Jeff Davidson -- epic fail

Thanks for blowing it, Jeff.

Sometimes, I just don't understand what goes through Jeff Davidson's mind. He has to be the dumbest offensive play-caller in the league. There is no reason to believe that he knows what he is doing -- he is just sitting there with his play sheet, calling the most asinine plays he can possibly come up with.

Obviously he isn't watching the same game that everyone else is watching, because his play-calls show that either (a) he has no idea how to run an offense, or (b) he thinks he's playing Madden 10 instead of coaching a real football game.

Case in point. The Panthers are down 23-20 with 4:36 to go in the 4th quarter and have the ball on the Saints' 43 yard line. They have 1st and 10 with 2 timeouts left. They have two of the best running backs in the league (one who already had 100+ rushing yards and 2 TDs). The logical thing would be to run the ball, take some time off the clock, and move into FG range or get a touchdown. That would be the logical thing to do. But, what does Davidson call? THREE STRAIGHT PASSING PLAYS?!? WTF IS THAT?!?

Below is a breakdown of Davidson's ineptitude. (The ball is on the NO 43)

1st & 10 -- Jonathan Stewart 2 yd run.
2nd & 8  -- deep pass incomplete to Steve Smith
3rd & 8  -- deep pass incomplete to Dwayne Jarrett
4th & 8 -- Delhomme sacked & fumbles (recovered by Saints -- which is irrelevant)

Okay, someone please explain to me why the Panthers have to take three shots downfield in this situation. They have a dynamite running game. Why don't they just run the ball three times? Certainly they can get 8 yards in three attempts, can't they? And, if they run the ball twice and are stuffed -- then I can understand throwing it on 4th & 8. But, throwing deep downfield on 2nd (and 3rd) & 8 is inconceivable to me.

Hopefully John Fox will see that Davidson's inability to make a decent call on offense is costing this team winnable games, and hopefully Davidson will be relieved of his duties as soon as the plane lands in Charlotte tonight.

But of course Davidson won't be fired. He will be right back on the sidelines next week, leading the Panthers to yet another loss in a winnable game because he can't figure out that throwing the ball 30+ times a game is a bad idea.

Enjoy this loss, Jeff -- because this one's on you.

I’m so glad that I am not the only one that believes Jeff is a moron.

I could hear him in an interview now…

“My momma always said, ‘Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.’”

Quit eating the chocolates, Jeff! We don’t like this “you never know what you’re gonna get” stuff!

In fact, Mrs. Gump said...

“You have to do the best with what God gave you”

Apparently brains isn’t what God gave Davidson but he’s sure trying… something.

I can see Big Cat talking to Fox …

LOL!

Forrest also said..

“Mama always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them.”

Can we please find someone like Mrs. Gump to explain things to Jeff?

Dubious play calling has been a problem here long before Davidson came here. If it’s actually his fault, I’ll be very surprised.

I have to agree

why not another screen that worked so well when they were run blitzing…anything but deep passes. Just dumb. The perfect amount of time to grind it down the gola line and take a shot for the win or kick the tying FG. Just dumb…

Execution = success = good play calling

There seems to be an equal amount of criticism of the play calling by the OC, between being “too conservative” and throwing too often.

But it really boils down to the players making the plays, doesn’t it? We had become so one-dimensional, with our conservative pass-averse first half, that the Saints stacked the box with 8 and even 9 men — so they were daring us to pass. And with Hoover out, it’s no sure thing that a run will result in our “average” yardage. So in the example you cited, after the 1st down run only gains 2, a pass isn’t some bizarre call. Maybe a pass in the flat, or a crossing pattern, would’ve worked, and kept the series going, but maybe not — had the receiver caught the deeper throw, we’d all be hailing Davidson as a genius, and breaking the mold of conservatism we all hate — but the receiver didn’t catch it. Good execution makes heroes of us all.

IMO, it’s no more Davidson’s fault that Jarrett can’t bring in the pass that would’ve established him as a potentially elite NFL receiver — than it is Meeks’ fault that Richard Marshall was a deer in the headlights when Brees threw twice to the receivers he should’ve been covering.

I have no major problem with throwing...

But throwing deep twice in a row? It’s the wrong time to start taking shots downfield.

And, I wouldn’t hail Gump as a genius, I would call it what it would have been — luck.

I understand what you are saying, and I agree, however it was not the time nor the place to run the plays that he chose. If someone would have told me such would be called before it happened, I’d tell them they were crazy. Even if the pass was completed, there would have been way too much time remaining to allow New Orleans a come back score. He went from managing the clock well in Panthers territory to lunatic once he hit Saints territory. Delhomme had a decent game (no interceptions) but Williams was having a great game, and there’s no doubt in my mind that between running the ball, screens, and the short passes Delhomme had been completing throughout the day, we would have repeatedly netted 10 yards within 4 attempts.

Williams carry average was skewed at the start of the game, thus removing 66 yards and 1 carry still results in a 4+ yards per carry average… Stacked box or no, I trust in Williams to get at least 2.5yards per carry (average) to move the chains, versus Delhomme completing a deep ball in few attempts.

I personally consider it the worst effort I’ve ever seen from him given how important this game was, and I’ve no plans of reconsidering my dislike for him. I think he needs to go, plain and simple. If he comes back and calls a perfect game from here out, he still needs to go. I cannot look past his incompetence this time. There are many offensive coordinators out there that would have at least given us a chance to win that game yesterday, especially with the talent he had at his disposal.

Davidson isn't a OC!!!

He’s more of a line coach! And he sees that his running game is better then his passing game so stick with the running game, god damn it! And cut it out with these short out passes to smith, who even he said during the game to the sideline to “STOP CALLING THESE FUCKING PLAYS”…… it’s getting ridiculous, smith is being ineffective to a point where I sometimes forget he is STEVE SMITH!!!! not the Giants steve smith but the one and only STEVE “I make plays” SMITH!!!

And get Jarrett hands practice all this week. He missed a perfectly thrown ball that any receiver his height or any receiver playing in the NFL should catch.

The stuff with Jarrett is nothing new.

He’s been a disappointment his whole career.

Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Has anyone considered...

Davidson is just an extension of Fox? Have you ever noticed how Fox is always fumbling with his headset throughout the game? Fox is ultimately responsible for the team and has input on the play calling. It is tough to run a complete offense when the QB cannot consistently throw accurate passes over 5 yards!

Mr. Screen Play rarely runs the screen

though it worked well the one time they ran it in the first half. I bet it would have worked int he 2nd half when they started blitzing like hell. Though we rag them about run draw plays it can be very effective when called at the right time. I think screens and draws should be in the Panthers game plan every week wince they slow down the pass rush and are not risky plays, it just depends on how much you run them.

Like the ones that hit Smith, Jarrett, and Williams in the hands?

Again, what’s he supposed to do? Wedge it in their facemask opening?

Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

Yes!

He should throw it right in that opening! That’s why it’s there, to catch the ball when the targeted player cannot!

Obviously we need new face masks because our current ones are not doing their job.

Haha! That’s the funniest thing I’ve read today.
