Ask Revenge of the Birds

Hello all, Andrew from Revenge Of The Birds here to start preparing for our game on Sunday. Although some may disagree, I think it will be a closer game then we think. The Cardinals could get sucked into the hype that they're one of the top teams in the league, and the Panthers are desperate for a win. As I've heard a few times, there is a chance that Jake Delhomme will be benched, but it doesn't seem likely at this point - that is one key to the game. So ask what you want and I'll check in as much as possible to answer any questions. Also, if somebody could post the same QnA over at our site, I know some of the guys have some questions. Thanks.

Andrew, thanks for stopping by.

I’ll leave it up to Jaxon, our venerable leader to lead the Panther Q&A over at your blog (as his does most weeks for our opponents).

My question is regarding your run defense: I was shocked to see the Cardinals are #1 in the NFL against the run.

What can you attribute this to, and do you think the run D will be able to hold against DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart this weekend?

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

I attribute it to a simpler defensive game plan

Last year Clancy Pendergast had them running a very funky hybrid defense that was often too cute for it’s own good. This year it’s a much simpler attack and so far it’s working pretty well. It also didn’t hurt that we mounted early leads against Jacksonville, Houston and Seattle that basically forced them to throw most of the second half.

What bezekira said

but it also has to do with teams getting sucked into our style. When we start airing it out, I think other teams do the same, especially when they fall behind quickly. Our run defense is good too. You can’t go 6 games into the season as the number 1 ranked run D by accident.

This week I think they’ll have some problems with your backs, which is why the Cardinals need to get out to an early lead. We may also do the same thing to Delhomme as we did to Manning and force him to throw. I don’t see either back gaining over 100 yards.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

May sound wierd

I think a big contributing factor is the secondary, at least through the last few games. DRC and Mcfadden have been able to contain the oppositions receivers with little help allowing the lb’s and safties to help out up front and get pressure and/or contain the run close to the line of scrimmage.

No Running Allowed

I agree with Beze for the most part. The whole philosphy of the 09 cards D seems to be: No Running Allowed. It’s the focus of the beginning of the game and seems to be something the team can turn back on whenever they need it right now. It also doesn’t hurt that our offense has the potential to score quick stricks at anytime, which I think makes teams gameplan thier offense against us to try and score 24-28 points and move away from the run game. But the D has really stepped up in goal line and short yardage situations as well.

Only one question:

Since your opening slip-up against the Niners (2 TOs, close loss), your guys seem to have been solid (save the Colts game with 3 TOs) including a great win against the Giants. It seems that turnovers beat you more that the other team does. If your guys don’t make mistakes, does that mean a blowout victory? I see you said it “might be closer.” Is that only with AZ turnovers?

by chillicothe20 on Oct 28, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

Turnover margin is very, very, very important to this team

How important?……Under coach Ken Whisenhunt, the Cardinals were 17-0 when winning the turnover margin in a game and only 1-15 when they were on the wrong end.

If we do win the turnover margin, yes I see this as a game that’ll be over before the start of the fourth quarter. No offense but if the Cards can get a decent lead and take your running game out of the picture, then this should be a cake walk (obviously this is my opinion only and may not reflect the collective view of ROTB).

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Yes

Turnovers and a complete meltdown on defense would be the only things that keep the game close, which is something the Cardinals have screwed us over with in the past done before.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

As a team fairly new to the idea of winning and being cofident

our team still has the potential to get that quicksand feeling Keanu Reeves describes in the Replacements movie. “First one thing goes wrong, then another, then another, untilyour so worried you can’t move, like quicksand.” AS an example remember the Monday night meltdown against da Bears a few years ago.

I do see the culture changing with Whiz and the team. For example Warner’s no respect quote this week, but its still a building process. In the Indy game, I could see it and feel it in the stadium. However, in the SF game, it was more a matter of we just came out flat and never got going, maybe due to a lackadaisical preseason, rust, whatever. Our offense is still struggling a little and we are starting to hope to develop some kind of a run game. If we can ever get it going, watch out with the D we have right now.

Sorry, I tend to run on, so getting back to your origianl question, I think if the Cards win or break even in TO’s they win the game.

Adrian Wilson (Woo! Go Wolfpack!)

What are your feelings on Adrian Wilson as a safety, and how he’s used in the defense? In a defense like the one the Panthers ran for years, there was very little difference between the strong and free positions, but we haven’t really had real talent at the safety position. However, defenses with difference-makers at safety, like Baltimore with Ed Reed, Pittsburgh with Troy P. and Philadelphia with Brian Dawkins, will allow those guys to freelance and make plays.

How would you characterize Adrian Wilson’s role in the Cardinals’ defense (freelance or more traditional), and has his play this year differed from previous years? And what’s stopping him from reaching the same levels of prominence of those other elite safeties?

by r3 on Oct 28, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

A-dub is the man

In my mind he’s a very small tick below Ed Reed and Troy P and at this point I’d take him over Dawkins. The only thing that keeps him from being mentioned among those guys is that he plays in Arizona.

His role in this defense is pretty much the same thing that it’s been for his entire career. He’s a very unique player because his blend of athleticism and size allows him to do just about everything. He’s a freelancing safety on first and second downs and he’s capable of providing help on deep routes or flying through a running lane to cut down a back for a minimal gain. On passing downs (aka Nickel or dime defenses) he’s basically a linebacker because he spends most of his time around the LOS and is one of the better blitzers on the team. His only true weakness is that he can’t man cover very many receivers but how many strong safeties really can?

Basically in my mind he’s freakin’ amazing. He’s the biggest underrated player of this decade. Oh yea and he’s one sack and one pick away from the 20/20 club.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Oct 28, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Wilson is in the upper echelon of strong safeties IMO

The only problem is that he is a Cardinal. Aside from the last 3 or so years, he hadn’t been a household name, and he is now just starting to become one. The problem that the Cardinals are facing as a team right now is a lack of national recognition, and that trickles down to Wilson. I’m sure if he was a Cowboy or Steeler or whatever, then he would be considered one of the best.

He generally stays around the LOS but won’t hesitate to drop into coverage. The Cardinals use him all over the field, and that is the main reason we usually stick another safety deep(Matt Ware). The beauty about Wilson is he can blitz like a defensive end, play the run like a linebacker, and play in coverage like a corner. He is bigger to our D then most realize. When he’s missed games before, we’re not the same.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

Wilson may be the best player in the league that no one has ever heard of.

I concur with the other guys on A-Dub.

Wilson did finally get some recognition this week, but he has been a stud for years. I thought I read there was only 1 other player in the history of the NFL in the 20/20 club (of course they only have had sacks as a stat in the last 20 years or so).

Who sees more success?

Assuming Carolina allows Williams and Stewart to get their feet under them, who should Arizona be more worried about? I read somewhere (I want to attribute it to James’ prognosis, but I’m not positive) that Arizona likes to blitz from the corners as well as with their safeties. That could prove difficult for Williams but what about crashing the middle with Stewart? So, to re-state the question, are we going to have better luck running the ball with finesse or power, or maintaining a degree of both?

by D-Ranged1 on Oct 28, 2009 5:59 PM EDT reply actions

Man that's a tough one given that both backs are really good.

I’m going to say power would work best this year but in the past, quick backs have burned us. I think Williams could break one of his signiture runs at any time, but this year quick backs have been getting caught up in the back field(MJD, Slaton, Bradshaw, Julius Jones) and the lone big back ran pretty good on us(Brandon Jacobs). The middle seemed to be slightly exposed last week so we’ll see if the Cardinals make any adjustments.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

Man, this is a tough one.

I would start by saying I would not choose to start either Carolina RB in a fantasy league against our run D this week unless I had no other option. Having said that, I could see Williams break out and get a long run at some point in time so total yards I’m going to lean toward Williams, but if you take out the long run I think up the middle is the better way to go.

yeah i actually like williams and smith this week

i mean even though you are the number one rush defense in the league, williams and steve smith usually have big games against you guys

lol

It’s alright, after all, anything can happen any any given Sunday. I’m sure you guys rebound against Chicago.. At least, I’m hoping you do with Kurt Warner as my fantasy QB.

50-50 game at best today. Man this season is getting crazy.

Hey guys haven’t posted on here for a while but after another game in which we couldn’t finish off an opponent I had to post. First off I would like to officially say that I am sorry to my fellow bloggers for being so mad and getting into a few battle of words here on the site. It is just that I love my team, huge Panthers fan since 95’ and man I am just so upset, frustated, and mad about the type of play and luck we are having this season.

Saints game;

Well all I can say is that we hung with them and still got beat. peppers disappeared again and E. Brown looked lost for us today. T. Davis is now banged up and that is going to make the Falcons game that much harder to win. R. Marshall is also killing us and needs to be gone with Peppers at the end of the year. He was burned on two key passing plays for the Saints today. S. Martin is a ball hawk, just wondering if we are going to move Godfrey back to CB when he returns ??

Our year is all but over and I just gave my Falcons/Panthers tickets away to a buddy of mine b/c I am not going to watch us lose another divisional game next weekend.

I just so tired of John Fox, Jeff Davidson, and Jake Delhomme. I mean the reason we are running on third and long is b/c Delhomme is god awful and we don’t have another receiver opposite Steve Smith.

Smith is getting double and tripled team and Dwayne Jarrett is trying but needs more playing time to become a decent receiver. He had chances today to make some plays and dropped some catchable balls but I just wonder how much longer it is going to take for him to turn it around. He did block great today for our running game though as did Sutton.

Man it just sucks, this season is a throw away so why not play more of Dwayne Jarrett, Gary Barnidge, T. Sutton etc… and see what we have including what we have in Matt Moore.

I just keep wanting us to be good but we are simply not and that pisses me off even more.

I just hope fans are as pissed and mad about this as I am and I know you are Panther Nation.

Bring Back the Cardiac Cats and I am still going to watch some of the game on Sun against the Falcons but I just cannot waste more of my hard earned money to watch this football team choke or simply give games away week after week. I really thought after the Cardinals game we had turned the corner as a team but I was wrong.

We take one step forward (with a win) and two steps back with every loss which is why I don’t see us beating the Falcons but GD it’ I hope we do.

Panthers fan till I die ~
