relative newcomer. The content of the blog and threads is of primary importance, and I believe the quality of that content is excellent. I think we can all live without the playground name calling.

Nothing more true has ever been said

we are one of the more respectable fan bases in the league. we dont need to be attacking eachother just because you disagree or that we are losing or because you had a bad day at work. Sorry if i have at all offended anyone in anyway. it was not my intention. THanks again James and Jaxon for all you time and work on his site. Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year

To all those that have watched this unfold

I say thank you for your patience. If you feel like you’ve participated in this to any degree consider that you always have the option to simply ignore what someone else posts. I’ve tried it and it works! The problem is that it takes a bit a maturity… [Did I say that out loud?]

As it turns out SBN is debating installing an ‘ignore’ button that allows you to screen the comments from other specified members. Does that sound like a viable solution?

Ignoring posts is all well and good...

But that doesn’t mean it should give people liberty to insult others in ways that have nothing to do with football.

I agree

but it rarely starts with straight out insults and name-calling. It usually starts with snarky comments or counterpoints not intended to add to the conversation. It them degenerates into name-calling after the back and forth starts

How do you define someone else's intent, exactly?

By the words they type MP!

What answer could I possibly give that would make you happy MP? Nothing…exactly. Your going to come back with some snarky ass comment about one particular word in this passage with no real INTENT to understand what this thread is about. Your INTENT will be to prove you are the smartest guy here and everyone else is wrong. Its getting very old…

I'll give you one thing MP

Intent is hard to understand over the Internet, I’m guilty of misinterpretation, as is everyone here. I’m sure you could use that as an excuse, but if you are really as smart as you would like us to believe, that won’t fly.

like the way you can 'hide' people on Facebook?

Sounds like an option, but then when posters change their user name they’d get around it.
Plus, everyone else would still see all the posts and continue to notice the overall ‘dragging down’ of the general tone of a given thread or discussion.
More previewing and censoring while not ideal may be needed in the short term, maybe a ‘3 strikes and you’re out’ concept….but ultimately it’s up to everyone to just be mature and reasonable with their comments.

I think an 'ignore' button would be very prudent and useful.

There are just some people who rub each other the wrong way… sometimes people can find common ground but there are equally as many times people just can’t get along.

An ‘ignore’ button would allow people to filter the content they see and prevent from getting worked up.

I’m all for options, and the more tools a user has at their disposal, the better.

I second the ignore button.

by SlayerGhaleon on Dec 24, 2009 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

I'm for it.

My buttons get pushed, and I over-react, for which I’m sorry to the group.

I try to add logical content and analysis, and provide links when needed, to back up my opinions and observations. If others would concentrate on that objective, too, rather than instigating the confrontations, we’d have a blog bordering on nirvana. There are a world of valuable posters here — better than any other blog I’ve ever read. And for that, I thank all of you, for adding to my enjoyment of being a Panthers fan.

If we had an ignore button (which coincidentally I almost inquired about the other day), you’d certainly see MY rhetoric calm down….but on the other hand, what might happen is that one (say, me) might read several posts made by people he doesn’t ignore, who are all replying to the one he Does ignore — that could get confusing.

The best alternative would be for ALL here to just take a deep breath, make a New Year’s Resolution to lighten up, and not hit the Post button until we’ve censored ourselves for anything that could be taken as insulting or demeaning to another member. I know that’s idealistic, but I could do it. Actually, I WILL do it.

Happiest of Holidays to all of you!

by bigdavis on Dec 24, 2009 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

++++

Good point. Taking a deep breath seems like a nice alternative.

I think the sarcasm is what really gets people going, I know it gets me going sometimes. Especially when it amounts to nothing more than “hey, lets see what kind of argument I can start with this guy”. It seems a lot of comments reflect that.

Though, I must say, from the small time I’ve been here, I think you and I have been on a very similar page. More often than not I agree with what you’re saying, heck, I agree with what most people have to say.. If not I accept their opinion as that and go on reading other comments instead of digging up facts to prove their wrong while I’m solely right :).

Besides, I think we’re all here to share opinions and observations, while learning through that… we can go to nfl.com if we only want boring ol’ facts haha.

Absolutely.

I do apologize if I have been in the midst of any of these “cat-fights” you make mention of. I’ve been in the midst of conversations that, at times, seem to get a bit heated.

I think the ignore option is a great idea, though there’s only one user I could think to use it for. Generally, everyone else seems capable of sharing opinions peacefully.

I’ll try my best to ignore the “sarcasm, snarkiness, and personal attacks” that lead to nothing but a ton of comments that no one else wants to sift through to actually read about their favorite team..

We all love the Panthers

I apologize if I have contributed to the “snarkiness” in any way, I’m an idiot teenager, my blood runs hot sometimes. ; ) But apart from just a few users, most of us can make our point and discuss without sarcasm or snarkiness directed at other users we are discussing with. That’s what makes this blog so special, that you can make an opinion without being cut down by the self-proclaimed “experts”.

I agree

We all get frustrated. We are all here based on our fandom for this team. We have a very good core knowledge, and courage to express.

Respect is the key.

I appreciate the ability to update my knowledge of this wonderful team, and the chance to express it.

Dang!

If a post had to be made like this, something pretty bad must have happened! Don’t tell me, I’m not even going to ask.

For the most part though, I think Cat Scratch Reader is a great cut ahead of most other blogs. We don’t have a bunch of people spamming their advertisements here, or not for long before they got blocked. We don’t have people coming into the room flaming, and when we do a good rough shakedown usually straightens them out to where they quit that stuff. We’ve actually had people convert to our readers and become regular contributors here. That’s one important thing I’ve not been able to see before in other blogs. Usually they just get banned and that’s the end of that.

I’d just say that instead of fighting the trolls, simply use the action/flag motion. By arguing with the trolls, you simply accomplish what they’ve set out to do in their poor, meaningless lives: Cause strife. That’s the entire reason they’re here. Usually, the typical definition of a troll is someone who has had a bad day at work, they come home, and they get on the internet and they say to themselves “You know, I’m going to get on this messenger board here and I’m going to cause a great fuss. Yeah. I’m going to post all sorts of offensive/suggestive material in order to piss them off, and therefore grow satisfied when people react to it.”

There is only one way to handle people like that.

I came to SB Nation at the beginning of the year

I thought it was great how intelligent and informative MOST of the posters were. It was a welcome change from the comments on NFL.com; “YEAH! #$%% Cowboys=the best in the world for ever, Giants= #$%!&* #%!&!%$ pieces of %$”- That doesnt happen often around here and Im thanful for it. We had some trouble like this over at Big Blue View, people ganging up and making fun of someone for petty thing(spelling, grammar that sort of thing), It took a post like this one to sober everyone up and get us all back to discussing football (and of course, the occasional cheerleader). Good work James someone has to show maturity and have the courage to be wise- Sapere Ause-

I’ll talk Australia any day of the week. In fact the only reason I go on this site (I dont really fell any way, good or bad, about the Panthers) is to see what James the Aussie has written.

BTW I dont speak Latin either but I know that phrase.
