Ask the Phinsider
Greetings Panthers fans from the Phinsider! Jaxon kindly put up one of these posts over on our blog and asked if one of us could do the same over here, so I decided to oblige him.
So we'll be here to answer any of your Miami Dolphins questions that you may have. To start with, Ronnie Brown is going to be out for this game, while Coach Sparano has said that Joey Porter will play. So fire away with any questions and we'll answer them as best as we can. Here's hoping for a good and injury free game!

What in your opinion has been the main cause or causes behind the Dolphins’ struggles this season after coming off a division championship? I’m not very well informed about the Dolphins, so I can only guess that the stronger schedule and injury to Chad Pennington have had something to do with it.
by SlayerGhaleon on Nov 18, 2009 1:50 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Well, as jwillis points out below
there are lots of things that have contributed to it.
Like you said, losing Pennington for the season definitely hurt, and one of the big reasons for that was that our offense was geared towards CP10’s strengths. Short to mid passes that worked well with his accuracy. We didn’t really have much of a deep game because people knew that CP10 didn’t have the strongest arm. Because of that, we have a very similar mold in our receivers: Bess, Camarillo, and Hartline are all very similar slot/possession type receivers. Ginn is the only real deep threat that we have, although he’s not much of one since he only catches 1 pass out of like 10 or so. We do still have a rookie receiver in Patrick Turner, but we have yet to see him out on the field.
Also, as jwillis noted too, our safeties have been absolutely killing us. We haven’t been able to effectively cover tight ends all season. And considering we’ve gone up against 3 of the best in the first 3 weeks of the season, Gonzalez, Clark, and Gates, it has been bad. Giving up big plays to TEs over the middle has been a big part of our struggles.

Camarillo's a little different than the rest...
At least he’s got the speed and quickness to take a short cats and do something with it in the RAC phase. Kind of like Wes Welker lite in that regard.
Fortunately for you, big plays to a TE is probably not something you should fear a ton. Then again, we have taken opportunity when we get a chance (Rosario vs. the perpetually-awful-at-covering-TEs SD defense last year, Barnidge against the Bills’ poor TE coverage this year, etc.)

Slayer..
I’ll try to help Chupa out..
The two things you stated are two of the reasons. If you look at last season and the schedule we had then it was fairly (very) easy. We are currently in the 2nd year under Parcells/Ireland/Sparano. I dont want to say last year was a fluke, but we had alot of things that needed be be changed after the dreadful ’07 season.
Alot of PhinFans we calling for another AFC East Title this year, but realistically it was a stretch. Take the schedule (toughest % wise beginning the season) alone made this year look more think a 6-10 (low) 10-6 (extremely tough) season.
Another main struggle this year is our DB’s. Will Allen our starting/best cover corner tore his ACL 3 weeks ago (maybe 4) and now we are starting our 2 rookies (V.Davis/S.Smith). However its our safetys how have for lack of a better work sucked this year. Coming in Y.Bell was resigned and we picked up Gibril Wilson, so the safetys looked great on paper. On the field however its a different story.
Side Note… Anyone on here from around the Morehead City area… (Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle) Also I went to ECU, but when NC got the Panthers it was to late as I was already a DieHard Phinfan.. just saying

Do you guys really see White being used as the other back next to Williams in the wildcat, or will it be mostly Hillieard?
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.
--Darin Gantt
by MichaelProcton on Nov 18, 2009 2:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
who's to say we even run the Wildcat this game?
Pat White tends to anchor the ‘Spread’ or ‘Pistol’ formation, and seeing as how he has yet to complete a pass this season out of any snaps he’s taken, I would assume that it’s going to be power running from Ricky and Hilliard, with some Lousaka Polite thrown in on short yardage situations. We may see a couple Pat White passes, but generally he’ll be running the option and he’s been a great pitch man, setting up great room for Ricky to run after he secures the ball.
by chrislucas on Nov 18, 2009 3:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You guys really run the pistol?
Interesting. I haven’t seen any of that. And given that 11 of White’s carries have only gone for 15 yards ,has he really opened up space for the pitch man?
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.
--Darin Gantt
by MichaelProcton on Nov 18, 2009 4:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
it's a variation of the pistol with him standing a shorter distance than regular shotgun, with one or two backs behind him
he’s executed one absolutely perfect pitch to Ricky that led to a score against the Pats, he did that shortly after gaining 30+ yards on a keeper ziging and zagging around and between defenders, keeping good up field vision.
I used to view his package as a momentum killer, but he does add a little excitement to our run game, and once he learns to hone his accuracy then i think that formation will be a greater success.

as Chris states
Patty is not used as a running back… well not a true running back. when he comes in you can bank on a spread option/true option.. with the occasional incomplete pass. Obviously PW is not gonna run up the gut again, he tried that last week and got blasted!

He's been pretty great.
He makes his rookie mistakes but you can see how amazing he will be in years to come. He’s also not targetted as much as a rookie CB would normally be, because he’s on the WR like white on rice. Once he gets used to positioning himself and using his safety help effectively, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

Exactly.
QBs had actually targeted the veteran Will Allen over Smith quite a bit this season. But like Chris said, he has made some rookie mistakes but seems to be looking better each week.

Quite possible.
Smith is a damn good receiver, and I would love to have him in the aqua and orange. But our CB’s are playing better than you would expect for rookies. Since they do still make rookie mistakes, I think if Smith can identify where their coverage skills are a little lacking and exploit it, he can have a big day.

I think he'll beat our rookies a couple of times, but both Davis & Smith are studs and Vontae has already taken one back to the house
I would look out, if Jake forces any throws, our CDs will sniff them out. Vontae even INT a ball from Brady intended for Moss last week. If they could keep the Pats WRs in moderate check, i think they’ll be able to hold their own against most receivers in the NFL.
And in a couple of years, watch out — unstoppable.

Definitely a starter
His stats are killed though by terrible WR drops, an O-line that shows up every other week, and Ints off the WR. He’s definitely a starter, and plenty of NFL teams would kill for Henne, even though the media doesn’t think much. Lemme say this, haven’t been this excited since Marino left.

He might be.
A lot of the games so far, they kept Smith on one side and Allen/Davis on the other, but I didn’t get to see last weeks game so I don’t know if they are still doing that.
That being said, he did very effectively cover some of the better recievers we’ve played without letting up too many big plays. He let up a couple to Vincent Jackson, got beat on one and the other was simply an amazing catch. Reggie Wayne and Randy Moss didn’t get much when he was covering them, most of their yardage came when they had either Allen or Davis covering them.

Your coverage on wideouts really hasn't been that awful.
I’ve heard a lot of complaints about the play of the secondary, but you’re strongly in the middle of the pack in production allowed to opposing wideouts (16th.) Things could be much worse, particularly when you’ve got so much inexperience out on the field.

In my opinion, I would say DeAngelo Williams.
It seems to me that we do much better at stopping a bruising power back than an agile and elusive one. Part of that has to do with the sloppy tackling of the safeties and linebackers. i.e. The DeAngelo run against us in the pre-season game. He broke what, like 6 tackles on that?

I think with Roth back in the mix, the tackling should be a BIT better
but unless they started having to chase greased hogs in prep for this game, i may be yelling a lot during this game.
Our only hope to stop the run game is jump to an early lead and force a reliance on the pass.

Stewart can be pretty elusive too
He get’s label as more of a bruiser because he’s compared to DeAngelo. Well, that and that he can drag multiple DBs draped around his waste about 15 yards without going down. But he can make people miss, and has a really nasty stiff arm.

That is true, he is pretty elusive.
I just meant, as you said, that compared to DeAngelo, he seems more of a power back. In my own personal opinion, I think Williams is better at being more elusive than Stewart, but admittedly, I haven’t seen that many Panthers game, so it might just be from a few games where Williams had a better day.
By the way, what’s up with Stewart? I heard he didn’t participate in practice the other day. Is he going to be good to go for tonight?

Yeah, saying D-Will was elusive and Stewart powerful was by no means a knock on Stewart… but I would argue that Williams is the more elusive out of the two and Stewart is the more powerful.
To answer your question, Stewart’s going to be fine. Not practicing is a weekly occurance for J-Stew.

Deangelo's much better at
Changing directions when nothings there and turning it into a big play. I only remember Stewart losing yards when he does that

True.
That’s something I believe can develop in a young back, as Williams used to be that guy getting smacked in the backfield trying to make something out of nothing.

Stewart hasn't practiced before Thursday all season.
And they’ve continued to do a lot of practicing indoors with the weather bad here, so DeAngelo has been held out to prevent his knee from getting worse.
And Williams often tends to have the bigger day because he gets the bigger share of the carries. He’s certainly efficient and productive with them, but I think Stewart could probably be equally productive were the distribution switched. He has pretty well taken back goalline duties that Williams took from him in the second half of last year.

Although...
Stewart is hardly just a pure power back. He’s certainly got the speed to break long ones, as he showed last week in clinching the Falcons game.

Yeah thanks.
It was kind of a depressing day when I read that. The remainder of our schedule suddenly looks a lot tougher.

It sucks for me too...
I had him in my FFL. Now I’m struggling to find a replacement.

you could always try Sheets
he wasn’t available in my league, as of yet at least. I got Snelling as well since turner is out.

Snelling's a good back.
He certainly made us look a little silly last week. I loved him coming out of West Virginia and couldn’t imagine why they were only using him as an FB.

I've got one..
Fueled by four weeks of fantasy let down.
Who’s the better receiver: Ginn Jr using his hands, or Ginn Jr wearing a helmet with a bucket on top?

HAHAHA!
Good one.
Not hating on your team, by the way, being I reside in FL now, Miami gets the benefit of doubt against any team other than Carolina.
I expected Ginn to turn into a major deep threat this season and drafted him accordingly in my FFL. How disappointed I was. I guess that goes along with my bad luck… I’ve amassed the highest total points yet sit at 4-6.

I've suggested Jake just try and wedge the ball in the facemask opening this season.
Maybe somebody could send the memo to Chad.
