Can Matt Moore be the Spark?

-Video courtesy of SteveSmithTD89 from Youtube, check out his channel at the following link.

My friends, there are times where that football fans or fans of any sport in the world makes a kneejerk reaction to a tough loss. There are times where we hate on players that have been loyal to franchise for a good long time, just to have them prove to us the next week that they don't deserve it.

Star-divide

However, the only thing in the world that Jake has been consistent at this season has been his inconsistency. While some of us will point the finger at Jeff Davidson at the cause of this debacle, others will say that his confidence is not there, and still others will blame at John Fox, the bottom line is that the Jake Delhomme of 2009 has been nothing like the Jake Delhomme of 2008.  He's been downright horrible, and has been one of the greatest reasons that the Panthers have a losing record.

However, with Jake Delhomme incurring a broken finger during the loss against the Jets, the Panthers will be forced to make a change at QB. This is an important move, and it has already changed the fate of a couple of franchises in the NFL. Here's a couple of examples.
1. Minnesota Vikings

Brett Favre is a beast. Need I say anything more?

Seriously though, the Vikings are 10-1 with 5 games to go. They're going to win their division by a large margin, and they went from being a borderline playoff team to a Super Bowl contender. To make it simple, Brett Favre simply makes everyone around him better. You can't explain how he can retain such a strong arm at 40 years of age. He makes all the throws that he needs to make, even in clutch situations where the game is on the line. Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice have been transformed into legitimate receivers, proving once more that sometimes receivers are only as good as the QB throwing to them.

In essence, last year the Vikings hosted a powerful running game without even a average QB to compliment it. Sound familiar? This year they got a Pro-Bowler, and it's placed them in good position to get to the Super Bowl.

2. Tennessee Titans

How much can you say about the turnaround of this team? For whatever reason, Kerry Collins had a similar backstroke from last year just like our Jake Delhomme. Similar age, similar statistics, it's pretty damn eerie at how closely related the two situations really are. And yet after being replaced by Vince Young after 6 straight losses to start the season, the situation suddenly flipped.

5 wins in a row. Vince Young has completed 83 out of 132 passes for 1,010 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. He's quickly become the leading candidate for the Comeback Player of the Year award, and he's put his team in position to make a late run at the playoffs. If the Titans can pull it off and run the tables, this will possibly go down as the single best decision ever made by a head coach, ever.

For the Panthers, they need to hope and pray that Matt Moore can pull a similar turnaround. We face the Bucs next week with Matt Moore at the helm, a situation that the fans been begging for weeks. We don't need a Pro-Bowler like a Brett Favre, or even a duel threat QB like Vince Young. What the Panthers need is an average QB that can be solid against the blitz and effective enough to stop other teams from stacking 8 and 9 players in the box.

After the Bucs, we face the Patriots, the Vikings, and the Giants in rapid succession. If the Panthers have any chance of making the playoffs, they have to annihilate the Bucs. They have to slaughter them. They need to run the ball down their throat. But in order to eventually win the Super Bowl, we need to do a little more than that. The Panthers need a QB that can be consistent, and all eyes will be on Matt Moore this week to see if he can be that guy.

For the sake of our franchise, I sure hope he is.

I really hope that Moore comes out and has an incredible game against the Buc’s (even if it’s at the expense of Williams & Stewart) – if for nothing else than to make the Pats focus a bit less on the run and some on Moore. I feel like the Buc’s could be a great opportunity, if utilized correctly, to “encourage” the Pats to game plan against pass (of course, I know they aren’t that stupid but showing that Moore can win a game for us through the air would do wonders).

I’ve supported Delhomme up until now and I still feel like it was the correct decision to play him up to this point (Arizona was a matter of respect, he then played well up to the Jets game) – but now it’s time to see what Moore can do.

Saturday could very well mark the beginning of a new era for the Panthers. I can’t wait – I’ll be cheering for Moore just as I have for Delhomme all these years.

I shall now drink from the fountain of kool-aid…

We’re not settling for any less, we want Moore!

By the way, I want alternate uniforms! The set we debuted against Tampa in 02.

You bet we want Moore baby!

Anyone that can fit a ball in double coverage to Keory Colbert has to be pretty special right?

Agreed.

Excellent point on Colbert; needed that laugh : )

It’s was nice to see some highlights of our receivers catching a ball behind the secondary instead of in front of it. I think aerial touchdowns happen that way but it’s been so long I may be mistaken.

I’m pretty concerned about pass protection at this point, but hey, at least we’ll get to see what he’s made of. The Tampa game has to be the best time for him to start comparative to the rest of the schedule and I’ll definitely be glued to the set for this match-up.

I thought the same thing...

Nice link Rev…Moore has made some good throws.

It is time to find out if this kid is a player!

Spot on

This is really the only legit time we could have played Moore.

And if he rips it up, I’ll be as pumped as anyone. Just please don’t take away touches from Williams, #1 seed is on the line in my league. : D

I just hope Panthers fans are realistic this week.

I know I’m (self) designated optimist around here but I think people are hoping that we have the next Tom Brady sitting on our bench.

I’m not saying we don’t and I’m not saying we do, but honestly, the odds are he’s going to have a mediocre to terrible game. It takes time working with the 1st team offense, it takes time to gel.

Those highlights from the 2007 season are impressive, but people need to remember that during that QB carousel each QB was at least getting some reps with the first team thoughout the week in practice. By the time Moore was handed the reigns he’d at least had 6-7 weeks with at least some reps with the first team.

Moore has a good stretch now to show the team and the fans if he can be a starter in this league. Let’s work on seeing if he can effectively run an NFL offense in more than just garbage games, then we can work on seeing if he’s the next Joe Montana.

As it stands now I’m a little worried too many people are putting too much faith in Matt ‘Messiah’ Moore.

I agree

I’m not sold on Moore yet either. to think he will turn our season around is unrealistic. if he was that good delhomme would have been benched long ago. besides his 07 games weren’t that great. However, im not saying we should turn to him either. Jake does need a break for a while to sort things out. This can also be a time to evaluate Moore. Hopefully he will get us a few wins but i dont expect too miuch out of him

by pantherpride on Dec 1, 2009 10:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I share that worry - only opposite... kind of..

I’m worried some fans aren’t being realistic and that Moore is going to shred Tampa’s defense in a phenomenal 09 debut (compared to what we’re used to) bringing Foxhaters out in hordes. They will then expect the same the following week and will be severely disappointed as Moore is brought down to earth and destroyed by the Pats.

I will then fear for the worst – Foxhaters (and, I guess, Delhommehaters? Looks German to me.) will form a cult and commit a mass suicide…… Or is that… No, no, that’s certainly considered a “worst” out come.

It should also be noted that every team he played against had nothing to play for. Seattle had wrapped up their division long ago, ditto Dallas, and Tampa had clinched a playoff berth already and was playing their second stringers.

Sorry to be a Negative-Nancy...

But that was the year that Dallas and Green Bay owned the NFC, and they both had 12 wins at week 16.

Dallas owned the tie-breaker and we played them week 16; lost 20-13. I thought we played them well, considering we had a rookie QB, albeit he did have some experience with Dallas in the offseason.

Would have been nice if he had won that one but I think Dallas was heavily commited to picking up home-field advantage and we had little shot at a W. I’ve been kind of enamored with Moore since however; probably a setup for a let-down.

Agreed on TB and Seattle. Those were garbage games and probably don’t paint a good picture of what Moore can do in a competitive game.

by GuyIncognito on Dec 2, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Seattle finished 10-6 in 2007.

They were 1st in the NFC West with the Arizona Cardinals finishing 2nd with 8-8.

Losing to us had no bearing on their season.

If Fox is right that Moore is worse then Jake we’re in for a long game this weekend. Delhomme is at a defining point in his career either a break will bring him back around or he’ll ride pine until he retires. I’ve been calling for a change after the season, up until last week, but with nothing left to play for it might be time to evaluate the other QBs in game. And that is what Moore will provide the team this week, if he starts, at least one more look to see if he’s the next Tom Brady or another Brady Quinn.

by bleed_in_blue on Dec 2, 2009 12:13 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

To say the teams he played had nothing to play for is ridiculous, they play to win every game. & so what if 1 of the teams had second string players, Moore was like the 5th string qb that year, after Carr, Delhomme, Testaverde, & i think 1 other qb. He started 3 games & won 2, thats a good record. I dont know if he has what it takes but now we will all get to see for ourselves how good he is or isnt. I do agree that he may need a couple of games to connect with the starters but hopefully he has been doing that all along anyway. He certainly cant do any worse than Delhomme , there was a couple of games that all Delhomme did was hand off the ball.

I've actually just seen the highlights.

Did anyone else notice Moore’s feet? Several times he had this stutter in his drop back, plant, and step up. Did anyone besides me see that?

by Flowing Willow on Dec 2, 2009 2:56 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I'd like to see him show more mobility

if he has it to show that is. Is the stutter a problem?

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Dec 2, 2009 8:46 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He was getting fairly good protection

And he showed a little bit of movement, he’s not going to outrun a linebacker, but he can move out of the way.

I’m not sure the stutter is a problem, it’s definitely interesting though. Can someone who is a little more of an expert enlighten us?

by chinchillas sword on Dec 2, 2009 9:07 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Need to watch again...

And can’t at work. But does he just keep his feet moving or is it something else? I’ve noticed that even if Payton Manning is glued in one spot in the pocket he still keeps his feet moving.

I assume that’s so as not to throw flat-footed or to have better leverage to scramble quickly, and that it’s a good thing. Got a buddy that claims they coach that. If he’s doing something else though I’m out of ideas.

by GuyIncognito on Dec 2, 2009 11:12 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Keeping the feet moving is not a bad thing, IMO

Better than standing there flat-footed and immobile. Good mention by Guy about PManning — it allows him to retain his balance for a quick throw to a second or third read. (We could only HOPE that Moore could get to such a progression before the rush gets to him!)

by bigdavis on Dec 2, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

+1

I noticed the shuffling too, and while it may look awkward, as long as he’s getting his feet set for the pass itself then it’s all the same.

I liken it to Philip Rivers’ mechanics. It looks clunky, but if it’s effective what does it matter?

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James The Aussie on Dec 2, 2009 1:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The thing is...

does the shuffling mean that he’s not getting properly set?
Or that he’s always ready to run if his guy isn’t open (aka… not willing to read through progressions)?
Or that he has no faith in the OL?

I'm actually pretty impressed.

I thought for sure that John Fox would bring AJ Feeley ahead of Matt Moore on the depth chart, simply because he is a nfl veteran.

Yeah, I need to watch it again

Very interesting mechanic, and it really isn’t so much of a shuffle as it is a stutter, kind of stamping each foot. He doesn’t look very comfortable.

If he fails miserably this weekend, I can hear Fox saying… I told you so.

Matt the spark>>>>UH YEAH!

Ok so while everyone on here has a valid point on both sides. All I wanted to do is come in here and say H E double toothpicks yes, Matt Moore starting is the best thing…At this point the fans are just well let’s face it ticked off. This should have happened weeks or months ago. Sorry Jake! If Matt reads this (which I am sure he won’t, to busy practicing) Matt take you time, show your team you have what it takes and we will see you next game, next game, next game, and so on. No pressure. Even if you throw a INT, I am good with that. I am just so sick of watching week after week of up and down playing I could toss my cookies. The panthers are so much better than that. From Williams, to Stewart, to Peppers, to MOOOOOSSSEE, to Beason (well) on the field that is. Smith, uh I could go on with the rest….Let’s give Matt the support he needs for this game. Who knows what might come of it. Oh and by the way I think Jake should be sitting on the bench in his day clothes with a bag on his head, no wait that doesn’t sound humane, I mean human. Just some ice on his finger…Oh wait I know, sitting there with one of his expressions after he THREW YET ANOTHER INTERCEPTION!!!!
Thank you and good day
