Carolina Panthers’ Hump Day Prognostication (Minnesota Vikings edition)

Good morning Panther faithful and happy hump day! Twelve lords a leapin'? Not quite. This is the current number of Carolina Panthers on injured reserve. It's been a horrible 2009 campaign for injuries, but it could be worse; both the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have 18 players on the IR. After the loss Jeff Otah yesterday the injury ravaged Carolina Panthers (5-8) host the dynamic Minnesota Vikings (11-2) in the last of the Panthers' nationally televised games on Sunday night.

Though not officially announced at the time of this article it appears Matt Moore will be making his third start in a row under center for the beleaguered Carolina Panthers offense. So what does this week hold for the Cats? Find out:

After the jump...

Star-divide

Minnesota run offense vs. Carolina run defense

There's this guy who dons the purple every week. He's pretty good from what I hear... what is his name? Oh yeah, Adrian Peterson. If you aren't aware of Peterson's exploits you've been living under a rock for the last two NFL seasons. Peterson is easily one of the top 5 running backs in the NFL, and some want to anoint him as the next Walter Payton. I'm not willing to go quite that far, but Peterson is an outstanding running back.

Meanwhile, the Panthers' run defense is far from stellar allowing 137.3 yards on the ground each week (26th in the NFL). If the Panthers want to make some plays in this area they will have to force Peterson to fumble, which isn't a wholly difficult prospect as he's put the ball on the turf 6 times thus far in 2009.

Edge: Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota pass offense vs. Carolina pass defense

In times of yore purple was reserved as a color for kings... so how fitting the Mississippi Methuselah wears the color for the season likely to be his swansong. Brett Favre has found the fountain of youth in Minnesota turning in a MVP caliber season. Thus far Favre has over 3,000 yards, 27 TDs, only 6 INTs while posting a QB rating of 106. A good reason for this resurgence is a veritable smorgasbord of effective wide receivers. Led by a product of the Carolina's- Sidney Rice, the Vikings also have rookie Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian rounding out their receiving corps. Couple this with Visanthe Shiancoe at TE and the Vikings are very deadly ranked 11th in the NFL in passing.

Meanwhile the Carolina Panthers' 6th ranked pass defense has been a bright spot in an otherwise dark season. We've seen the NFL's best and brightest and held the vast majority of passing defenses below their season averages. It would be nice to still have Thomas Davis to keep opposing tight ends honest, but all in all I think the pass D can step up again.

Edge: Carolina Panthers

KEY MATCHUP: Carolina run offense vs. Minnesota run defense

The Carolina Panthers' run offense is a wounded animal at this point. With injuries to both Jordan Gross and Jeff Otah, the normally calm edges do not provide safe harbor for Double Trouble. In the latter part of 2009 the Carolina Panthers' depth on the offensive line has been tested, and been found wanting for the most part. That being said, both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart have big play potential every time they touch the ball. The Panthers still hold strong at 4th in the NFL in rushing, despite slightly weakened performances the last two weeks.

Conversely, the Minnesota Vikings are boasting a very stout run defense. They have an extremely efficient group of LBs led by Chad Greenway who leads the team in tackles. Their run defense is currently ranked 4th in the NFL and this battle of the number 4's proves to be the most intriguing aspect of Sunday night's game.

Edge: Push

Carolina pass offense vs. Minnesota pass defense

As we embark on week three of the Matt Moore experiment it's starting to look a little more like a 4th grade science fair project than a Nobel Prize winner. Moore has been efficient, but not dynamic. After facing two fairly weak pass defenses in his first two outings he's up against a rough defense this week. If Moore and the Panthers' 28th ranked pass offense hope to make any dents in the Vikings' armor he needs to get Steve Smith involved early, and often. Relying on the outlets again this week is not going to move the chains efficiently, especially when the run offense is in for a fight.

The Vikings' pass defense is ranked 11th in the NFL for good reason. The Vikings don't have any true ball hawks in the secondary (only nabbing 6 interceptions this season) but while they lack in this area they more than make up for in coverage. It will be a rough week for Moore.

Edge: Minnesota Vikings

Special Teams

Special teams have been drastically improved since the early weeks of 2009, but they're far from a strong point. The Panthers only average 19.9 yards per kickoff to the Vikings' 24.4 and the Panthers are allowing almost 11 yards per punt return to the Vikings' 9.1.

Edge: Minnesota Vikings

Coaching

Each week this proves to be the hardest aspect to prognosticate. The Panthers' coaching has been so up and down in 2009 it's near impossible to guess what will happen on Sundays. We still need to run the ball more and be more inventive on the offensive end; conversely the defensive coaching has been outstanding. Ron Meeks was a real find for the defense.

The Vikings are getting it done on both sides of the ball. The Panthers are getting it done on one side of the ball. This alone makes it a clear choice.

Edge: Minnesota Vikings

Final Summary

The Panthers are playing for pride, and to dampen some of the boundless excitement in the camp of San Francisco 49ers fans who await our 2010 1st round pick. Carolina is evaluating the talent and depth they have to better prepare them for a 2010 campaign. I know there is a convoluted scenario that shows how we can make the playoffs, but it would require a Christmas miracle of Charlie Brown proportions to make that a reality.

Meanwhile the Vikings are playing to retain the 1st round bye. The Vikings are a very, very good football team, but most people who read this article on a regular basis know I just can't pick against my Panthers... so my heavily biased prediction is:

Carolina Panthers 27 - Minnesota Vikings 24

Funny thing about that first round pick

With the uncapped season coming up the contracts for first round picks are going to be absurd. Dealing with those contracts if a cap comes back could be a major headache for years for teams with multiple first round picks. Think Peppers contract every year. I wonder if that may have been one of the reasons that Hurney was happy to see that pick go?

by Parmenides on Dec 16, 2009 10:38 AM EST reply actions

Had that same thought.

Although I hope they weren’t anticipating such a bad record from the onset, it would make fiscal sense to try and dump that pick in an uncapped year if you expect to pick high…

Especially for a small market team.

Just because salaries would be uncapped doesn’t mean the talent will magically rise to meet the wage. The risk of overspending on a bust will skyrocket.

Thanks for bringing that point up. It’s an interesting idea and it lends some credibility to Hurney’s ability to think-forward to what’s best for the team.

My take

I am excited to see the matchup between Antoine Winfield and Steve Smith. They are two very physical guys.

Also, Rookie – Jasper Brinkley Vs. your stable of capable backs.

by Vikes Fan on Dec 16, 2009 11:44 AM EST reply actions

Should be a great matchup.

Winfield is one of if not the most complete corner in the game. It’s night and day in the Vikes D with him back in.

Pound-for-pound him and Stevie might be the most dangerous players in the game at their positions.

Tough loss on EJ though. That was a nasty-looking break. Jasper’s going to have his work cut out for him : )

Normally I’d muster a little more trash-talk but I don’t have many good feelings about our squad going into this one.

Good luck on your run to the SB!

I’m worried how often Moore is gonna get a a face full of turf at the hands of Allen seeing as how the OL took yet another hit.

by EyeSack on Dec 16, 2009 11:53 AM EST reply actions

Funny thing on Allen...

Of those 12.5 sacks, 7.5 came from games against Green Bay alone.

Only two have been from outside of the division (San Francisco and Baltimore).

That’s no dig on Allen, he almost always gets pressure regardless. But it seems to me he does a better job of getting to the QB against teams he’s more familiar with.

by GuyIncognito on Dec 16, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

yea, true. And Moore seems able to scramble around a little better than Delhomme, maybe it wont be such a massacre as I was expecting, just a slight thrashing.

Viking d-line scares me

with our hodge-podge o-line, this may not fair well for run or pass. They are scary with how much pressure they can bring just with their front line, and with our edge guys on IR, this could be a whole lot of backs and quarterbacks on their behinds….

by toonman on Dec 16, 2009 11:54 AM EST reply actions

which, in Davidsons mind, equates to…. abandon the run at all costs!

by EyeSack on Dec 16, 2009 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

I can see it now..

He’s up for days on end with pen and pad formulating a game plan, writing, erasing, writing, erasing. Finally, a week deprived of sleep, he finishes… It simply reads… “pass”.

James you amaze me

I applaud your optimism and die hard support… but when was the last time we hit 27 on the scoreboard? 12-9 I could buy…defense picks it up for a battle of field position and field goals… 27?…. you are a BEAST!

by toonman on Dec 16, 2009 12:01 PM EST reply actions

IS this the game they let Matt go without restriction?

Outhouse or penthouse?

Either way, what do you have to lose?

by univonc on Dec 16, 2009 12:35 PM EST reply actions

love to see it that way

truly test him out, can you or can you not lead this offense… and please,
let the game plan reflect that we have weapons, and they’re called:
DeAngelo, J-Stew, and Steve Smith…please involve them as much as possible!

that makes way too much sense for this coaching staff

Wednesday prediction: Panthers win Sunday night at BOA Stadium!

21 points

is the magic number it seems.
21 ties us vs Cowboys, and beats the Bills, Jets and Pats.
That would make for a different season to say the least.
(yes I know 21 would have also tied us in the W’s over Bucs and Cards but don’t burst my bubble)

How do we score 21 points per game? Let me see, 4th/32 in rush offense and 28th/32 in pass offense. Let me muse on this a while…………..

Maybe John Fox's karma will revert....

to his days of defensive coordinator for the Giants when they routinely dominated Brad Childress’ offenses. We’re gonna need lots of turnovers.
20-17 Carolina.

As I posted on another post..

I’m trying something new with my predictions this week being I’ve been wrong a majority of the season…

72-0 Minnesota.

Hail Carolina fans from a Viking fan.

I wish you good luck for this match-up and the rest of the season. That being said, I think that this SHOULD be a game we win fairly big. However, whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen. We have dropped games that we probably should’ve won already this season so who knows what will happen. My prediction: 34-10
