Beason Arrested

Beason arrested, capping a wonderful day here Posted by Darin at 11/30/2009 5:09 PM EST

CHARLOTTE — Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason was arrested Monday afternoon on assault charges, stemming from a Nov. 15 incident in a Charlotte strip club.

Beason has been under investigation for more than a week, but wasn’t taken in until Monday afternoon. He wasn’t jailed, and was released on a written promise to appear in court.

Beason was charged with a misdemeanor account of assault inflicting serious injury — aggressive physical force.

The incident occured after the Panthers win over the Atlanta Falcons.

“We were aware of the police department looking into the incident and have addressed it with Jon," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement released by the team. "At this time there appear to be two different versions of what happened.”

Star-divide

Found this in Gantts blog. First thing that came to mind was what more can go wrong? This is a guy I respect and admire and is the last person I'd expect this from. But people make mistakes more often than not. I dont think this will be enough for a suspension but one can never know what the league or the team will do about it.

Man I hope this is some wrongful persecution, I was under the impression Beason was an upstanding guy and one of the reason’s I like the panthers so is because we don’t have a team of felons. I mean, we aren’t the Bengals.

Felon is such a strong word. I know a “felon” that is a “felon” because they got gas at a convenience store one night, went home, and went to sleep.

4 AM – Police come knockin’ and claim that, because they were there around a specific time, they must’ve been connected to something that had happened.

Judge decides to set an example, felon of 5 years now for gettin’ gas.

We’re only as guilty as they feel like making us.

Jon Beason, strip club, and misdemeanor assault.

I'm more than a little disappointed, but I'll reserve judgement untl more comes out.

Beason is one of the upstanding Panthers and the defensive leader. It’s a shame to see him get in any kind of trouble.

I'll reserve judgement until after the trial

Jon Beason has already stated that he will plead “Not Guilty.”

This may be another attempt to extort money out of an innocent man for all we know.

Let's not rush to judgment

1) Beason adamantly denies he hit anybody

2) the accuser has a bad rep: bad check passing, female abuse, pretending to be a Panther

3) this happened 2 weeks ago, supposedly, and the police hadn’t even concluded their investigation

4) Beason has no record, and is involved in the community in charitable contributions — he’s a single, 24 year-old celebrating a victory — maybe a strip club’s not the best choice, but have any of you been a 24 year-old millionaire wanting to celebrate a rare victory?

5) it’s a misdemeanor charge, not a felony — big difference

The fact that the victory is rare

Means there is not much to celebrate

At 4-7 half empty is being generous

t’s either 1/3 full or 2/3 empty. I know I’m the pessimist on this, but a sorry team, celebrating a measly win is pathetic.

A win against the Falcons was not measly, and at that point it seemed as if we could possibly turn this season around at 4-5. Even if they got one win the whole season I would expect them to celebrate afterwards.

strip clubs and suspensions

i think it is pretty absurd to judge him for going to a strip club. going to a strip club is in no way immoral. some people are against it, but he has the right to go wherever he wants. that doesn’t make it a smart decision, but he is allowed to go, and no one should judge, as if anyone has proven more righteous on this blog. however, righteous or not, it seems to me that superstars in the clubs are targets. maybe this incident is not an example of that, and maybe beason was perfectly within his rights to go, but it still is not a smart decision. not only that, but regardless of the eventual outcome, does this mean he will definitely get suspended? i mean if he pleads guilty and gets probation and community service over the summer, he could still miss the last month of the season or the first month of next year. just because you have the right to do something doesn’t mean you should.

Ok, Now I wasn’t there, but some people that are in my social circle were. This is what I was told. Greg told Jon Beason’s girlfriend or whatever she is that he saw Beason and another panther player(not mentioned in the media so I won’t mention his name either, but I know who it is) do a certain white powdery substance at a party the weekend before. She went back and told them, and then the alleged incident happened. According to him, they jumped him and busted him up. and here we are. This is not a friend of mine. I just know him from school and mutual friends.

by Hanrahanfan on Dec 1, 2009 10:01 AM EST reply actions

Funny thing

Your story sounds similar to a what someone posted on the Charlotte Observer blog about the artcle that did mention another name but it was that the other player was doing this in the bathroom and this guy accused Beason. Sounds like you and your friends need to get together and get your stories straight before you go out posting them in online blogs.

by Lawboy987 on Dec 1, 2009 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

Look he prefaced with "I wasn't there"

It’s up to the authorities to see if it was legal or not.

Even if it doesn’t add up, Jon needs to make sure that he doesn’t put himself in those situations.

If he is putting some “white powdery substance” up his nose, then he needs help ASAP. Once it affects those neurotransmitters, then it becomes physically and psychologically harder to stop.

by univonc on Dec 1, 2009 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

I would be less surprised about the white substance

When I was in my early 20’s everybody was experimenting with drugs. The smarter guys stayed away from the heavier stuff… but it was very common. Especially if you had money! And most of us still went to school, worked jobs and stayed out of trouble.

But for him to jump the guy sounds because of a mere accusation, that just sounds stupid. Beason is smart enough to know that he’ll get in serious trouble for that.

I agree, and I am no purist

However, with money, celebrity, and everyone wanting to be your “friend”, the temptation and distractions become harder to overcome.

That is why the NFL has a rookie seminar on how to be a professional player, which addresses the distractions of sex, drugs, violence, and external pressures.

The players have been “stroked” since they have been discovered to have talent. This is an investment for all involved. Money is the ultimate outcome, but for us we pay for the entertainment and the thrill to associate with a winner.

Great example is Vince Young. His ego was crushed with his initial play in the NFL. Forutnately for him, he was protected with Kerry Collins who allowed vince to mature, and understand the true nature of the sport. He is a totally different player. He is hungry and mature. He will make it.

I guess my point is not to condemn Jon. Yet if any shread of this is true, this may be the best thing to happen to him to right a ship that may have been destined to sail off course.

In an environment that has as much testing as the NFL I would imagine people would experiment with things that get out of the system quickly.

That being said I don’t put any stock in it. He hasn’t had any history of it that I’m aware of and until / if it’s proven it’s a rumor that will do more harm than good.

But I can say that when I was a younger man in an environment with lots of play money (did a tour in the Navy, free room and board, etc…) I ended up in strip clubs more than I care to admit. Didn’t really care for it; too much money for nothing. But it’s practically inevitable.

He’ll have his due process and hopefully will be cleared. I don’t really believe he’s a loose cannon doing bl*w and punching up strip joints and I will continue to put my faith in the character of the team, if not it’s playcalling ability…

:-(

by GuyIncognito on Dec 1, 2009 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

That's not what I heard...

The story that I heard is the guy that Beason allegedly punched had been spouting racial slurs at him and another Panther player for two hours.

Not to mention, the guy contacted every television station with the story days before going to the police. The whole story will come out, but this is fishy from the start. Besides, if the players are using a certain white powder, they’re going to be in trouble with the league. They get tested for that stuff.

by Scrantsj on Dec 1, 2009 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

This all sounds like so much crap

What I read is that the police have been investigating this for 2 weeks, and have come up with nothing…the guy got some magistrate (unidentified) to sign off on an arrest warrant, when the police hadn’t decided to — they (CMPD) have done extensive interviews and examined the club’s camera surveillance — if Beason had punched the guy out in the club, as alleged, his atty would not be letting him make a public denial — too easy to contradict with evidence.

The talk about blow is just third hand rumors (“I know a guy who knows a guy…”) — this story has been around, and I applaud the local media with not running with it when the accuser shopped it almost 2 weeks ago — and even today the Observer made scarce mention of it in Section B.

Plus I doubt (tho I’ve not used the stuff) that you could be into coke and make 17 tackles in one game. Any users (current or former) here care to contradict that?

because Meeks tells him that the QB/RB have his blow and it’s up to him to take it back from them.

J/K — I don’t think Beason is guilty of anything, especially not cocaine use.

I can contradict the notion that...

…and NFL player who’s coked up can still make 17 tackles in a game.

Exhibit A: Lawrence Taylor

As to whether or not Jon Beason is doing something like that, I have no idea. And there’s no need to speculate. If there’s a story that sticks, it’ll come out soon enough.

Regardless, bad move to be out at a strip club, period. Forget about the other stuff. If Jon wants to celebrate, he’s got plenty of other options available. If his teammates talked him into going along with them, he’s hanging out with the wrong teammates.

But that’s just my two-cents,

Hearing scheduled for January 11

May be a countersuit for defamation — the stuff about the coke wasn’t an allegation that Beason was using at the Cabaret, but that Frye talked about seeing him use at the Lake. This is vehemently denied, and would be the basis for the countersuit.
