Who is Panthers back-up QB Matt Moore? What if He Succeeds?
As we know, Jake Delhomme has languished as Carolina Panthers starting quarterback. Those problems came to a head once again Sunday, when the Jets coaxed the Breaux Bridge native into throwing four interceptions and breaking his finger.
Enter Matt Moore. Number 3. 25 years of age from Van Nuys, California. Who is this guy? What are his credentials? Here are some things to consider:
Moore attended William S. Hart High School in Newhall, California. While there he played quarterback and defensive back and was ranked the number eight signal-caller in America and the Far West Offensive Player of the Year by SuperPrep. Led Hart to a 13-0 record and a section championship his senior season. Moore was set to stay close to home, signing with the UCLA Bruins. There, Moore was supposed to redshirt, but injuries forced him to be the first true freshman Bruin quarterback to start a game since Cade McNown. In his first collegiate game, he led the Bruins on seven scoring drives as they knocked off the Stanford Cardinal.
Things weren't endless paradise for Moore in LA, though. He got hurt his sophomore season, and once he got healthy, he could not regain the starting job from Drew Olson. Moore felt slighted. He transferred to the College of the Canyons in Santa Clara and did not play football there. He had not played any baseball since high school, but the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of California of Planet Earth drafted him in the 22nd round after seeing him play in a semipro league.
Moore considered playing baseball, but at the end of the day, elected against it. Colorado State had Moore's interest, but in the end, Oregon State got Moore's enrollment. There, he worked hard from the moment he got into training camp and won the starting job in camp. That year, he racked up 2,711 yards, the ninth-highest total ever in a single season recorded at Oregon State. Moore had the second-most passing yards in the conference that year, next to USC's Matt Leinart.
He started all 13 games for the Beavers his senior year. He was named All-Pac-10 honorable mention and led his team to a bowl victory over Mizzou. Moore was not drafted into the NFL after that season, but he was signed by the Cowboys for the preseason. In that preseason, he was dazzling, completing 21 of 29 passes for 182 yards, a touchdown and no picks and generating a 100.1 quarterback rating. After the preseason, the Cowboys cut Moore, hoping to sign him to the practice squad if he could clear waivers. But that wouldn't happen. The Panthers picked Moore up, slating him to be the team's third-string quarterback.
Moore saw his first action in the fifth game of the 2007 campaign, getting some relief work in against the Saints. Moore's first ever pass was a 43-yard completion to Keary Colbert. He was still way behind on the depth chart, however. But injuries to Delhomme and Vinny Testeverde, and awful play by David Carr, led to Moore starting the final three games of the 2007 season. There, he played great in three games against playoff teams, leading the Panthers to a 2-1 close against the Seahawks, Cowboys, and Bucs. For that effort, Moore was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month.
Since then, Moore has not started. He has had to rely on occasional relief duty, looking below average in the process. Now, with Delhomme struggling and, ALLEGEDLY, hurt, Moore should get his chance. The married man (I saw his wife shaking the salvation army bell outside the gates before the Falcons game) has a chance to make a great life for himself. If he plays well, chances are he gets to finish the season as the team's starter. After that, who knows what his future holds. But, if he does well, what do the Panthers do?
My take is Moore playing well would be the ultimate win for the Carolina Panthers. As you know, they traded their first round pick for Everette Brown. So, in all likelihood, the likes of Jake Locker, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, and Sam Bradford will be off the board by the time the Panthers make their first selection. If Moore can establish himself as a franchise-type quarterback, then whoever the coach is next year, and it won't be Fox, will be able to sit back and smile. Because he will know that the days of Delhomme are over, and the days of hope are upon us.

Three touchdowns to five interceptions against three teams with nothing to play for is great? For an undrafted rookie making his first three starts, it’s reasonably decent, but nowhere near great.
to be honest he only threw one int in the games he started
the other five were fox needing someone with the best arm to chuck it down the field and he was our man

Nicely done Adam
If this is original content then I would agree its pretty good. Keep it coming if you like…
Disagree that Fox will be gone this offseason. I’m thinking he survives another season and Hurney is not allowed to trade away another future 1st round pick. Then if the Panthers suck again the new coach will have a nice draft pick to start with.
I agree though Matt Moore has skills. I think he will be another Panther draft pick John Fox should have started playing sooner, similar to Steve Smith, Richard Marshall and DeAngelo Williams.

Feeley right? Jake as 3rd QB?
actually if it gets to that then just run the wildcat…let D-Will chuck up a couple passes to keep them honest. Couldn’t hurt any worse

Sounds like something from the Lord of the Rings. I could almost hear Aragorn saying it.
I think you forgot to mention...

Yep,
its good to be specific. Who knows what planet it could be on?
I don’t know if I would have taken the football route if the Angels were knocking on my door, though.
Nice post Adam
Good bio of Matt Moore and I found out alot more about his career before Oregon State.
Only critique is the ‘allegedly hurt’ remark. It’s a pretty strong charge to accuse the Panthers of falsely representing an injury as they need to present all that information to the NFL. It seems like a lot of effort to pretend Jake broke a finger and circulate photos of his bandaged hand just to save face.

Yeah I'm going to call BS
on the calls of BS. You don’t fake injuries in the NFL, teammates would call you out, just look at Pittsburgh.
Nice bio, from your previous posts here I would of thought this was something you weren’t capable of. Keep it up. I’m one of the people from different timezones, and this site really helps me keep connected.

Didn't a Patriots DT fake an injury in a game to stop the clock?
which lead to a rule change

They also cheated.
Wouldn’t put much past the pats.

Oh, btw, I finally uploaded a photo to my profile
Bonus points to the first person to correctly guess which former Panther is in the photo with me!
Adam nice post...
You did a good job of researching the subject. Please don’t blow a fuse but I’d like to ask…did u “write” the entire biography or was there any cuttin’ & pastin’? You wanna make sure u don’t get accused of plagerism.
If the article is all you, U should think about some journalism classes. I see some potential in you!
i am a comm major, so i am good at writing
always have been. i also do broadcast stuff. Here is some of my work:

As for this article, I wrote it in its entirety. Most of the facts I got from wikipedia, thats the only site where i could find extensive bio on moore. i didnt copy and paste any sentences though. Also, the marriage part i knew without research. obviously i dont have the ability to interview moore so i have to get the actual facts from online sources and i can then structure it into nice sentences
Well done then..
BTW…you can copy & paste other peoples stuff (I do it all the time) but you also need to link it or give them credit somehow to make it legit.
To echo the other sentiment…I thought it was was written.

Nice read
I’ve always felt Moore has been shat, spat, & stepped on since he’s been here. The kid never gets a chance to perform with the first string & when he does, he shines(see December 2007). Fox is so stubbornly blind & loyal to a fault. Just like his bonehead decision to sit Williams while he started Fumbles Foster. lol. His judgement on talent is tainted by his loyalties. Good luck Sunday Moore, I hope you light it up, but knowing Fox, he will keep it very conservative to prevent himself from looking like the idiot he is for saying that Joke Gohomme gave them the best chance of winning. lol. This Sunday will actually be a Sunday I will look forward to. I am very excited, relieved, & happy to see finally see “moore” of Moore.
"it's a bad day to have a bad day"
yo
we looked great against michigan state the other day, and it was awesome watching Dook lose to WISCONSIN hahahah
Here's my analogy on Fox on that
its like your running low on toothpaste so you buy a new tube right? Well John Fox will still squeeze that old tube (the vet) until he gets just the last little tad out of it before he chunks it an uses the new one (the rook).
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Can't fault the man for that...
I always do that too ;)

kinda like the dude in the mcdonald's tv commercial
with the tube of toothpaste in the vise — “using all the toothpaste….”
perfect analogy Jaxon
yup...Fox will never be accused of dumping the aging vet too soon...
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
There may be some perfectly good toothpaste in that tube still
Why waste money on a new tube?
by Flowing Willow on Dec 4, 2009 1:44 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, but...
…if you’ve already got the new tube of a different brand just sitting there, and squeezing the old one is giving you blisters on your fingers….it is time to use the new tube. You can still keep the old tube in your medicine cabinet as a standby, just in case the new tube of paste tastes like a cat’s ass.
But what does that do to the confidence of the tubes
if you keep flip-flopping them around?
by Flowing Willow on Dec 5, 2009 5:55 AM EST up reply actions
I don't know about tubes of toothpaste....
But when you try that with women, most of the time it just doesn’t turn out very well.
Double Trouble; we've got the best running backs in the NFL that never see the ball!
Metaphor was squeezed a little too much there. ; )
I like D-Ranged’s metaphor better.
