Chargers release WR Chris Chambers
Any chance the Panthers make a play for him?
SAN DIEGO—The San Diego Chargers have released wide receiver Chris Chambers a day after he had a key catch in a 24-16 win over the Oakland Raiders.
Coach Norv Turner said the Chargers released Chambers because of the emergence of Malcom Floyd and the need to sign a linebacker because of an injury to Tim Dobbins on Sunday.
Chambers was demoted Sunday in favor of Floyd, yet still had a big catch in the win over the Raiders, which lifted the Chargers to 4-3.
Chambers was obtained at the trading deadline in 2007 from Miami for a second-round draft pick, and helped the Chargers reach the AFC championship game that season.
His production dropped off dramatically this season.

ONLY IF
Muhammad is more seriously hurt than we thought and if they don’t think Jarret is the answer. (Did I just state the obvious?)
But I think it’s a long shot and don’t know if he would be a benefit anyway. Plus cap space is always an issue with us this year.
Depends for me on two factors:
1. Do we have the cap room to sign him?
2. Would he be okay being a 3rd reciever?
If he can satisfy these conditions, then absolutely. Kenny Moore is in the doghouse for some reason, and he has to be better than Jarrett… so go for it.

good questions.
- would be the problem. He will be cheap, but how cheap is hard to say. He has seen a big dip in his numbers because he is probably the 3rd or 4th options on the chargers. maybe 5th. Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson are certainly ahead, probably followed by the Running backs and then Malcolm Floyd. I dont think he would have a problem being a 3rd receiver.
This is a guy who was a #1 option in Miami for quite some time, basically until Parcells was brought in. I don’t see why we shouldn’t at least work him out.
If you fall behind Malcolm Floyd and Legedu Naane...
You’re probably not very good anymore.

But...
…even somewhat diminished, is Chambers still playing better than Dwayne Jarrett and Kenny Moore? That’s the real question. Would he improve the Panther’s passing attack? I think he probably would.
Really?
I don’t think he would. He’s fallen off of a cliff as of late.
Sure… maybe all he needs is a change of scenery. But I’m not sure that’s the problem..

I understand he's fallen off a bit (or a lot)...
…but Dwayne Jarrett and Kenny Moore haven’t exactly excelled for us either. I’m not sure they’ve climbed a cliff to even fall off of it yet. At least Chambers has experience. Who knows what he could add to the Panther’s passing game? Regardless, he might be worth a tryout just to see. Of course, he’s got to clear waivers first.
Jarrett's only problem is that they don't throw to him
Because when they do he catches everything he gets his hands on. He’s a big bodied possession receiver, so he’s not going to get a lot of separation. But throw to him high in single coverage and he’ll make the catch.

+1
And reason why I think he should still start in front of Moose, even when he is 100% healthy after the injury.

Did Jarrett have those opportunities in the preseason and showed nothing?
Meanwhile, Kenny Moore showed up and earned the spot but now he doesn’t get a look.
It honestly feels like they’re trying to get blood from a stone with Jarrett so they don’t need to admit he was a bust.
Yes, I know he had a decent catch yesterday… but Moore has shown me (forgive the pun) more.

Moore has also flopped when he's gotten a chance in the regular season.
At least one big drop against Philly, and didn’t step up against Buffalo, either.

Really?
You’re supposed to throw to a guy who never gets open?

I just thought Carolina would make the most sense
Like you said, Kenny Moore seems to be overlooked by the coaching staff or maybe it’s just that they don’t think he has the capabilities to be a legit #2 opposite Smith. I still think Jarrett can be a very good receiver, but he still hasn’t shown much this season (to say it nicely). Then you have the aging veteran in Moose who could be down for a few more weeks (assumption on my part).
This is why I think Chambers could be a valuable asset to the Panthers. He still has good speed and the ability to create separation between him and the corner. Basically him and Jarrett I think could be enough to answer the double coverage Smith still deals with to this day.

Chambers absolutely does not have speed or the ability to create separation any more.
That’s why he got cut.

At this point, there seems to be some confusion as to whether he was waived or released.
If waived, you have to pick up a bad contract. If he was released and/or gets through waivers, he’ll probably be had for the prorated minimum.

Per Adam Schefter:
He’s on waivers until tomorrow night.
He wont get picked up with his current contract and the Chargers will likely release him on Wednesday

They don't have to release him.
Now that he’s been waived, he’s gone if he doesn’t get picked up.

That’s tough.
With Moose out, that still leaves us with Smith, Jarrett, and Moore, which is just about one more receiver than we will ever use.
Seriously, if Carolina had plans of making use of him, I’d say go for it. If not, why waste our time, money, and roster spot on him.
Exactly...
how many passes to a 3rd WR are there in this offense? I just don’t see it as a priority.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Hard to say.
We’d have a better idea if we had NFL-caliber wideouts for that position on the depth chart. Still, for reference, it’s been 13 to Moore and Jarrett, and probably a handful to the TEs when they’ve been split out.

Hmm...
Former Chargers WR Chris Chambers thinks a relationship with a woman that the team believed may have had a negative impact on his performance contributed to his release. Chambers is recently divorced.

I warned Chris Chambers about dating octomom.
He just wouldn’t listen.
