Panthers vs. Cardinals Game Day Open Thread
Carolina Panthers at Arizona Cardinals, Nov 1, 2009 4:15 PM EST
I hope everyone had a Happy Halloween last night. I won third place in a costume contest. My wife used a make-up kit with blood, latex etc.. and put one of the those fake screws through my forehead. I then donned my Panther jersey and told the crowd "I'm a Panther fan, Jake Delhomme is my QB and I am really screwed!"
Let's hope the scariness ended last week and we get our act together today!
This is now an Open Thread!

but jamarcus russell just threw an int on his first throw…makes me feel a bit better about our situation
No gain, but was that a toss play?

Good to See Support here
It would be easy to get down after all that has happened so far. Keep Poundin’ …I am just hoping that we keep the mistakes down.
One Delhomme pass, one ball bounces off a receiver's hands.
Why am I not surprised?

I hate the play action on 1st down.

EXCELLENT CATCH BARNIDGE!

I agree
That was TERRIBLE THROW by Delhomme
Certainly.
He should have skipped his hands and thrown it so it stuck in his facemask. I guess that would have been a more sure play.

Not good enough
He should also do a 360 and start pop lock for 5 secs
There's a reason he doesn't.
His conversion percentage on 3rd and 4th and short has been godawful over the last few years.

It's true.
His one handed catch last game was pretty awesome on a bad throw by Jake, and he’s been a pretty good practice guy.
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Rosario is on pace for 405 yards this season.

That's because he has no one to give him the ball.

Use running and short passes to drive down the field. Hopefully Davidson will keep the “shots down the field” to a minimum for a while.
For reference
Cardinal’s #1 ranked rush defense: 66 yards per game allowed

you're wrong
you ‘re wrong and you’re negativity is absurd. you obviously are not a panthers fan cuz the only one you ever compliment is jake, and this has been his worst season ever. pep fought off the block. the guy went for his knees and pep jumped back to avoid the block and had the awareness to go right and jump for the ball. it wasn’t thrown right at him, he went and got it. he is also 6’7 and had to jump. name another DE with the size and jumping ability of pep. it didn’t go right to him. you’re just a hater.

allen and taylor, seriously?
you try to insult pep by comparing him to allen and taylor, two of the best players in the game. neither one is playing as well as pep this season, or last season. allen has 1 interception in his career and no TDs, probably can’t jump and doesn’t have the lateral movement like pep. taylor is an OLB, and former defensive player of the year. but i guess when you say anybody can do it, you mean any all-pro player.
Taylor has played exactly one of his twelve seasons as an OLB.
And Allen has certainly played better than Peppers in each of the last three years.

Jared Allen 6’ 6" 270 lbs Vertical Jump 33"
Jason Taylor 6’6" 255 lbs Vertical 32"

I’m looking forward to reading the game blog, and it’s incredible to me that you waste the time to post all your sarcastic garbage.
We finally have a game to be proud of, and elate in, and you inject all your crap.
You’re not clever, or witty, just the opposite.
To refute what you just said “anybody could do it,” did you happen to note , in your hatred of Peppers, that he played off 2 blocks, then, noticing the play develop, dropped back into the passing lane?— this exhibits such a unique combination of versatile attributes that I can think of few DE’s — ever — that could have pulled it off.
And now I’ll desist from any more of what I know you’ll scream at as “personal attacks”, and just skip over your future posts, as I advise all Panther fans to do.
Are you kidding me?

So far, we have

Thankfully someone told Davidson to stop being stupid
It IS easier to do that when you're in the lead most of the game, though.

Good thing Warner doesn't play in Charlotte.
He’d be booed off the field. Also, Martin just took the FS job.

Virtually everything that could have gone wrong has so far.

I don't agree with this call at all.
John Fox is just running clock. I’d be pulling the 2 minute drill right now.
Not for the TD, but I’d at least try to get within the 30 yard line for the field goal. Give John Kasey a chance to kick up 3 points.
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Is a potential three point lead tacked on to 21 (which doesn't even change the number of scores they're behind)...
worth a potential turnover?

--Darin Gantt
by MichaelProcton on Nov 1, 2009 5:42 PM EST up reply actions
You'd have to be smart about it. Keep the ball on the ground.
But traditionally our 2 minute drill has been pretty deadly. It’s not a big deal to me since we’re so far ahead, but I would have liked to see our hurry up offense, if anything just to see if we’re waddling around like we were against Buffalo.
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
So either RB could fumble.
Further, as somebody else mentioned, we could have an injury.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.
--Darin Gantt
by MichaelProcton on Nov 1, 2009 5:45 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah true.
But that can happen on every play of every game. With a field goal at halftime with momentum on our side, we could have gotten ahead by four possessions and put this game even more out of reach. I would have just liked to seen us burn our 3 timeouts and see if we could get into field goal range.
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn

Essessionally 4 possessions.
That’s if they make all three 2 point attempts, which I don’t think they can pull off.
The game is just about back on though! We could go back and forth all day. In the end, Fox is a conservative coach and as long as we have him, he’ll pull moves like that.
But we’ve gotten to the Super Bowl with him, so it works. And whatever works, works.
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn

I mean actually throw. I disliked the odds of us winning without mixing up the plays. I was also concerned with an Arizona ST TD with our wobbly ST.

Yes, those wins 2 seasons ago were mediocre.
If he is no good, cut him. I am sure Wade Philips would love to have him back. If he is good use him. Keeping 2 questionable QB’s on the team behind Jake is terrible management. Especially with our penchant for trading 1st round picks.

They certainly were.
One was against a Seattle team with nothing to play for that Moore only managed 13 points against, and one was against a Tampa team that sat the majority of their starters and played second- and third-stringers most of the day.

Then he should be cut.
He is taking up space that could be used for someone else.
I am not trying to hate, I have just seen too many games slip away due to conservative play calling. But 10 mins ago when I made that comment, we had just given up a few…
Forget it, the D stepped up, and I am glad for the win. High fives all around.

He's a fine backup.
He gives the defense good work in practice, he can hand the ball off, he’s cheap. But he’s certainly not a better option than Delhomme.

Nobody "deserves" individual accolades.
He got there because he’s stayed healthy on a good team with a good line that has been good enough to win games and run a lot. He’s also shown that a first-round pick can get better and not be complacent when problems in his game are identified.

But he didn’t get complacent, he kept working hard, didn’t get bitter when Stewart was drafted. He’s consistently humble and works his ass off.
If that’s not deserving to be recognized for an individual achievement I don’t know what is.

The defense?
I didn’t know the entire defense was holding the team from being a possible playoff contender. Jake Delhomme? yes…Jeff Davidson? I agree to an extent
by SmithnCompany on Nov 1, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions
Sure they were.
A defense that’s built on bend and don’t break that never forces turnovers and doesn’t make stops in the red zone isn’t going to get it done.

Yes because a defense usually holds a team
From scoring after a Jake pick, which already has the opposing offense in great field position.

i’m feeling monday optimist can be truly optimistic about everything
Jake got injured on a hit
He came back but he was having trouble making throws and someone figured that it would be okay to let Moore hand off the ball.
He also was having a hard time breathing.
Which says to me it’s a rib issue.

I would like everyone to notice that their team didn't boo all the players off the field as Panther "fans" routinely do after a single three-and-out.
Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.
--Darin Gantt
Well when the OC routinely calls for a draw play on third and longs, then I think a “boo” here and there is warranted.
by SmithnCompany on Nov 1, 2009 7:43 PM EST up reply actions
A draw on third and long worked at least twice in this game alone.
And 60K out of 80K is not “here and there.”

Maybe they switched mojo before the game.
Serious gratz to the panthers, and especially Jake Delhomme, Julius Peppers, and DeAngelo Williams
Great job
Jake for not turning over the ball. This is how we should play 14 pass attempts, 40 carries between deangelo and stewart!!
What happened on the peppers INT? Gamecenter isn’t very explanatory
