Carolina Panthers’ Hump Day Prognostication (New York Giants edition)
Good morning Panther faithful, and happy hump day! Coming off the Panthers' steadfast victory over the Minnesota Vikings, their Christmas present this week is another trip back to the Meadowlands; where the Carolina Panthers (6-8) face the New York Giants (8-6) in their second to last game of the season.
The 2009 story of both the New York Giants and the Carolina Panthers is strikingly similar. Both are teams who were the preseason favorite to win their respective division, both have risen to the occasion and beat some of the league's best, both have played down to some of their opponents, and both are currently 3rd in their divisions. While the Panthers have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, the Giants are still trying to make a late season push to nab a Wild Card. So, how does this game shake out? Let's examine the matchup:
After the jump...
NY Giants run offense vs. Carolina run defense
The Giants were supposed to be displaying one of the best rushing attacks in 2009, but has been slightly lackluster in this regard. Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw form a solid pairing, but not a dominant one. Let's not forget, preseason there were plenty of people who said the Jacobs/Bradshaw pairing was better than Double Trouble, which has not rung true in 2009. This does not mean their not deadly, however. Jacobs is a LB who happens to play RB... a tank who rarely busts the big run, but will pick up the hard yards. Meanwhile, Bradshaw has every down potential and is a true goal line threat.
The Panthers' run defense is far from stellar statistically. With the exception of last week, they seem to be made out of wet paper. Including the Minnesota game the Panthers have allowed a 130.25 yard average on the ground the last 4 games. While there is the possibility they can stuff Jacobs and Bradshaw like they did Peterson, it's unlikely.

NY Giants pass offense vs. Carolina pass defense
This is where the Giant's offense really excels. Their NFL 9th ranked pass offense is punctuated with 3 young receivers who have all made a mark in 2009. I have a distinct feeling that in a couple more years we could be talking about Steve Smith, Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks in the same category as Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston in terms of overall effectiveness as a WR corps. Couple this with Eli Manning who's having one of his best years as a pro, and a solid TE in Kevin Boss and the Giants make for a formidable offense.
Meanwhile the Carolina Panthers' 4th ranked pass defense held up yet again vs. the Vikings. When your pass rush results in an LT getting benched and the opposing head coach wants to bench his QB for fear of injury you know they're getting the job done. I think they get it done again this week.
Edge: Carolina Panthers

Carolina run offense vs. NY Giants run defense
The Carolina Panthers' run offense proved that despite injuries they could prevail. Geoff Schwartz was solid filling in at RT, Mackenzey Bernadeau held his ground and ultimately allowed a Carolina run offense to allow Jonathan Stewart over 100 yards rushing against the Vikings, a feat that had previously not been achieved since 2007.
On the other side of the ball the Giants boast the 8th ranked run defense in the NFL, holding opponents to 99.8 rushing yards per game. Ultimately, however, I just don't think they can hang with the Panthers.
Edge: Carolina Panthers

KEY MATCHUP: Carolina pass offense vs. NY Giants pass defense
Last week I said of Matt Moore ‘he's efficient, but not dynamic'. Last week against Minnesota the young QB was both. He got Steve Smith involved early and often and hopes to continue this trend this week. However, Carolina fans should not hold their breath that last Sunday's performance is easily repeatable, especially against this Giants defense.
The Giants' pass defense is ranked 10th in the NFL, and are extremely efficient at covering opposing WRs and not allowing routes to fully develop. This could potentially rattle Matt Moore. From a turnover perspective the Giants are able to grab the ball at multiple positions. Thus far in 2009 they have 13 team interceptions by 7 different defensive players. While I do see this matchup being the one that makes or breaks the game, ultimately I think the Giants gain the upper hand.
Edge: NY Giants
-
Special Teams
We currently have a thread open discussing why special teams are so bad, and who is to blame. If there is a consistent letdown by the Carolina Panthers it is definitely their special teams. I don't see anything changing this week. That being said, if there is any team to match our lack of ST production it's the NY Giants whose special teams have been almost equally lackluster.
Edge: Push
-
Coaching
It's tough to know what we're going to see out of the Panthers this week. Last week vs. Minnesota at least Jeff Davidson attempted to open up the book a little relying on flare routes, end arounds and deep passes to spice up the offense. Ron Meeks remains the coaching standout of the Carolina Panthers while John Fox is still guiding this ship through rough waters.
On the other side of the field is Tom Coughlin. Coughlin is, in my mind, one of the best coaches in the NFL. He's well established and knows his team; Easy answer to this one.
Edge: NY Giants
-
Final Summary
The Panthers are evaluating their talent now for a strong push in the 2010 campaign. The jury is still out on whether Matt Moore is the bonafide future of the QB position, but he's showing promise. We're also seeing what kind of depth we have on the roster.
Meanwhile the Giants are fighting tooth and nail to grab a wild card spot. The cards are stacked against them, but they're not out yet. I expect the Giants to bring everything at home on Sunday, but ultimately I think the Panthers prevail. Nothing is more dangerous than a team with nothing to lose.

Carolina. We are very hard to beat when we score 20.

I want to see Moore under a lot of pressure
We know he can make the necessary throws. We know he can make plays rolling out of the the pocket. We know he can hit Smitty deep. NOW I want to see what he does with defenders in his face all day. Does he find ways to make plays? Simply protect the ball preventing turn overs? Or pull a Jake and force the ball ultimately into defenders hands?

That certainly happened in Foxboro.
They just didn’t catch it.

Even if your ridiculous accusation that it's all Smitty's fault is true
Then let’s at least use the QB that throws the balls that he catches. How about that?

It’s gonna be another good one; one team playing for playoffs another for redemption of pride and a hopeful next season. I think it’ll be rather close much of the game such as when we played them this time last season, except this time I won’t be having a near stroke if we lose in OT again. Let’s hope the winning version of our team shows up like they did last week, God knows they’re much more fun to watch.
Any news on Williams and his ankle?
Not likely until Friday.
We’ll know if and how much he practices today and tomorrow, but don’t expect Fox to give any more than that until the P/Q/D/O comes out.

its shocking to find out the giants are ranked 10th for pass D
they had pretty bad games earlier in the season with their secondary, like getting ripped apart by the eagles… but i think they had a backup QB play as a safety because of injuries…
Maybe PS QB Rhett Bomar in practice...
David Carr certainly wasn’t getting game snaps as a DB.

+ Turnover margin for the Panthers = Win
The Giants o-line has had issues. We need to get pressure on Manning to keep the score down
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
"We're also seeing what kind of depth we have on the roster."
For this reason, I’d be more than happy to see guys like Duke Robinson, Charly Martin, Kenny Moore, Charles Johnson, Everette Brown, and the young DBs get their roles expanded in favor of the vets at their positions. Winning is nice, but losing can only improve our draft positions (even if we don’t have a first, we have several other picks, and a top-50 pick in the 2nd certainly has the potential to produce a significant contributor.)

This will be a difficult game and a huge challenge for the defense
The Giants offense has been lights out the last two weeks. James I agree with your assessment of Eli, Boss and the improvement of the Giants young core of receivers. Their power run game is still there, but ever since the loss of Burriss, teams are crowding the box more and challengeing the Giants to pass. The Giants have a very realistic shot at the postseason if they can win these last two games. I know from experience that this will be an extremely hostile environment and the Panthers will have to overcome more than the Giants to come away with a win. However I will ignore all of that stuff and predict a 24-21 win for the Panthers.
We gotta get in Eli’s head to win this game!
They absolutely do.
They know that an 85% shot at the playoffs at 2-0 drops to less than a 25% chance if they even tie. They’ll certainly be giving it their all. Moore’s flopped in his last two games against teams in such a position (Dallas, NE), so he’ll have another chance to prove it.

Huge game for Matt
This is the game where we will see if Matt Moore is our starting QB for the future. On the road against a team that is fighting for a playoff spot…if you are the man Matt, then we will see
We will?
I’m not certain that one game will prove him as the “starter of the future” regardless. That process will need to take place over TC and the preseason next year, if it’s to be true.

Nice advance hedge there -- way to CYA
So even if he throws 3 more TD’s, with no INT’s and we win up in NJ, you still won’t be able to say he’s got the job, will you? TC and PS for a chance to “prove himself” to you. And of course anythign short of that, and you’ll not even give him that chance, as he’ll just be another bum sitting in for Jake.
And what will you say if he doesn't throw 3 TDs and no picks?
You’ll probably say he’s “working into a rhythm” or “familiarizing himself with the offense.”

ok big d simmer down and mp as well
U guys just gotta chill…this conflict is bordering Acffecting ur ability to reason…big d don’t expect 3 tds this week. There is no way to figure that this kid is going to come out and torch the giants. He plays good 2nd half ball but the first half makes me want to pound my head through a wall till I collapse. He overthows every friggin body! He gets the jitters and freaks out and looks like crap. But he does smooth out and looks good (compared to jake). But hopefully the vikes gave him the confidence he needs and can play well the whole game……and MP give the kid and the fans a chance. I was behind jake too but u gotta

Big D is rationally giving the guy a fair shot, and being honest about how Moore has compared to Jake this year
That is completely in line with most fans thinking. Procto is the one using crazy arguments to reason. Try telling every Panther fan you know that Jake should be starting next year because he’s as good as Joe Namath, and see how many agree with you.

theres no comparison between moore and jake at this point
Jake played like complete crap. He never did AMAZING. I was so happy when jake didn’t have a terrible day. But comparing them isn’t getting anybody anywhere. There no way around it it is what it is. But don’t go drinkin that kool aid too fast guys moore has still looked really bad for more than 50% of the game
can't wait till...
I don't think anyone here has declared that Moore should be the starter next year
No way has he proven yet that he should be anything more than a bridge to the future QB. Proctos the one exaggerating everyone’s comments, and sarcastically calling him “the savior”.
But you can compare many things about their performances this year. Jake has been inept at throwing the ball deep. Matt Moore has hit Smitty deep every game. Jake is a league leader in turn overs. Moore is averaging a third of an INT per game. Jake’s avg QB rating is 59.4, Moore’s is 88. I could go on. But this doesn’t mean he’s great. It just means this years he been able to do what Jake was unable to do.

by southtunnel on Dec 23, 2009 10:37 PM EST up reply actions
obviously
There’s no point in comparing the 2. Jake has been sooo bad this year. Jake couldn’t complete a deep pass. And moore has. And that’s enough for me to give him a shot next week. Let alone he doesn’t throw picks. But I’m taking this 1 week at a time. Some people have said that we can use that first pick on a WR and unless moore shows some improvement from week to week then you gotta be crazy to not pick up a qb with that first choice. And unless this kid gets between 1200 and 1500 yards passing and 10 tds then we need a qb with that first pick and a fa.

I never said he was going to torch the Giants, or that he'd throw 3 more TD's
What I DID say is that “even IF…” he did, Snark still wouldn’t concede he’d won the job.
Sure I’m the ONLY one here who bragged about Moore’s potential after the game he turned in against the Bucs — I even initiated a thread about his velocity and timed his release on every pass he threw that day. Since then he’s improved his # of completions, his QB rating, and his yardage in each game. So I’m his staunchest admirer here. Could he fail to deliver against the Giants? Sure. But until he does, I’m seeing his upside as outweighing his inexperience, and certainly giving him the credit he deserves for overcoming the virtual banishment he received at the hands of the coaching staff, who stubbornly clung to the past with Delhomme, until it removed us from the playoff picture.
Maybe a few of you should revisit the comments made about Moore during the period of 8:41PM and 10:45PM on the Game Day Open Thread. Here are just a few:
has no pocket presence — just can’t move the chains — nope, need to keep looking for a QB — positively awful — I was never high on him; don’t have many of the MM Kool-Aide drinkers on the thread tonight — how the hell is an NFL QB unable to take a snap? — why run that rollout again when he can’t throw on the run? — because he can’t throw any better in the pocket — he can’t make a good throw more than 6 yards down the field — God dammit Moore that was pathetic — he’s not good, either; he’s missed numerous throws — more like a temp you hire to keep the chair warm; not seeing too many leadership qualities out there.
Then after 11:04, the posts got more charitable. If you see your words in there, ask yourself — did you maybe judge prematurely? Remember, when the game was OVER, and the results were tallied, he was 21 for 33, for 273 net passing yards.
My reasoning has never been better.
Show me one illogical post I’ve made, and explain why. Don’t lump me in with Snark, whose only purpose is to obfuscate (yeah, look it up.)
it just seems to me
That the 2 of you will say whatever as long as it contridicts the other. Just an opinion maybe its a bad 1 I don’t mean to offend you. But none the less I beilieve you are too high on moore and mp is too low. Mp is too high on jake (if u said he’s broadway joe you too high on something pal) everyone else seems to know how valuable jake is today. If you really believe he’s awesome than good for you.
But by improvement I mean those passes that are flying 10 feet over WRs heads for a good chunck of the game, doesn’t happen. If he takes untill halftime to control himself this week and the next then I don’t even want the kid on the bench. Maybe that’s y he was only allowed to throw 1 pass in the arizona game. But if that’s the way he is and our qb gets hurt and we need the backup to come in and make some play/protect the ball, he’s not the guy.
If he gets his act together by the 2nd qtr this week then ill be impressed. If he comes out against the saints and has his act together on the first drive then ill be excited.
But so far it looks to me that he’s scared…of getting hit or throwing picks I dunno but he looks uncomfortable when he is just fine, and he over throws because of it. And then after the half he’s like hey this isn’t that scary and then he looks great. I don’t want another jake. I want a guy who can put the ball where it is supposed to be. Who can make a decent reciever look good, a good reciever look great and a great reciver unstoppable! I hope he can do it…I even make excuses for him. But ill be all out of excuses in 2 weeks.
What have you done for me lately?

Steve, if Moore repeats the 1st half/2nd half routine again, you're right
At this point, I’m basing my unbridled optimism about him on the fact that the best quarter of football he’s ever played was his most recent.
A detractor of his would say that’s not enough goof production to extrapolate from — and they’d be right, so far as that goes.
But I think he DID help make a great receiver (Smith) unstoppable last week; he DID help make a decent receiver (Barnidge) look good last week.
Forgive my optimism. I see the future as bright.
that he did
And I don’t want to mess with your optimism at all my friend. I hope he shakes it off and is great. These 2 weeks will me a good measuring stick I think. And I’m big on barnidge my man he will be a weapon.
What have you done for me lately?
He certainly can be.
Just needs to focus on his blocking technique so he can get on the field in the early downs.

he needs to get better at it thats for sure
I hope he will show improvement on blocking by next year. Great downfield threat though. But we need a qb who can get it to him
What have you done for me lately?
Right, because preseason performance is a way better judge, than actual real games
And against teams that are trying to make the playoffs… This game proves nothing! We need to see how he does in TC without pads, and where no one can tackle him.

Giants Pass Defense
Giants fan here, and first and foremost allow me to say good luck to you guys this Sunday. Big game for both teams… kind of a different meaning then what I predicted at the start of the year. I thought we’d be here again battling it out for number 1 again, but alas.
The reason our Pass Defense is so high is because the Giants munched on easy opponents. We were the number one ranked Pass Defense until we played the Saints, and after that we got exposed big time. Our secondary is in shambles. As of now we’re playing with two starters. Corey Webster, our shut down cornerback, is hurt. Kenny Phillips is obviously out, and Aaron Ross, Webster’s backup, is hurt. Our secondary looks to be Terrell Thomas (a nice player, and essentially the only threat at Cornerback we have), Kevin Dockery (a mediocre backup), Aaron Rouse (a nice safety against the run, but he can bite on coverage), and Michael Johnson (awful safety. People blamed C.C. Brown for our earlier faults, but this guy is just as bad. Target the guy he should be covering and you’ll smoke us).
The thing is, I have no idea how good the Giants are, and really the game is going to boil down to one thing: is the Giants D-Line any good? For five weeks that line broke through and seemed unstoppable, and that was without FA pick up Chris Canty. And then they just vanished, and that’s primarily why the Giants lose so many games. It’s not Eli’s fault, he’s having his best year, and the WR are great. The problem is our D-Line is garbage, and our biggest weakness because it allows a good Quarterback to torch our secondary. What the game will boil down to is “will Tuck, Robbins, Cofield, Kiwi, and Osi get penetration?”
If yes, then I see the Giants running away with this. Eli has looked better than ever, and the running game seems to be gelling over the last few weeks. If not, well you could put any QB in there and watch him pick us apart. Again, good luck to you guys, but I’m really hoping for a win. If for nothing else than to keep the Cowboys out of the playoffs, and we all want that, right?
Yeah, I agree
The Giants Pass D is not that scary. Case in point, I had Rivers and Favre, I started Rivers over Favre and that paid off. Their secondary will bite on fakes, and if we can get some ground game going, the PA will be absolutely lethal.
The early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

That was the one game the D played well in the losing streak
Until the last drive, Rivers was intercepted twice, and we stopped their running game.
But then that last drive happened…

its too early to go that direction
But it will matter. The play calling will be huge. There won’t be time to drop back. Untill some passes are completed behind the blitz. 89 in the slot running a slant across the middle will put a halt to it though. If the play calling is there then I believe moore can shine this week. But we won’t have a whole half for him to overthrow everyone this week.

I agree for the most part with your analysis
The only thing I really don’t agree is both teams Pass offense vs Pass defense, and your final score
I’m not saying we can’t lose, but I don’t think you’ll beat us with only 19 points. high 20’s, 30’s is my prediction of the amount of points you’d need to beat us.

Exactly
That’s why I said you’d need more than 19 points to beat us.
Look at our avg scoring on offense.
Take away the Denver game where everyone was gassed in the mntns, and I think we’d be averaging near 30+ pts a game.
I don’t know enough about the Panther’s defense to suggest they’d hold us to 13 points, as was the prediction.
And if it becomes a shootout, the giants are more prepared for that imho than the Panthers.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
who do you think has the better offense?
The giants or the vikings?…how well do you guys do after turnovers? If we stop the running game then it should be over, I’m not worried about anyones passing game. So I’m predicting a 24-14 panthers.
What have you done for me lately?
I think our Offense is better to be honest
And our running game has been stopped many times, to little detriment of Eli.
This game will become a shoot out.
And when the shooters are Matt Moore, and Eli Manning, I’ll take Eli every time.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
Also, look at the defenses we've played
Redskins: Before last Monday, they’re defense was the only good thing about them
Eagles: We ripped their defense apart. I don’t know enough about the Panthers defense, but if you’re saying the panthers defense is better than the eagle’s defense, I won’t believe you.
Cowboys: We shut down Demarcus Ware twice.
The only defense that’s shut us down was the Broncos. While I don’t like to make excuses, that game was on short rest a mile above sea level. If that wasn’t on thanksgiving, we wouldn’t have lost that badly.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
" but if you’re saying the panthers defense is better than the eagle’s defense, I won’t believe you. "
I live in the Philly area and see all the games, and trust me on this: over the last three weeks the Panthers defense has been far & away better than the Eagles defense. The Sunday night Eagles Giants game, while exciting, was one of the worst exhibitions of tackling I’ve seen in the NFL this season. With that said, I do agree that the Giants offense is gonna be a huge challenge and test for the Panthers defense. But don’t underestimate this group.
"But don’t underestimate this group"
that’s true.
Underestimating the opponent is the worst thing any team can do. This’ll all be settled sunday, which sadly, I will only be able to see the first half of. I expect this to be a good game, just with the right team coming out on top :)
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
Do you believe Matt Moore will lead the panther's offense to 30+ pts?
Hey it could happen, but I wouldn’t bet on Moore winning the shootout.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
The Moore fluffers will tell you he once did.
And against a division winner, no less! As a rookie! Unfortunately, I think the Giants defense will be starting more than the three starters Tampa did that day back in ’07.

our #1 CB is probably going to be out
and Aaron Ross, a Corner/Safety might be out too.
That leaves Terrell Thomas to cover Stevonne Smith, which is necessarily a bad thing for us. Thomas is our solidest Corner, doesn’t get beat, and I believe leads our team in interceptions.
Whoever gets the most pressure on the other team’s QB, and forces the most mistakes, wins this game.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
"Both are teams who were the preseason favorite to win their respective division'
Actually nobody picked us to win the division — both N.O. and Atlanta were expected by all experts to finish higher; we were solidly picked to be 3rd. Most of this was due to our tough schedule, when factoring in the W-L records from 2008 of our opponents this year.
Most prognosticators had us at 8-8 or 7-9, and that’s about where we’ll end up, after a rough start, and turnovers dooming us in early games that we had a very good chance to win. Before the season got underway, you could’ve gotten 285 for 100 if we’d won the division.
Turnovers and injuries will be looked back on as too much to overcome, for even a team with as much heart as the Panthers have shown.
As the ol’ Brooklyn Dodgers’ fans used to say, “Wait’ll next year!”
I don't think turnovers and injuries were the problem
Sure that’s made things tougher. But other than Kemo, who I don’t really think is that stellar anyways, we were wrecking the season before the injuries started. We went into the bye without a single win. Even with 0 injuries I’m not sure we’d be in playoff contention right now.

Chris Harris was out for every one of those games as well.
Overheard in press box, from local reporter: 'If this Moore kid was any good, they'd be up 31-0 right now.'

Adjusting to the scheme,
and playing with 297 pound Nick Hayden at NT hurt us as well.

The running game will be key
The giants run defense has not been strong ever since their 5-0 start, plain and simple. Just looking at their schedule, they have only faced a few teams with a decent running attack. Williams and Stewart will run all the field, and Moore will be able to make the throws he has to against a weak giants secondary. FInal score will be 27-14 Panthers
First time on the site
James, way to rep the Aussie fans of the NFL! You’re the first aussie on SB Nation that I have noticed that has any power. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!
Some may have given up on the Giants this season, but they WILL make the playoffs.
Oi! Oi! Oi!
Thank you ChuckyofNorris… I appreciate it.
I gotta rep the Aussies!

34-17 Giants
Sorry guys but the Giants r fired up and will dominate like they did against the Skins. Carolina def isnt Washington but i think the Giants will be way to much for them to handle. 150+ yards from Brandon and Ahmad, Eli throws for over 300. Giants pass rush gets to Moore at least 3 times for the sack and hits him repeatidly all game

The mirror image of what I see, Gmen Fan
Our RB’s go for 150+, we sack Eli 3-4 times and he goes off crying for his mama. Can’t say Moore will get 300 yards, but it’ll be close, and with 2 TD’s.
34-17 — you had that part right!
wow was i wrong
you guys looked good.. sad day to be a giants fan :(
