Panthers' Harris: "We Don't Cry When We're Hurt"

48083_panthers_camp_football_medium
Below my first post on Cat Scratch ReaderD-Ranged1 laid down the first comment, and it went a 'lil sumthin' like this...

Star-divide

"Here’s to hoping we complete the rest of the season injury-free and come back next year on track."

Yeah, injuries have plagued us all season.  No matter how much we hate them, they're still a part of the game.  And when they do knock us down, we gotta deal with them the best we can.

As all of you are well aware, we've been hit exceptionally hard this year by the injury bug, as a handful of guys have missed games here and there.  One of the more frustrating ones was when Maake Kemoeatu got hurt during training camp.  After that happened, we turned around and traded for another defensive tackle only for him to ultimately end up on the injury reserve list as well.

...Then there was also our backup quarterback, Josh McCown, who got banged-up... then it was Thomas Davis, who's a huge part of our defense, who was lost for the season... etc.

As you can imagine, this is not the type of trend we wanted to be in the middle of.  So, ya know, we can sit here and cry "OOOOH we're losing because of injuries," or we can have the guys who step in for those who are hurt and have them just flat-out get the job done.

We're 4-6 right now, with a chance to be 10-6 if we play the game how it aughta be played.  From here on out, we gotta play as if this is a one game season where we absolutely CANNOT lose.  I know our team is up for the challenge, and I hope you guys are game to root us on throughout every Panther play...

Thanks

Chris it is great that a player will actually discuss the problems withg their fans. I know that you guys have the desire to win even though some beat writers say you have lost heart. Let’s just strap it on Sunday and show the Jets that we can play football and that we deserve to be in the playoffs. I know you can do it.

10-6 sounds good Chris...

And this:

or we can have the guys who step in for those who are hurt and have them just flat-out get the job done.

I think every SB winner has had a key player injury they had to overcome. The Panthers have the depth to play at a high level every week. Guys like Landon Johnson, MacBern and Sherrod Martin can get it done!

Thanks for the contribution.

Thanks for Joining us Chris...

I can’t speak for all…but I’m w/my team 1 and 15 or 15 and 1… right now I know that 10 and 6 is possible for this team if the fans and the players believe. I’m looking at TN… their on a 4 game rip b/c of a spark of beliefe that they won’t be denied. I hope u can get all of your teammates to adapt that attitude…WE WON’T BE DENIED…from the QB to the Punter to the Waterboy. The Panthers can get this done and have one of the greatest come from behind stories in NFL history…ARE THERE ANY PANTHER FANS WITH ME?

10-6 sounds very achievable..

I have been a Panther fan from the teams’ inception, through the tough seasons and the Super Bowl run, and I truly believe that the “Cardiac Cats” can get it done this season and make a strong case for the playoffs, regardless of the injuries. I saw glimpses of that Super Bowl team in the way in which we avenged last years playoff loss at Arizona…absolutely stunning! I am with you on that one rawjem01! GO PANTHERS!! Chris, thanks for communicating with us from inside the Panthers organization, it means alot and we are behind the Panthers no matter what, cheering on to victory until the end! I am so thankful we do fly under the radar, and pounce on opportunities when they arise!

Wow. Getting a reply to something I said is beyond awesome. That is absolutely, positively the best reply I think I could have possibly asked for, though.

It is so refreshing to see that kind of heart displayed, I hope everyone on the team shares your sentiments.

I know our team is up for the challenge, and I hope you guys are game to root us on throughout every Panther play…

I fully and wholeheartedly believe that statement and I assure you everyone reading this post will be here on game day discussing every play and rooting for you guys.

By the way, you’re definitely a class act, Chris. To be here discussing and replying to our comments is absolutely amazing. We’re behind you guys 100%.

PS – hope I didn’t come off too negative with the injury comment. Wasn’t meant to be, just a depressed remark on a depressing day after a depressing loss! lol

Thanks for communicating with us, the fans...

it really means a lot. I think if you guys will bear down and do the things that should be done, there’s no reason this team can’t be 9-7 or 10-6.

It is comforting to know that you guys aren’t whining about injuries, and that you are taking responsibility for your play. It speaks volumes about your character.

Here’s to a 10-6 season and a SB run! I know you will have my full-fledged support, regardless of what happens from here on out.

by bwsmith25 on Nov 24, 2009 4:43 PM EST reply actions

It's not the injured player's backups that need to get the job done

It’s the uninjured guys playing key roles that aren’t getting the job done. It’s a starting QB that can’t be trusted. It’s an offensive coordinator that suddenly abandons the run, even though he has the best RB tandem in the league.

Talking about 10-6 is like believing in Santa Claus… It’s never going to happen, UNLESS you fix the problems. So our only option is to cross our fingers and hope that either Jake does a complete 180, or Fox and Davidson catch some serious enlightenment… and quick!

Realist, pessimist, they seem the same to me

You are right on point here Chris, every team has to overcome adversity of some sort, whether it be injury or something else. We have just had more injuries than normal, but that gives us a chance to evaluate depth and find potential diamonds in the rough. Along with win a few football games.

by Flowing Willow on Nov 25, 2009 7:30 AM EST up reply actions

Nah a pessismist would be more like...

this team is complete garbage and will not win another game this year! Fox, Davidson, and Jake should be fired immediately. Fox couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag, Davidson wouldn’t know an offensive play if it was to hit him in the face, and Jake can’t hit the broad side of a barn. The defense…well the defense couldn’t stop a high school offense. Blah, blah, blah. We don’t have too many pessismist on this blog unless we are losing on Sunday.

Hey man,

Reality is overated ;-)
I have to believe we’re going all the way to the SuperBowl …..right up to the point of being mathematically eliminated. Foolhardy optimism It makes those cold Yuenglings taste even better on gameday. I watched the Eagles make improbable late season playoff runs two out of the last 3 years…it can be done…momentum is a crazy force that can magically cure alot of problems. Time to write my letter to Santa.

Looks like Kemo is far from crying in that picture

Chris, who is your best friend (if you have one) on the team?

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Nov 25, 2009 9:41 AM EST reply actions

Why not cry b/c I am about too.

Okay enough lets all be honest when Kemo went down our D-Line got killed; when Thomas Davis went down our playmaker and break out year/Pro Bowl LB was robbed from us.

Still what killed us was the double edged sword that is Mr. Peppers and of course on again off again QB Jake Delhomme.

Granted we don’t have a #2 WR in his prime and Delhomme would never throw to him anyway so who knows ?

It is going to cost Hurney and Fox their jobs and if it doesn’t then Richardson must have a bigger heart then any of us (no fun intended).

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Nov 26, 2009 11:12 PM EST reply actions

I really don’t think we can attribute too many loses to Peppers alone. For most of the losses, it was just down right stupid play calling. I’ve not really seen any distinct indication that Peppers has cost us a game specifically, nor our defense as a whole. Sure there’s a slight lack of depth but we’ve made do (and well, at that) and even when our offense has been putrid, the defense has held. Our defense is 24th in the league in points allowed, meanwhile we’re 5 yards out from being a top 10 in yards allowed. That to me says our D is getting scored on a lot from teams starting with a short field, which I take as meaning our offense isn’t moving down field near enough to at least get deep punts, and our special teams is allowing too many long returns. There are also a few games where our defense was on the field entirely too long. Add that on top of our injuries and I’d say everyone has had to step it up to maintain that kind of position.

Our largest margin of defeat was by 28 points to start the year, against Philly. Since then, our largest m.o.d has been 14. We hold an average m.o.d of 13 points. For our few wins, we have won, averaged, by 8. That says so many things to me but that’s another time, another place :).

If Carolina comes out and plays Panther football this week, we could easily jump back into the top 10 overall defenses.

If our offense had performed up to service consistently, we’d most likely be a top 10 team all around.

When we stink, we smell of a rotten skunk – but when we come to play, there’s no one in this league that can touch us. I’m sure a lot of teams feel that way, but those teams don’t have Double Trouble, Smith, nor an increasingly optimistic defense. Our rookies/players filling in have stepped their game up, we could easily be down there with Detroit and KC with the key positions we’ve lost… but we’re not and that speaks volumes about the front office, coaching staff, and players in my mind, especially considering our thin cap is no well hidden secret.

Tyrell Sutton has made himself a top 10 kick returner among rookies, meanwhile the Cap’n is 5th of 10 among rookie punt returners, and the first rookie on the list that’s not a wide receiver. Sherrod Martin is second only to Jairus Byrd in rookie interceptions with the few games he has played. We have a bright future ahead of us and, if we can draft next year like we did this year (luck/skill wise, depending how you look at it) we’re going to have a very bright QB and WR joining us.

We’re going to give it our all for the remainder of this year and finish as best we can. And next year, when all is fresh and anew? I’m looking for a consistent top 3 defense & top 5 offense.

I hope I was able to brighten your outlook on the season, I know I’m a ton more optimistic now than before I started typing this comment :).

I'm with you on Jake, but not on Pep

Our pass rush has been a pleasant surprise. Even though they are not getting a ton of sacks, they are making some of the NFL’s best QBs very uncomfortable… And it shows by the poor, rushed throws that have really boosted the secondary’s stats.

Golden Tate anyone?

With a threat across from Smitty our pass game should do better and with our 2 all-pro RBs we’d be beast.:)
