Kris Jenkins

Looks like former Panther Jenkins had adapted to the 3-4 pretty well, until being lost for the season with injury. That happened twice while he was a Panther. How do you guys feel about Jenkins? Any locker room trouble from him?

Not even a whisper

He has been quite the leader here, he does a weekly segment with SNY, and he has remained at the facility after the injury to stay involved and try and keep moral up. Personally I love him, and I think he is regarded by many Jets fans as one of our top three players. We are definitely missing him, nobody else on our roster can collapse the middle and take up two guys like big Jinx. Injuries are a little concerning, he wore down last year down the stretch, but that was because Mangini had him in on every snap, we rotated him better this year, but then lady luck played her hand and he went down with a serious injury.

Been really impressed with him since he came over, he is most definitely a fan favourite.

He's also pretty funny.

He always did interviews post-game win or lose.
And when he’s happy he does a little dance and tries to get the interviewer to dance with him.

He actually liked Mangini and credits him for the resurgence in his career.

He’s also a supporter of Braylon Edwards and thinks Braylon can turn things around in New York just like he did after leaving Carolina.

What has happened to the Jets in 2009? You guys started the season so strong and Mark Sanchez was shooting the lights out, and since you guys have looked lackluster at best.

Is there any one major event you can attribute this to? or are there many factors we might not know about in the Carolinas?

Hey James

The worst thing that happened to us this year was going 3-0 to start the season, it heaped false expectation on the season. Before the year, most Jets fans I know has us going 8-8/7-9 around their, but after 3-0 we were Superbowl contenders. it was unrealistic. I can’t really attribute one play, obviously losing Jenkins was a massive dent, the last minute loss to Miami was crushing and then to lose Leon. It all kind of snowballed in a couple of weeks.

We have a problem with some players talking too much and doing little on the field. We also have a problem with getting all our segments to turn up on the same day. If our offence turns up, our defence goes missing, and visa versa, if they both turn up, the Special Teams go on holiday like the Miami home game.

Mark Sanchez

Loks like the kid has had a typical rookie season, flashes of brilliance wrapped around dump plays and poor throws. Is he the QB of the future for the Jets? Was he worth the price?

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Nov 24, 2009 8:57 AM EST reply actions

Hey Jaxon

This is an area that is being hotly debated after his latest meltdown, and the fanbase seems to be very split right now. I think the majority understand that he is a rookie, learning the ropes, perhaps we are asking him to do too much etc

A minority are already calling for his head which I think is very premature, he has the skill set, he has the mentality he just needs to bring it together. There was an interesting article today in the NY Times about his passer rating which is one area where he is heavily criticised and it compared it to players like Elway/Aikman and McNabb all of whom had a lower one.

Personally I believe that he is the future, right now his confidence is at 0, so I’m not looking forward to seeing your 5th ranked pass defence take him on. I think we opened the play-book up a little too much after his early success, and we need to scale it back off to high % completions. Having a deep threat in Edwards might not of been the best move for Sanchez short term but it will be long term.

As a Panther fan, I really like Sanchez. I think you guys found a good QB that, in a couple of years, would be perfectly capable of taking you to a SB, assuming the rest of the team improves/holds together. You guys have a beast in Thomas Jones, and Greene showed a spark. I really do hate that Leon Washington was injured, I’ve been a fan of his since his rookie year when I picked him up to cover an injury in my FFL. He actually lead to me a couple W’s to my surprise.

With that aside, I’ll say that I hope the highlight of tomorrows game for you guys is getting through injury free :). I’m sure you’ll feel the same.

My question being, how’s your secondary? Unless our offensive coordinator gets kidnapped before the game by angry Panther fans, we will probably air it out more than the fans would like. Will your secondary take advantage of this or will Steve Smith break a few off?

Hey D-Ranged1

I’m one of the fans who thinks Sanchez is going to be an absolutely fantastic QB, he just needs time to develop. He had a rough game on Sunday but he has shown that he can bounce back like he did in Oakland after the 5 turnover nightmare at home to the Bills. Right now Sanchez is hot and cold, and which one turns up often determines how well we do.

Absolutely the one thing I look for is injury free to both teams, can’t stand seeing anyone go down with any kind of injury, and it seems we have both been hit with some bad ones, so let’s hope we avoid the serious injury.

Your receiving core might have an ok day, but I wouldn’t rely on Smith, as he is almost certainly going to be blanket coveraged by Revis. Revis has hold Moss to around 70 receiving yards in two games, and held Andre Johnson as a non factor, he truly is the best corner in the league IMO.

However other than that, the secondary is banged up a bit, Donald Strickland had a concussion on Sunday and not sure about his status for Sunday yet, Dwight Lowery our impressive 2nd year player from San Jose had a high ankle sprain returning kicks and he will be doubtful, Jim Leonhard had surgery last Monday on his thumb, but still played and performed on Sunday.

Right now Kerry Rhodes is taking a lot of slack, and he really has been pathetic this season, his coverage skills are bad, he makes no plays (0 sacks, 0 INT, 0 FF) and he got run over by Wes Welker, as a starting safety in the NFL you shouldn’t be getting run over by Welker. So all in all the secondary is not in a good way. Likely we will have Revis/Sheppard as the two corners, Leonhard/Rhodes as the two safeties. It’s when we get into nickel formations you will likely have success, as whichever player Drew Coleman is covering, you should target him.

If you don’t throw to Revis’s side of the field, we don’t have too many play makers in the secondary so I would say you will be fine.

Just a follow up on that

Just came out minutes ago, that apparently the Jets have decided to bench Rhodes this weekend for Eric Smith. A move that I love, Rhodes was not being physical enough and all the problems I listed above. Eric Smith’s coverage skills have never really impressed me, but if you catch the ball, he will knock you into next week.

The Jets will need strong safety play if they intend to control Double Trouble

If you try just 7 in the box, Panthers will run down the field. That 8th guy better pick the right hole and he better make the tackle…same for the Panthers.

Gap recognition

from my point of view has been below average this season, we run hot and cold on it, a few times this year I have seen both MLB’s attack the same hole. I hope that’s not the case this weekend. Eric Smith is a better tackler for my money than Kerry Rhodes.

What is your perspective on the Darrell Revis - Randy Moss battle?

Did Revis shut him down? Not a good week to play Steve Smith in fantasy?

Isn’t Revis the guy the Jets picked in a trade up with the Panthers? We took LB Jon Beason later in the 1st round.

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Nov 24, 2009 8:58 PM EST reply actions

Hey Jaxon

Darrelle Revis absolutely shut Moss down, and I think it’s a case of him being dominated over years that has forced him to refuse to show the respect that Revis deserves.

Randy Moss’s games against the Jets since Revis arrived:

11/22/09- 5REC- 34 yards 13Lng 1 TD
9/20/09 — 4REC – 24 Yds 9Lng 0TD
11/13/08 — 3REC – 26 Yds 16Lng 1TD
9/14/08 — 2REC – 22 Yds 14Lng 0TD
12/16/07 — 5REC- 79 Yds 46Lng 0TD
09/09/07 — 9REC – 183 Yds 51Lng 1TD

The 183 yard game was Revis’s first in the NFL, starting as a rookie after missing a lot of training camp because we were trying to get him tied up to 6 years instead of the 5 he wanted. He did end up signing for 6 years. His TD this weekend was on a 4 yard route that nobody could of done anything about, was just a perfect ball. Numerous times they tried that deep bomb to Moss that seems to work every week, and numerous times Revis batted it down, Moss was actually called on a pass interference which prevented Revis from getting his 2nd INT against him this season, Revis picked off one of the bombs to Moss in the first game.

Not sure if you read about it, but with something like 20 seconds to go on Sunday and the game in hand, Brady/Moss and maybe BB decided to throw a deep ball on Revis, obviously wanting to run up the score, which definitely made a few Jets fans and Rex Ryan mad. Rex could be seen saying ‘F**k them’ on the sideline, and then after the game said something like our guy (Revis) is going to come down with it more often than their guy (Moss). Revis had perfect coverage on the play and the ball fell incomplete.

Personally I wouldn’t play Steve Smith in fantasy football if you have a decent alternative. It was the trade with Carolina that allowed us to move up and select him, and for that an eternal thank you. Most definitely our best player by far, and was worth every penny of what we gave up to get him.

Well we got Beason so it all worked out. ;)

What can we expect in terms of playcalling, will you guys try to run it down our throats, or will you try and give Sanchez some throws? Defensively, should we be worried about your pass rush?

by Flowing Willow on Nov 25, 2009 7:35 AM EST up reply actions

Who Knows

That really is the way this season has gone, I never know what to expect from Schottenheimer’s offence, we are mainly a run first team, but if he sticks to what he has been doing lately then it really will be mixed, a lot of runs with some long bombs to go with it. Maybe after Sanchez’s performance we will simplify it again. It seems that ever time Sanchez has a bad one we say we will simplify it, he has a good one and then we expand it again.

If you would of asked me that 3-4 weeks ago I would of said yes, but we seem to have gotten away from the exotic blitzes we saw earlier in the season, on our day if we bring the house then the pressure is their. I hope that we get back to a lot of pre snap movement on the defensive side of the ball, we have the ability to confuse, but lately we haven’t seen a great deal of it

From my perspective...

I really do believe you’re going to have more success with Thomas Jones AND Greene. Carolina has improved it’s rush defense but we’re still nowhere near where we would like to be, in my opinion. If they commit to the run, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see Jones rack up 200 yards, and Greene around 75. I don’t think we’ve faced any running backs as legitimate as Jones, in my opinion of course.

As far as the passing game goes… I just hope our rookie (Sherrod Martin) picks off your rookie (Mark Sanchez) a few times :). He has really shown great things during his few games – like, getting more picks in his first game than our starting FS Godfrey has in his 22 regular season starts.

by D-Ranged1 on Nov 25, 2009 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

I would be very surprised if Sanchez manages to go the whole game without throwing a pick. If we get a lead early then he will throw very sparingly, so your best chance is to put us in a situation where we have to throw, down late or 3rd and longs. That is where the success is going to come.

I saw the game against the Dolphins, and I noticed a few broken/missed tackles by you guys, and Greene is notorious for breaking tackles, so I’m hoping he gets in the game more. Jones is always one burst away from a big gain, he is infuriating sometimes, with his bulk getting tripped up. He seems to have corrected that though, and the pressure from Greene for carries has really pushed him and he has just been elite the past 4-5 weeks.

Yeah, some of our tackles have been…. lacking, to say the least.

If I had any sense I’d start Greene in my FFL this week. Last time I tried that, though, I got -1 points.

I’m really looking forward to this game. I’m a fan of running the ball, and big backs bulldozing through tackles. Can’t wait to see how both teams utilize their running backs.

8-3 is my record

Weeks I have lost are Jets v Saints, Jets v Bills, Jets v Patriots, where I think Sanchez combined for around 13 turnovers, and put up -5 to -8 points.
