John Kasay injured?
According to the Panthers injury report, John Kasay did not practice Thursday due to an injured groin. Hopefully it's minor and he is just resting it. We'll see Friday if he practices or sits out again.
If Kasay is unable to play this weekend, that raises questions of Rhys Lloyd. Being he has never attempted an in-game field goal or extra point as a Panther, just how accurate would he be filling in for Kasay? Also, Lloyd himself has been 'Questionable' for the past two weeks, will he be 100% if he must start for Kasay?
Again, hopefully Kasay is simply sitting out as a precautionary measure to rest his groin. In a game that is predicted to be so close, a missed field goal or two could be all that separates winner from loser.

Lloyd was a decent kicker in college.
It’s obviously different, but he was 14-18 his senior year at Minnesota and was a JuCo All-American in both of his first two years. In ‘03, he won a bowl game for Minnesota with a 42-yarder. In ’06, he tied an NFL Europe record with a 56-yarder, and he’s also hit a 55-yarder in preseason action for the Ravens. In short, while I wouldn’t necessarily trust him with the game on the line, he’s got talent, and he probably won’t lose a game for us by missing 30-yarders or anything like that.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

I've wondered why we haven't brought him in to kick some 50+ yarders
Kasay’s leg obviously isn’t the same, and what would we lose by having Lloyd attempt it at least. We’d know what we have when Kasay decides to take his place in the hall of honor.

Because...
…from 50 yards out, John Kasay is one of the most accurate kickers in the league. Lloyd has the distance, but not the accuracy from that range.

Once you hit about 52 yards
just go for it on 4th down!

You've still got to get it there.

Field position
Sometimes has to do with field position. If its not the last play of a game/half, then if the FG is missed it gives the opp great field position.

on the other hand
what if Lloyd does great, Kasay is among the elite kickers in the NFL, has the locker room intangibles that many coaches can only dream about, and is a fan (and personal) favorite player. However there is no lack of questioning the move to hold two roster spots for kickers and Lloyd was brought in to keep an aging Kasay fresh.
So what happens if Lloyd is as accurate under game pressure (panthers.com has him kicking or “blasting” field goals from 70 yards out) as Kasay? I love Kasay, and can’t imagine the panthers without him, but I wonder……

I think Kasay keeps the starting job until he decides to retire. However, key situations might see Kasay give way to Lloyd (such as, longer than average field goals near the end of the game when punting isn’t an option to win) if he is accurate.
