How About Charlie Weis to Carolina?
This is pure speculation on my part hence the Fanpost versus FP story but thought its worth discussing. The Panthers obviously need to make some changes on offense and special teams so why not fire Davidson and bring in Charlie Weis? He seems to prefer the type of offense John Fox prefers, more of a short-passing game, passes to the RB and other low-risk play selection. I'm sure he will end up somewhere back in the NFL in the offseason:
It makes sense to wonder if Weis, who was very well-regarded as an NFL offensive coordinator, might end up back with the Patriots. What's Bill Belichick say? Not right now, but in the offseason, one never knows.
So is anyone out there impressed with Weis? Would he be a fit here?

I love Weis the OC, not the HC
People seem to forget how effective he was at not only play calling, but making the most of the roster he had. Prior to the Randy Moss and Wes Welker acquisitions Tom Brady had no WRs of note, yet Weis was still able to call and design plays that would result in wins.
He would be the perfect fit to create gameplans that utilize our players’ strengths, not the ‘force a round peg into a square hole’ method that seems to be excecuted by Jeff Davidson.
My only concern: He LOVES Jimmy Clausen- and I would be concerned that his addition would entain trying to convince Hurney to trade the house to move up and draft him (provided Moore doesn’t work).

As an OC, most definitely
He would be a great OC to bring in. Of course, anything is an upgrade over Davidson, but in all seriousness — Weis would be a good addition to the staff.

I wouldn’t mind him here at all. We need someone with a terrific offensive mind and a good gameplan to utilize the weapons we have here on offense, and Weis might be able to do that. However, I seriously doubt the Panthers will go after him. We never really sign anyone of any popularity or stardom here in Carolina (minus perhaps K. Johnson).
I doubt Carolina would get into a bidding war for his services.

They might...
it should be clear that the main problem on offense is two-fold: 1) lack of skill at QB, and 2) lack of any kind of offensive game-plan that plays to our strengths.
An OC like Weis will solve a lot of our problems — he would definitely get good use out of Double Trouble on screens, etc. and would call plays to make Jake (or Moore, or Feeley, or whomever we trot out there) a respectable enough threat to throw the ball that defenses will stop thinking run every single play.

+1
It seems assanine to me to ram a philosophy down anyones throat. That is one of the reasons the Patriots have been successful. Play to your players strengths!!! The NFL is a very fast changing system. Note 12-4 last year, to what the f***k this year? The rest of the league was ready for our same-ole-sh**. And Fox does not adjust. If you are not creative enough to utilize your players strengths while at the same time follow a general philosophy then perhaps you are not the best suited to be a head coach in the NFL

If a coach is not willing to change then the game will past him by...
He will have a short half-life…

Trust me I don’t mind him coming here, but we all know that is unlikely with the way this team does business. Hopefully, if Fox is still here, he can talk him into possibly coming here. That could be the only reason to really keep Fox, pin all of his hopes on Weiss’ offensive capability.
If he is offered a head coaching position though somewhere else, the game will be up.

If Fox is still around and Davidson’s gone, it has a decent chance. Weis and Fox are apparently good friends.. In fact, Fox wanted to hire him back in 02 when he took over, but Weis stayed in NE.

Really? thanks i'll look that up
and bingo, here you go:
FOX MUM ON WEIS: When John Fox was hired as head coach here in 2002, he tried to lure his old buddy Charlie Weis away from New England to be his offensive coordinator.
However, Weis elected to stay in New England and two years later helped the Patriots beat Fox and the Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
With Weis unemployed after being fired by Notre Dame and Carolina’s offense struggling, Fox was asked if he might consider adding Weis to his staff next season.
"Right now we have a full staff," Fox said. "Those types of things aren’t done until after the season. But Charlie Weis is a very good football coach."
Of course, the bigger question might be if Fox will be around next season.

Why don’t you like Weis for OC?
Interested in another perspective.

A definite NO
if there is any chance he needs Clausen as his QB. Not worth trading up for that.
Otherwise… I’m still not a fan.
Yes, he’s better than Davidson (who isn’t?), but I’d look in another direction.
His system worked in NE because he had Brady.
I know he wasn’t just the OC in Notre Dame, but whatever he tried there failed.
Plus, if I remember correctly… his offense seems a bit too pass-happy for my likes.
We need a OC who realizes the strength is at RB (D-Will, Stewie, Goodson?), and gets them involved in as many ways as possible.

I'm not a N.D. fan...
So I don’t know but what was/is their strength? If they had a good QB, perhaps he was playing to their strength… The same would have been with N.E.
If he’s an O.C. that plays to his teams strengths and his teams have had good QB’s and WR’s, perhaps that is why his offense was pass happy…
If not – no more Davidson! (Including clones)

I would LOVE Weiss as an OC for us
Pretty much any assistant from the Belichick coaching tree would be a good hire. Not as head coach though, we’ve all seen how much success they’ve had.

I hope Foxy stays
And I hope Weis comes. From Weis’ perspective, Carolina will offer him a chance to:
1) Choose and groom a QB of the future
2) Play for a solid organization that consistently (every other year) has a shot at the play-offs.
3) Work with J. Fox, supposedly the two are friends.
With Meeks on the Defense and Weis on the Offense, I would hope that the days of being “Out coached” by other teams would be behind us.

Problems arise, though, if "QB of the future"
requires a first round guy and/or Jimmy Clausen.

I can't imagine Weis would have a requirement like that
Getting Clausen may be out of the Panthers control. Brady was a 6th round pick…meaning even the Patriots passed on him 5 times before picking him.

I would really hope that the guy was professional enough to understand and accept that Clausen may be out of reach.

I'm all for it...
as my late-post-poll showed. He has great offensive “pedigree,” as such things go. I disagree that he would bring a “pass-happy” attack to Carolina. Fox would make sure that we’re still a power-rushing team. What makes that offensive scheme work, is the down field vertical play action pass. A good OC can set that up nicely. It would be nice, also, to have some innovation on that side of the ball. Meeks’ is certainly getting things done on the defensive side…now we need someone to revamp the offense.

Also....
Perhaps Weis’ friendship with Fox would provide a bit of ‘leverage’ in convincing him of a slightly less…. Foxy…. offensive gameplan, and “NEW THIS YEAR!!!!! 2010!!!!! HALF TIME ADJUSTMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!”

Yep
Skimmed the comments here, but I think I agree with the majority of the posts that I saw wanting him as OC but definitely not HC. I think he can be a great OC in this league.
