Ask The Falcoholic Part Two: The Askening

Heck of a game against the Saints, guys. I was really hoping you'd win.

Coming this weekend is a game I really hope you don't win, of course, but you've turned your season around in a big way. I'm anticipating a tough game.

But of course, that's not why I'm here, to make you guys feel good about yourselves. I'm here to answer your questions about the Falcons. You wanna know about Matt Ryan? You sez you gotta know about Michael Turner? Okays then.

Please remember to recommend this post so it will stay near the top for anyone who wants to ask questions this week. Fire away!

Are the Falcons prepared to take full advantage of Davidson being incapable of calling a whole game without turning into a moron?

Ok, that’s not a fair question.

DeAngelo Williams vs Michael Turner; who has the better day?

It could be scorn still residing within me from todays game but at this moment I’m leaning towards Turner. Giving the ball to Williams when he’s having a good day only seems like a good idea to Jeff when the game isn’t on the line. If the game is on the line, Davidson would much rather throw the game away through the air.

I think they both have good days

Turner is on fire right now, so I’ll lean toward him, though Williams is having a fantastic season.

Depends how they use Williams....

Our defense is fast and is starting to show a knack to over pursuit. Draws have been killing us. I think Turner has a big day too. That CAR defense is just having a bad year injury wise…

How's your D-line?

Abraham loves keeping Jake on the ground but do you have anyone else good?

by chinchillas sword on Nov 9, 2009 6:05 AM EST reply actions

Abraham's actually been shaky

But Kroy Biermann has piled up four sacks this season and gets good pressure, and defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux just sacked Jason Campbell 2.5 times this week. We’ve got a couple of options.

Speaking of Abraham...

It has been a while since I have seen a Carolina/Atlanta game (without cable all last season) but I seem to remember Abraham always showing up in a big way against Carolina. So much in fact he is the only defensive player in ATL that I know of by name, because I really dislike him as an opposing player. He has been very disruptive for us.

Can we expect Ryan to keep turning the ball over?

From what I’ve heard he’s in a little bit of a slump.

by Flowing Willow on Nov 9, 2009 6:49 AM EST reply actions

I think so

The way he’s playing right—which I do believe is just a little slump—he’s not making sharp throws like he usually does. Against you guys, that’s a recipe for trouble, and I’d expect a pick.

So Dave, do YOU think the Saints are for real?

You guys didn’t do any better against them but I’m still feeling like if our secondary had not gambled so much we might have had a better chance.

I think so

We both came close to beating them, and I don’t think an undefeated season is ultimately in the cards for the Saints. Still, they’re almost a lock to win the division this year and I suspect they won’t be one-and-done in the playoffs.

I think it’ll be an NFC South team that finally puts the 1 in the L column.

I hope its you guys

but if not they come to Charlotte to end the season. Tough choice on their part if they are 15-0 but have home field locked up. Play for 16-0 and risk injury or sit the key starters and miss the 3rd ever undefeated season. Both choices present peril

NO goes for 16-0.

As has been said, they’re new to success.. I think they want 16-0.. And there’s no guarantee in the play-offs either.. They could go 15-1, lose in the PO’s, and be with nothing but a play-off appearance.

Which, either is more than we’re going to end up with, so bravo to them.

Do you guys have a hard time against one dimensional offenses?

And do you struggle against QBs that lead the league in INTs? Because if you do, you have no chance to win this week!

Falcons Passing Attack Ranked 19th

Dave, given you’ve added a huge weapon in TE Tony Gonzales are you disappointed the passing the game is not performing at a higher level?

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Nov 11, 2009 9:30 AM EST reply actions

I'd be lying if I said no

I figured the pass would allow us to back off the run a bit and really carry the team this year, and that hasn’t happened to the extent I thought it would. A lot of that falls on Ryan’s shoulders at the moment, but it’s also increasingly obvious that we have Gonzo, Roddy White and not much else. We really miss Harry Douglas, who is out for the season.

Falcons Rushing Defense ranked 24th and Passing Defense is ranked 27th

That has to be a concern in the 2nd half. Which phase concerns you the most?

It's the cumulative effect, I think

I would say Harry Douglas, though.

Sure could be

Peria Jerry and William Moore, though they’re both out for the year, could make things happen down the line. Ditto Lawrence Sidbury, a potentially elite pass rusher who is still learning on the job.

Lets go with the stupid question...

Although highly unlikely (and I certainly hope not), if Williams’ knee ends up preventing him from being, well, DeAngelo Williams, and Stewart can’t shake whatever was wrong with him last week……

At what point does Atlanta put some back-ups in? Or do they simply slaughter our no-dimensional team until the clock runs out?

I hope he sat out of practice strictly as a precaution.

I doubt that'll happen

Both your backs are dangerous, and even a limited D-Will could do a lot of damage. I’m not willing to jinx myself.

ATL's rush defense is 24th!

I don’t see Stewart struggling against them. If they decide to stack the box like everyone else has, I really hope Fox let’s Jake heave some down field. Their struggling pass defense is exactly what the Dr ordered.

by southtunnel on Nov 12, 2009 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

You know, it's funny

Everyone refers to our struggling pass defense, but our pass defense is actually arguably getting better. We’re always going to allow a ton of yards, but the picks and pass deflections have been coming and we’ve been limiting scoring to some degree.

Not that we’re that great, still.

Playbook on NFLN complimented your pass D this week

And then all 3 announcers picked the you guys over the Panthers. But I figure, since 2 of them picked the Panthers last week, and they all picked Arizona the week before, their lousy ability to pick games means the Panthers will surely win Sunday.

so DeAngelo is officially “questionable”. Boy that makes me worry! Not only for the Panthers but my fantasy team that relies on Williams and Benson every week with no backups!

I hope Stewart is ready. If Williams isn’t up to play, I wonder who Stewart splits carries with? Sutton showed well for what his was given last week and Goodson hasn’t seen much luck coming out of the backfield.. Perhaps this is the week we find out if we have a diamond in the rough or not?
