Panthers Potential Pathway to the Playoffs

Well, believe it or not the Panthers are still mathematically alive in the race to the playoffs.  Here's what we need to happen for the Panthers to make the playoffs:

Panthers win remaining 3 games and the scenarios below happen:

Dallas (8-5) loses 3 out of remaining three (@NO, @WAS, PHL)

NY Giants (7-6) lose exactly 2 out of remaining three (@WAS, CAR, @MIN)

San Francisco (6-7) loses at least 1 out of remaining three (@PHL, DET, @STL)

Atlanta (6-7) loses at least 1 out of remaining three (@NYJ, BUF, @TB)

Nah

That would all make sense, but Dallas has the tiebreaker over us (they beat us). Unless someone can think of something I’m missing, we’re mathematically eliminated.

Thats why we need the Giants to finish in the 3 way tie at 8-8

Giants would eliminate Dallas within the division tiebreaker.

The most likely part of the scenario is:

the Panthers winning out!

Oppps 'unlikely' part

Ah I gotcha

Looks like we need the Skins to go on a winning streak.

Love the optimism! lol

Dallas: I doubt they lose to Washington
Giants: I doubt they lose to Washington
49ers: They could lose to Philly
Altanta: They could lose the NY Jets

and gotta keep fighting until we take a 10 count.

At this point

We don’t deserve to be a playoff team.

by Tater596 on Dec 15, 2009 4:27 PM EST reply actions

+1, at this point we don't

But this scenario entails us needing to win the next 3 vs. Minnesota, NY Giants and Saints… if we do that then I think we’d be deserving.

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus!

Umm, and maybe a tooth fairy, a leprechaun, and a magic talisman.

Okay, sorry. I really can’t see this happening, not because of the other teams, but because, sorry James, I’m not optimistic concerning our own. If the Panthers win another game this season with Moore at the helm, I’d consider it a success. Beating New Orleans, the Giants, and the Vikings? It’s not happening.

Now, that I’ve stated that, I do remember a San Diego team last year that was 4 back with 4 to go, and not many people had them getting in either. I’ll be happy to eat humble pie if the Cts can do it.

Go Panthers, prove me wrong!

Last season....

the Eagles needed to win 3 out of their last 4 games and have Tampa Bay to lose their last 4 games to get in …and it happened. As an Eagles fan at the time, I will never forget how that felt .
However the Eagles were a healthy team and had a far less formidable schedule than what the Panthers are facing.
Nonetheless: GO PANTHERS!

by paydirt16 on Dec 16, 2009 7:37 AM EST up reply actions

Isn't it time to switch back to the Eagles Paydirt? ;)

They are playing well.

No, sorry Jaxon,

I will not switch back to the Eagles as long as Jeff Lurie & Joe Banner are still running the show (which could mean my lifetime.) You guys are stuck with me now.
GO PANTHERS!!

That was a test!

and you passed!

by Jaxon on Dec 18, 2009 9:01 AM EST up reply actions

wow... looks a lot more possible when you put it that way...

washington has been playing well lately and dallas sucks in Dec…. and the jets could beat the falcons….

then again… we have to win out….

by vitzeng on Dec 15, 2009 6:17 PM EST reply actions

Winning out is going to be the most unlikely thing

never mind what everyone else has to do.

Especially with the news of Otah going down. Our line play was already not good with Gross out.

At this point I just want the season to be over so we can see what steps are taken to make next year’s Super Bowl run ;)

Lord I have been so negative!!!!

but geez what is there to be positive about? The schedule blows and team is playing like crap

or the Cowboys could put us out of our misery

with a win versus New Orleans on Saturday night. (but I hope not).
A Panther win combined with a Cowboy loss keeps us mathematically alive for another week.

Now I'm conflicted...I really want NO to lose

but I guess we could put the first loss on them

Yes.

The girlfriends a Saints fan, but I can’t abide by rooting for them until they lose. That team isn’t good enough to deserve undefeated.

Agree’d though.

I do agree..

We have a back (or two if PFF.com is correct) that can run with their back but we don’t have anyone under center than can compete with who they have under center.

Though I’m still going to be cheering for a Panthers win! I hope they can prove us wrong..

To get the superstition on our side, I’m going to predict:

0-72 Minnesota.

That 72-0 score...

reminds me of the old “Da Bears” skits on SNL where they would say the Bears would win by outrageous amounts … lol.

by bwsmith25 on Dec 16, 2009 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

lol... they were classics...

my favorite was before an NFC title game vs the Giants when they brought up the scenario that the entire Bears team couldn’t play, so Ditka had to face the Giants alone but he was shrunken into a "mini Ditka. " Of course they predicted the “mini Ditka” would crush the Giants. Maybe we could use a “mini Fox” against the Giants next week.

by paydirt16 on Dec 16, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

Frankly, it could bite the dust earlier than that.

If the top teams keep winning, it’ won’t matter what we do. Even with a 3-0 finish, we only have about a 7% chance of making it.

I doubt there is even a slight chance for any playoff hopes...

…and quite frankly I am glad. I don’t think our team is in good enough shape to do any damage in even a Wildcard round. It’s better to begin working and solely focusing on NEXT season and the future of the franchise than having another potentially embarrassing loss in the playoffs.

by SwankTheTank on Dec 16, 2009 3:11 PM EST reply actions

This is the part of the season where that Bills loss haunts us...

I don’t know about you guys, but I keep seeing the Bills, Jets, and Cowboys games over and over and over — haunting me, knowing that if we won 2 out of those 3 we would still be in the realistic playoff hunt.

by bwsmith25 on Dec 16, 2009 5:32 PM EST reply actions

Holy crap.

That is EXACTLY what I’ve been doing for the last couple of weeks. Thinking about those exact games. The Bills game especially….it was unbelievable. I’ve never seen any NFL team play like that. Not in the course of my life. I pretty much lost hope after that one.

by The Kackalack Kid on Dec 17, 2009 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

Plenty of those games this year.

It’s weird, because this is a team that usually does all the little things right and stays in games so they can pull them out at the end. To see them do so poorly in such situations has been a disappointment to say the least.

Yup...I said that right after the loss

that was one we had to have to have a shot at the playoffs. If we were at 6-7 the chances are a little more realistic….but there is still the ‘playing like crap’ part.

All pathways now closed, with Dallas' win last night.

But with N.O. loss, they have little incentive in our last game, and will probably rest all key personnel. If that happens, our having a better chance to finish with a win will be welcome by Fox.

by bigdavis on Dec 20, 2009 8:58 AM EST reply actions

I doubt NO rests, undefeated or not.

Payton said they were going to play it out because he was worried about his team’s lack of postseason experience. A loss doesn’t change that.

I doubt he keeps Brees in though

He is the heart and soul of the team, if he goes down the team goes with him.

So why play him at all?

Injuries are part of the game. The second you let up is the second you get hurt.

I'm a little confused

Do you mean why play him at all in a season or why play him at all these past few games?

I mean why play him at all.

If you’re too scared to play him because he might get hurt, he should never get in the game.
