Panthers Await News of LB Davis Injury - Update: Torn ACL
Update via Twitter from Darin Gantt: Torn right ACL for #Panthers LB Thomas Davis. Out for the season
Fox offered no update on Thomas Davis (knee), but did say: "I feel bad for him and his family." Doesn't sound good.
I'm not going to say it but we should be braced for the worst Panther fans. The turf has claimed many injuries in the same fashion.

A horrible injury in a contract year.... I hope it's not season ending.
Hopefully it wont cast a serious shadow on his future, but it’s always tough to know what a team should do with a player (no matter how good) who gets a serious injury in a contract year.

A sorta contract year.
Remember, he’s an RFA if there’s no CBA extension. Darin Gantt also noted that Rucker was at 100% for opening day following a Week 16 ACL tear in his 30s. No reason to think he won’t come back.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Double sad for me if he's out for the year.
I have him in fantasy.

Injury prone, I mean, the injury bug, I mean, bad luck strikes again.

Is it possible to be "prone" to tearing your knee up?
Does he run in a bad way? Does our strength and conditioning staff not focus enough on strengthening ligaments?

Oh, come on, I thought bad luck was in agreement? hahah
But no, once again, I was referring to Carolina as a team. In that case, yes, Carolina has been “prone” to having players go down this year, as tends to happen often.
However, I called it bad luck just for you, MP! Hahaha

Its probably going to be Landon Johnson
though I would prefer James Anderson me thinks

Agreed
To me it should be either Connor or Anderson that should get the start in Davis’s place.

Don't forget, though...
Johnson has often been a good player in the past. He led the Bengals in tackles for three different seasons, and he had a 10-tackle game against Buffalo when Davis was down with a hammy.

Yes...he should be able to fill in with no drop off but...
the Panthers haven’t shown a lot of confidence in him. Now we will find out

looks like we're headed for 6-10
No way we make the playoffs without Davis.

This is horrible news.
Poor guy… he was on his way to the Pro Bowl this year.

Oh brother, what a tough break for a guy having a Pro Bowl season in a contract year.
by paydirt16 on Nov 9, 2009 3:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I know
And the guy was just coming into his own, putting up big numbers.

I knew it as soon as it happened.

Yeppers
Tore my right ACL playing football and can relate. If he has surgery now he hopefully will be ready for next year. It use to take a year for recovery but I believe has been reduced to less time now. Good luck TD!

This really, really sucks.
Best of luck to TD, and hopefully the rest of the team can avoid too much of a fall-off with him out.
This really, really sucks.

Sooo...
Did anyone else have the reaction of, “F**CKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!” when they read that?
by boywonderncsu on Nov 9, 2009 3:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Not quite...
I knew it was really bad when it happened… it was unfortunately what I expected.

No t really
I had mine right after it happened…I could just tell by the way he fell, his reaction and the look on his face as they were carting him away. Freakin astroturf claims another knee…I still think the shit should be outlawed

+1000
It’s obscene that with all the ticky tac BS rules in the NFL they fail to do anything about somethign that continually injured players.

By the way…. what does “actions” do? I’m scared to click it.

It isn't astro turf
AstroTurf was removed from the Superdome in 2003, replaced with Field Turf, and now has Momentum Turf.
I understand you’re getting at (artificial turf), but AstroTurf had a worse reputation for injuries (and diseases) than what came later.
I haven’t looked at the plays before it happened, so I can’t really say what the cause of the injury was.

Yeah...I'm sure its evolved but in the end its still less than desireable

They'd tell you otherwise
The surface is said to be safer and more consistent then natural grass, but offers the traction and bounce of a grass field.

Clicking 'Actions' presents more options depending on your site role
for you it probably just says ‘Rec’ or ‘Flag’. Rec means to recommend the comment and flag means it violates the Code of Conduct. I try to review all the flags weekly and respond accordingly.

That’s horrible..
I feel as though the season has ended. We had a beast and a monster, now our monster is gone and the beast cannot do it by himself.
Someone need step up… but at this point I’m looking for back ups to get experience.. The more we win, the lower pick we get…
Back-to-back winning seasons will elude us once again… and once again, I will say “next year, next year the Panthers will win the SuperBowl!” as all look at me as if I escaped an insane asylum.

I'm still going to watch the remaining games
But man was Davis the backbone of the defense this year. Atleast we still have the heart still in there battling with Jon Beason.

Absolutely!
All of the bad or terrible seasons are what makes a winning season worth everything.

L. Johnson gets the start.
Landon Johnson gets the nod in the game over Dan Conner b/c of experience I guess and the fact that even though he restructured his contract at-least the Panthers get to see what they have in him. T. Davis cannot be replaced and this is just another injury in a bad season for us that is getting worse with every game.
Man what next honestly ? He was going to make the Pro Bowl this year for sure and was second on the team in tackles with 69. Damn turf in New Orleans, should be made to get some kind of composite grass surface like what Arizona has.
But these things happy and we cannot blame the Saints for anything, just stinks but all is not lost I just hope we beat the Falcons b/c we let them off the hook in the first game we played against them.
Go Cats.

Hard to grow grass inside.
Arizona has the capacity to move their whole field out into the sun. New Orleans certainly does not.

I've been debating whether to ask the fanbase this or not, but I'm going to do it.
If you’re Marty Hurney what do you do with Thomas Davis in the offseason?
Do you still try and work a big extension or franchise him sight unseen?

I’d go for an ext… if he doesn’t want it.. franchise… if we fair well without him, perhaps see what kind of trade offers we can get, out of curiosity… it would take A LOT, in my opinion, for a trade like that to go down.
by D-Ranged1 on Nov 9, 2009 11:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Tough call...definitely make a fair offer
franchise though it tough…need to see how surgery goes. They still have time…about 2 months before making a decision

I thought about it more.
Most fair thing to do is sign him to an extension that is low in guaranteed money and high in incentive based dollars. i.e. a performance bonus if be plays over 85% of snaps.

You tender him with a first and third round offer and see what kind of offer sheet he gets.
Nobody will be willing to pay big money and give up those picks, so you’ll have another year to work with him.
