Panthers Harris: My Thoughts on the Dolphins Game

Chris-harris-vs-dolphins_medium

Hey, hey, Cat Scratch Reader!  Currently, my official blog is on LockerBlogger.com, but I wanna share a few things with you guys over here every once in a while.  If you want, check me out at the following address to hang out daily...

My LockerBlogger Blog

--------------------

Oh man... what a tough loss last night.  We had a chance to win it - we really did - but we just didn't play the way we should've played.

In the first quarter, we played well defensively, but after that, we couldn't really get off the field on the 3rd down.  There were just too many long drives on us.  Obviously, the game didn't unfold the way we planned it to, so this one's definitely a tough pill to swallow.

Now we're even further behind the eight ball, sitting at a record of 4-6.  We could have been back at .500, with our playoff chances looking much sweeter, but the season's not over yet.  We still have six games left, and each one of them are going to be a dog fight.  We don't have any room to spare, so we're pretty much gonna have to play a one game season from here on out.

The mood in the locker room stinks of disappointment, and now we have three whole days to sit around and think about last night's loss before we get back to practice on Monday.  But, you know... we'll get over it and move onto the next game with our heads held high.  The Jets are next, and we fully plan on making sure that game isn't a replay of last night's.

It was certainly a hard loss for Panther fans across the world.

Here’s to hoping we complete the rest of the season injury-free and come back next year on track.

Just want to make this clear to everyone that this is the real Chris Harris!

Wow Chris, thanks for stopping by Cat Scratch Reader.

As the resident optimist here I still think you guys have a shot, but we all know it’ll be an uphill battle because the schedule is simply brutal from here on out.

We’ve all noticed the difference in the lineup since you’ve been back and it’s great to see you on field.

Just keep taking it one game at a time, and if Mark Sachez tries to run up the middle next week make sure you lay a good hit on him for us!

I was a bit hesitant at first to believe – until I followed the link and seen the awesome ’75 Lesabre!

I think the line…

So now I gotta get my music hooked-up in it so I can disturb my neighbors as I beat down the block on a daily basis.

Just sold another jersey… I’m such a sucker for audio.

+1...Welcome to the Blog Chris Harris!

It’s an honor to have a current Panther contribute to the site. Great insight on the Dolphins game. Those converted 3rd downs did hurt, the defense was able to make those stops the week before against the Falcons.

I also couldn’t agree more that the defense suffered a bit in the games you were out with injury. The secondary is playing well.

Keep those big hits coming!

The previous week

Ryan was doing his best Delhomme impersonation… Overthrowing his targets. Henne on the other hand was on the money. I have a new respect for that guy… Did we pass him in the draft?

it's not true

the players don’t have to wait until monday to practice. with the technology available, they should all be watching film of the jets and of themselves, trying to correct mistakes. i’m not talking about game planning and all that, but just looking at improving individual technical aspects of the game and trying to notice some trends on the jets side of the ball. i think that after every game, the players should, at some point after the game, dial in on the next opponent. don’t wait for monday or some official meeting. get started early. mental preparation cuts down on turnovers and penalties.

by usana_gaines on Nov 20, 2009 6:32 PM EST reply actions

Just wondering, how much recent Jets footage can you provide for me aside from highlights which are pretty pointless alone?

Sure if you want to dig into forums and P2P sites but who wants to spend two days doing that for an hours a single game when it will be presented to you in depth?

Your post makes it sound as though endless footage is freely available, am I mistaken? I haven’t found that site yet.

jets footage

there is no reason why the players can’t get footage of the opponent early. and if the staff can provide it to you in depth on monday, they can probably get you some footage before hand. not only that, but you can look at footage of yourself. you can see what mistakes you made and what you need to correct. waiting on someone else to help you practice is not what champions do. every thursday night, peyton manning goes over footage of the upcoming opponent with his receivers to make sure they are on the same page, and this is after all the official team activities and practice end. why would you not want to spend some time getting additional information on your opponent? i think you are mistaken. NFL Sunday ticket and TiVO can get a player every play of every game of the whole year. So if you’re a LT, for instance, maybe you could watch the jets games to see what their defense usually runs in certain situations. you’re not gonna try to develop a strategy or anything, but if you see a certain spin move every seven plays, then you’ll be better prepared for it. if you’ve got two extra days to prepare, you might avoid giving up sacks. the footage is available, and the people who want to spend the time to look at it are the guys who are willing to do a little more to win the games.

by usana_gaines on Nov 21, 2009 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t have NFL Sunday Ticket nor do I have TiVO and I’m not going to assume someone else has such, nor would I expect them to have it because they happen to play on a Thursday once a year and have a few extra days to rest.

Let’s just turn this into Cleveland and send our players out there exhausted every week.

I understand what you’re saying but you don’t necessarily have to attack the guy like he committed a crime for resting after a game that seen so much of the defense. For all we know “sitting around and thinking about it” does involve watching film – it doesn’t necessarily mean he sits in a darkened room for hours on end contemplating what went wrong.

attack

i didn’t mean to sound as though i was attacking him. that wasn’t my intention. but to get practice squad players injured after practice is a whole new level of incompetence. cleveland is horrible.

i mean i think im friends with “britney spears” on facebook so you never can tell.

wow im kinda surprised players actually check out this website. its a good site but its just surprising to me. not to sound weird but big fan of yours

that was a rough loss last night and im slowly losing faith in our team. when we play to our potiential i feel like we are the team to beat in this league but it almost seems rare to see that. i still believe however that we can make the play offs atleast

If this is the real Chris Harris

I just need to know what you think of Sherrod Martin’s play so far this season? He seems to have had an up and down season when you consider how he’s played in the 4 games he has started so far.

by SmithnCompany on Nov 20, 2009 8:41 PM EST reply actions

I'll give him benefit of the doubt.. after all, even if I'm wrong, I lose nothing..

My curiosity actually stems from wondering if he will return to read any comments. I’m sure he’s a pretty busy man as is. Would be interesting to get his take, though.

I still think he’s Martin The Martian – or at least is going to develop into such the way he finds the ball.

Hmm. It does seem pretty interesting that Chris Harris has a post here!

At the very least, we know that a guy in charge of building Harris’s rep posted here if not Harris himself.

If I could say anything to Chris Harris, I’d say that I’m very proud of him as a Carolina Panther. He’s a good, strong player that can deliver a lot of strong hits and he brings another dimension to our defense alongside a rising FS in Sherrod Martin.

Now if only our D-Line and Linebackers could avoid injuries.

Maybe instead of pimping his blog (to help his advertisers)

Mr. H. should be studying film, to see how he can make more tackles in the open field.

Hey guys...

Hey guys… thanks for all your comments. I promise I’m gonna get back to ya on them. Just give me a little time to knock out some replies. I’ll probably answer them in a future blog post.

While I’m here, I can’t help myself but want to respond to one comment that stuck out to me juuuuuuust a little bit. It came from one “BigDavis.” HAHA! What do I wanna say to you, my friend? ;-)

(P.S. I’m not trying to pick on ya, buddy. It’s all in good fun ;-)

Have you ever tried tackling a six foot, 225 pound, running back who runs a 4.3? It’s a tough job. So I’m making sure I study plenty of film to make sure those dudes can’t get by me on game day. But, with that said, we are human and we do make mistakes. We don’t make every tackle - everyone periodically misses one. But you gotta remember that those guys on the other side of the field are being paid seven figures to run me over, so they GOTTA be good.

Again… all you guys are awesome (even you BigDavis – I love ya, man ;-) I look forward to hanging out with all of you a lot more here in the future…

Good answer Chris

We’re going to have to get used to getting answers from the players we criticize! This is new territory for us…;)

Nobody is criticizing the effort though. You guys are playing hard to the end and we appreciate that. What do you think of Sherrod Maertin? The kid is a quick study huh?

Touche, Chris!

That was a very thoughtful response to a pretty glib criticism on my part. I feel ya, buddy.

…and no, I haven’t tried it, and putting myself in that situation — as every fan here should do before we knock somebody — I have a lot more respect for the tests you guys have to pass each week.

Maybe because you’ve always laid the hardest licks on the opposition is why I held you to the highest standard.

I just posted another comment, being very critical of the Captain’s punt returning — if I’d read your reply first, I wouldn’t have come down so hard — for I also have never had the pleasure of trying to field a punt, under the duress he faces. Thanks for opening my eyes a bit wider. You are a class act. I wish you and your guys the best of luck the rest of the season.

LOVE that reply

Chris, first off I’d like to say I’m a big fan, my parents are missionaries in South Africa, so my chances to actually see you guys play are a bit limited. But I listen to every game on the radio, including Thursday’s debacle at 3 in the morning. And I’m curious, how exactly how did you find our humble blog?

As down as everyone has been on the defense since Thursday the 10 failed 3rd down conversions (6 3 and outs) did more damage to the Defense then Miami, so some slack should be considered.

Exactly.

Our defense is great when the offense gives them ample time to rest.

Here’s what we do. We go into the offseason and fire Jeff Davidson right?

Then we hire the head coach of the Clemson Tigers, Dabo Swinney, to take over our offense and lead us to the Super Bowl!

THE CLEMSON TIGERS ARE ON THEIR WAY TO A ACC TITLE! WOOOOO!

I hate to be a nattering nabob of negativity, but...

let’s be brutally honest, making the playoffs this season is going to require near perfection from this point on, and that’s something I haven’t seen from the Panthers all season, Chris.

So I’m having a little difficulty believing that you’re suddenly going to produce that level of performance now. Of course, now you have no choice BUT to produce that level of performance or stick a fork in you, and you know it.

Necessity is the mother of invention of course, but I wish I had felt that same sense of urgency from the Panthers earlier in the season so you wouldn’t need to have your backs to the wall to bring out your best. And don’t try selling me on the idea that what you’ve produced to this point in the season has been the best that the Panthers have been capable of.

If the Eagles had lost tonight the task might have been just a tad less daunting but now you have to climb over 3 teams, with 2 of said teams being 2 games ahead of you, to squeak in as the #6 seed. It’s going to require near perfection AND some help from several of those teams ahead of you.

5-1 from here on out at an absolute minimum, notwithstanding the brutal home stretch you guys have. Anything less and you might as well not even bother, because .500 isn’t getting you in.

Is everyone in the locker room committed to that kind of supreme effort at this point, even in spite of the longshot odds? Honestly, from what I’ve read from some sources I have my doubts.

(Actually now that I think about it, I don’t hate being a nattering nabob of negativity. It’s what I’m good at.)

by Craig Rantz on Nov 23, 2009 12:47 AM EST reply actions

Thanks for the feedback Craig Rantz

Is the ‘Rantz’ a verb in this case? Should we call you N3 instead? Hey…I kid. I’m sure everyone is aware of the hill they have to climb. I also believe every player goes into every game intending on playing to the best of their ability. Where you make a good point but didn’t expand was this:

Necessity is the mother of invention of course

Is the defense continuing to evolve? Is the Meeks Cover 2 system fully implemented at this point? Can our remaining opponents expect to see more wrinkles?
