Interesting....

…does this mean Jake’s gonna get benched?

by The Duke Dude on Nov 30, 2009 4:03 PM EST reply actions

Thank god or it took an act of God that is.

It took an act of God to finally make coach John Fox bench Jake Delhomme; really I am excited about this and not b/c all this does is give Fox an outlet to bench Delhomme and not take any criticism for doing so.

Cowher or Shanahan you pick the next Carolina head coach. Meeks is the only coach on the staff that is any good. I mean you cannot agrue that b/c Meeks has lost a couple of key guys to season ending injuries and other to nagging injuries and yet the defense still plays good enough to win each and every game.

Could Ron Meeks be the next head coach, hmmm rumor was when he was first brought here it was expected that he would eventually get the job. I don’t care who it is as long as Fox, Hurney, and Davidson are gone.

Matt Moore this is your shot so what are you going to do with it.

Hurney doesn't deserve to get fired

You could argue for Fox … you can’t argue to save Gump’s job, but Hurney should stay.

by BW Smith on Nov 30, 2009 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

I'd like to hear your reasons for firing Fox but not Hurney

They really are a pair that is tied together IMO. Fire both or none.

For what it’s worth, I fall under the none category.

#1 for none, please.

Double Trouble; we've got the best running backs in the NFL that never see the ball!

None

Among the least of the reasons is we can’t afford to eat Fox’s five million in salary.

by Flowing Willow on Dec 1, 2009 2:40 AM EST up reply actions

Good point

I didn’t consider that (mainly because I haven’t really considered firing him myself) but that appears to be a big hurdle that deserves alot of consideration. Factor in the type of money it would take to get a big name guy too (Vic Carucci and others are speculating it would take $50 mil over 5 yrs to get shanahan……lol).

by R-F on Dec 1, 2009 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

I don't believe either should be fired, honestly

I just don’t like the logic of firing the GM because you fired the coach. I don’t really have a “reason” other than completely rebuilding the coaching staff and front office are not a good idea for this team.

Hurney is responsible for us having Double Trouble, Beason, etc.

I know you could argue that he is also responsible for Peppers’ contract and our current cap issues — but I don’t think that’s enough to fire him. If we have a QB who doesn’t turn the ball over every time he touches it, we’re 8-3 (or better) right now and not having this conversation.

I do believe that Gump should be fired though — he has proven he can’t call an offensive game plan for crap — so he’s got to go. Maybe we could bring in Weis now that he’s unemployed — he’s a good offensive coordinator, and would definitely be an upgrade.

by BW Smith on Dec 1, 2009 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

Fair enough

I guess it all boils down to how you think this team was assembled and who had what input. IMO, I think Fox and Hurney share the blame/credit for this team. Hurney’s drafting and player acqusitions (good and bad) were shaped by the way Fox wanted his team to be. They both shared alot of the same traits in how they wanted to go about rebuilding the team, and for the most part they were pretty successful.

You can blame Fox for not benching Delhomme but the reality was that both Fox/Hurney are responsible for the QB issues this team has. For what it’s worth, I think that given the chance they will solve this QB problem in the offseason. Nothing they could do about it this year though.

I definitely don’t want Weis – at least as HC. I think he can be a great OC in the league (which is where I think he will be hired) but I would feel way too uneasy with him as the main guy.

by R-F on Dec 1, 2009 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

I’d love him as an OC though.

by Flowing Willow on Dec 2, 2009 2:47 AM EST up reply actions

So our choices are

Option 1: A guy who took 14 years to win the big one and had a 5-6 playoff record in his first 8 years with his team (and he took over a much better team) compared to Fox’s 5-3 (after taking over a 1-15 team).

Option 2: A guy who won the big one twice with a HOF QB who was already on the roster when he got there; who then proceeded to win 1 playoff game in 10 years after the HOF QB retired.

Sweet. But in all seriousness, if we do end up firing Fox, we better get someone with head coaching experience. No first-time guys for this team please.

by R-F on Nov 30, 2009 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

+1

I know people want Fox’s head, but you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. Not every team gets a Josh McDaniels to make their team overplay their talent level.

McDaniels = overrated

sure, they started hot (with a ton of luck that first week), but they’ve fallen off of a cliff since. Denver does have talent though…

Good point...

…about the possible head coaches out there. Anyone know what Fox’s playoff record is? I’m guessing it’s still not as good as Cowher.

by The Duke Dude on Nov 30, 2009 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

I mentioned it in my post

Fox’s playoff record is 5-3. Three appearances

-Super Bowl loss (3-1)
-NFC Champ Loss (2-1)
-Second Round Loss (0-1)

When comparing him to Cowher, I chose to look at their first 8 years (Fox has only been here 8) and like I said above, Fox is 5-3 while Cowher is 5-6. Cowher had three more appearances and three more first round losses.

by R-F on Nov 30, 2009 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

Edit

Sorry, most of that info is correct. The records are correct (5-3 vs. 5-6) but Cowher did not have three more first round losses. That is not correct. Sorry guys.

by R-F on Nov 30, 2009 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

The problem is...

all the guys with experience either won’t come in for a rebuilding job (which this really might turn into) or suck (which is why they have no job).

I wouldn’t mind a new guy as long as they don’t come from the Pats (Weis, Crennel, Mangini, McDaniels, etc… WTF?). I wouldn’t mind Meeks, but if he’s going, a HC that used to be a DC would be preferred, IMO.

Cowher would probably want to institute a 3-4… which we’re not very well built for.
And Shanahan…
Eh… You nailed it on both of them.

I really don’t think needing a consistent QB is going to turn us back to “rebuilding mode” – but anything can happen in the NFL.

If (large IF) Cowher were to coach here.. he best not touch Meeks’ system, damnit! Not after the way it has worked so far this season :) – and I was a huge skeptic.

Yeah, but

if we end up with a rookie QB to start next season or the season, chances are there’ll be some growing pains that a vet coach won’t want to go with.

That I do agree with, but it shouldn’t be so bad as perhaps some other teams would have it simply because we have Double Trouble.

If they can still keep us competitive with a QB throwing multiple picks a game, a rookie shouldn’t be too much of a change :)

Agree

Before this year, Jake’s worst statistical year was the year we went to the Super Bowl. That is the main reason why I feel this is not a rebuilding job when looking for a QB (especially if we keep Fox and the same offensive style). With our strong running game, we don’t need great QB play.

Any chance he still plays Sunday with a broken finger?

I don't think so

I mean, there is a chance I guess – there hasn’t been an announcement. On the Observer’s website they wrote that Romo missed three games (and a bye week) with a similar injury.

by R-F on Nov 30, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

I guess Christmas came early :)

And we’ll get what we’ve wanted… for better or worse. Too bad for Jake though. This very well could be the last time we ever see him play again.

More bad news: Beason arrested on a assault charge

Jon Beason has been arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from an incident at a strip club on the 15th.

Seems like everything is going sour this year.

WOW

Now that took me by surprise.

by SmithnCompany on Nov 30, 2009 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

Don't read too much into it just yet.

Jon Beason is pleading not guilty according to Inside the Panthers, and the one that he supposedly punched has a police history of assault charges himself. Let’s wait to see what Beason has to say before we run and anoint him a heretic.

I think it's now safe to say

That Matt Moore will be the starting quarterback next week against the Bucs.

by SmithnCompany on Nov 30, 2009 7:33 PM EST reply actions

its a good plan

to start moore against an easier opponent like the bucs and then when he has confidence we can see what he can do against tougher opponents til the end of the season. my friends he may very well be in my idea our solution to our no first round pick crisis.
