Jake Delhomme and the NFL Draft in April

Yesterday I posted a blog on the things that were wrong with our beloved Panthers. My key point was that jake Delhomme is no longer the QB that helped come close to winning a Superbowl. The guy has gotten worse and John Fox is afraid to bench him.

Star-divide

The main reason that i am writing this blog is for next years NFL draft. I mentioned yesterday that there were three QBs in college football that people are overlooking. Yes there is Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford. And if we are really lucky then Bradford will slip into the second round because of his shoulder injury. But that is unlikely. So I am going to go into detail about another QB that is proving himself to everyone that he can handle pressure and stay cool in the pocket. Tony Pike from Cincinnati. As I mentioned he has a good build 6'6" 220. His QB rating over his past three years has gone up. This year he has thrown for 1,633 yards and 15 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions. This year he has thrown for at least 2 touchdowns in every game. He stays cool under pressure and in the latest NFL mock draft they have him going in the 3rd Round. He is the type of Quarterback that we can build up into a QB for the future. Give Moore the starting job next year until this guy is ready. Delhomme is really not worth the 5 year deal that we gave him. Any other thoughts post them and I will try to respond.

somehow

we will probably trade into the first round

i've watched some cincy games

he’s good and i’d welcome him. i agree with carolinabrave though…i think we are gonna make trades for a 1st round. Jake definitely won’t be around next year though (i have my doubts about Fox as well).

I have a hard time thinking the Panthers would draft a QB high

It doesn’t match their recent MO…but I think they should strongly consider it

It depends if Fox and Hurney are here.

If they stay, you will more than likely see a FA QB brought onto the roster. If they aren’t here, then they will probably draft one high.

Mmmmaybe...

I LIKE PIKE….butttttttt my main concern with him and Bradford is their inability to stay healthy….both have shown this year a propensity to get injured…esp Pike b/c he is like a toothpick….that would be my only reservation for picking them even though they are darn good qbs

free agents and veterans

I think there are going to be a lot of QBs available before the draft and I expect us to get one. It really depends on Peppers signing and any other expiring contracts. Waiving Jake would clear some cap room, too. I say this because I don’t know how much money we’ll even have a available to spend on a 1st rd QB. With no salary cap, the 3rd QB taken, at pick 43, might want pick #25 money. I don’t know. But how many of these guys coming out of college were better in college than Brady Quinn, Brian Brohm or Josh Johnson. None of those guys have proven anything in the NFL, and Brohm is currently unemployed. Colt McCoy is the only one who hasn’t suffered a major injury. I like Tebow the most, but I would take Bradford’s shoulder over Tebow’s concussion. It’s gonna be wild. I think we need to go all Gruden and bring in about 5 QBs to camp, and they have to prove they are better than Moore to start. Hell, Gruden might be our coach come April…who knows?

by usana_gaines on Oct 27, 2009 5:56 AM EDT reply actions

I think Brohm is on da PS

but still i like where ur going. Cut Delhomme, Keep Moore, Feeley, McCown bring in a couple free agent QBs like Mark Bulger and Jason Campbell, OR even trade for a backup QB on another team who might be able to leap to a starter like Jordan Palmer-Cincy, Kevin Kolb-philly, Troy Smith-Baltimore and a few others. Bring them to camp and let them compete

Moore, Feeley, and McCown

Are all free agents after this season. We would have to resign all of them. I could see keeping Moore, bringing in a veteran like Campbell, and drafting a QB in the second round. Then let them fight it out in training camp.

Free agent QBs

I think our best recourse for next season is to pickup one of the many likely free agent QBs. My order of preference based on those likely to be set free:

1. Brady Quinn – Has the intangibles, the build, and the arm necessary to be a high caliber NFL QB. Currently suffering in the quagmire that is Cleveland. In a place like Charlotte, he could thrive. he also could start immediately and be a long term solution. We should bite hard if he comes available.

2. Jason Campbell – Mobile, strong arm, good accuracy, 4 years of starting experience. However, has shown that he gets nervous under pressure and takes his eyes off his receivers when under durress to look at the pass rush. I feel however, that he is the product of a sinking ship in Washington, and the wrongs can be undone. Has plenty of quality time left should he prove he can be the long term answer.

3. Chad Pennington – Extremely accurate (one of the most accurate in NFL history) but injury prone. Does not have a cannon for an arm, but is a very smart player. Injury prone. Will be coming off a season ending shoulder injury. Likely to be released by the Dolphins in favor of Chad Henne. Would serve as an adequate starter for 1 or 2 seasons while we groom a rookie.

4. Brian Brohm – Has not shown much in the NFL (has not really had the opportunity behind Aaron Rodgers) but came out of college with the kind of billing that Matt Ryan was also getting, just to a lesser degree. He is raw, but has some time under his belt in Green Bay’s high powered passing offense, so at least has received good mentoring. Big boom or bust potential.

5. Kellen Clemens – Has never really got the fair shot he deserves. Mark Sanchez was handed the keys to the offense the moment he was drafted, and Clemens never was really being considered for the starting job. I dont really know what to think of him because his time has been limited, but he could be servicable for a low price while we groom a rookie.

Pennington...

might be done. I’m not sure he’ll come back the league next year. But, I agree with your assessment of him.

by Scrantsj on Oct 27, 2009 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Quinn- Not a free agent. Under contract through 2012.

Campbell- Needs a new lease on life. I agree he could still be good outside of Washington.

Pennington- I love the guy, but there’s no guarantee he’ll ever be able to play again and he has ability in a vertical passing game whatsoever.

Brohm- A 2nd round pick who got beat out by Matt Flynn a 7th rounder (in the same draft) to backup Rodgers. I highly doubt he has NFL potential as a starter, but I’d be willing to work him out.

Clemens- Could be good, I agree he could be a low price addition.

Quinn will probably be traded

Mangini seems to have seen enough of him to decide that he’s not the future.

Pennington would be interesting if we could add some more receivers to open up the passing game. And he’d be alright if we draft a QB and then look for a 1-year bridge.

Brohm could be brought in, but only as competition. If we’re counting on him to be our “starter” and make him the big QB acquisition of the off-season, we’re in trouble.

brohm

mccarthy said brohm just couldn’t pick up the offense. you have to play faster in the nfl or you won’t make it. he said brohm couldn’t do it, so brohm got cut. i don’t know if he ended up on someone’s ps though.

Campbell is a better QB than people give him credit for. He's in a bad system for him.

Nice pickup on that…I rec’d your post…

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

I love Campbells athleticism

Did you see him avoid that sack last night? The CB dove right over top of him

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Oct 27, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Athletic yes..

But, he needs to be more decisive with the football. He often will take a sack or fumble because he didn’t get rid of the football quickly enough. The protection isnt always the problem for him.

That said, for what we would use him for he would be a great addition.

we need to look at coaches

i think fox’s time is up. he’s inconsistent. let him take over as GM. there are a lot of good coaches available out there. cowher, shanahan, holmgren, gruden, and possibly coordinators from other teams.

by rkpanthers on Oct 27, 2009 8:18 AM EDT reply actions

One those coaching options:

- Cowher: As inconsistent as Fox without Dick LeBeau
- Shanahan: I like him, but if we sign him expect D-Will to be traded, he doesn’t believe in star RBs.
- Holmgren: No argument here, he’s a great coach.
- Gruden: DO NOT WANT. The man cannot draft to save his life and only won a SB by being handed Tony Dungy’s team.

Now, if we could convince Tony Dungy to come out of retirement…

by James Dator on Oct 27, 2009 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions

On the coaches...

Shanahan- do you really think he would trade D-Will? I think his problem is more so based on RBs who are Divas. DLo keeps a low profile and is humble, I think Shanahan would keep him and relish in the dynamite combo of him and Stewart. If we want to maintain our identity as a running team, this is the guy to do it.

Holmgren- Holmgren has made his bread and butter on an offense with a big air attack. Sure, he had Shaun Alexander for awhile there which he exploited, but how well does he fit in with our current personnel? Either way, I agree… great coach, and he would make it work.

Cowher- While I agree that Dick LeBeau was a big part of his success, give the man credit where it is due. He has the experience, the rings, and seemingly the desire to coach this Panther team based on the rumors I’ve heard. Not to mention, I would enjoy seeing some fire in a head coach… certainly you get that with Cowher.

by Tater596 on Oct 27, 2009 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

On Shanahan- His modus operandi is trading RB’s when their value is high. He did it with Clinton Portis, he did it with Rueben Droughens, he did it with Tatum Bell. Shanahan’s offensive scheme makes any RB look like a superstar, which is why so many teams have been burnt gambling on ex-Bronco RB’s. My real guess is he would trade D-Will and amass picks and players, possibly J-Stew too… because I bet he would believe that Goodson could get it done in his offense.

Holmgren- As I remember he’s always used a potent air attack to set up the run. Yeah, it goes against the personell we have now, but if we’re changing coaches don’t we want that?

Cowher- I admire Bill Cowher’s fire, I really do… as for giving him credit. Yes, he’s a good head coach. But, the stats speak for themselves.

Cowher with LeBeau: 55-25 (.687) 1 Superbowl, 1 SB appearance, 1 AFC Championship loss, 1 playoff appearance

Cowher without LeBeau: 62-49 (.558) 2 AFC Championship losses

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James Dator on Oct 27, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Finally.

Somebody who sees Cowher the same way I do.

I think we will see a young coordinator as a coach. I don’t think Richardson will bring in a big name.

by Scrantsj on Oct 27, 2009 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Shanahan

No thanks.

If we’re going to “restart” with a new QB and all, it’s much more likely we’re looking at a coordinator. No one is going to come back for a semi-rebuilding job.

Tony Pike

I think Pike is a great pick – would practically fall into Carolina’s lap in the 3rd round and already shows the ability to compete against Big East talent and win. Not to mention Cincy’s ability to move the ball. I’m all for it!!!

Regarding coaching changes; I would prefer the Cowher of Power or Shanahan over Holmgrem – how many rings did Seattle win???

Cowher: Defensive Personnel + D-Coordinator = DEFENSIVE POWERHOUSE!
(+ motivation for Peppers to stay in Carolina)
Shanahan: Smith + Williams + Steward + Pike = SB no doubt

by XenoFox on Oct 27, 2009 9:01 AM EDT reply actions

Welcome to the blog XenoFox

I find Pike intriguing. He is slender but a year on the sideline and in the weight room can change that.

+1

Of course, one of the the knocks on Flacco was that he was slender too.

Cowher won one ring, and that was with Dick Lebeau’s help. It was also after over a decade, when he finally decided to get serious about the QB position and draft Big Ben.

Shanahan has two rings true, but after that he made a long, downward slide. His recent drafting was terrible, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

I want neither of these asshats to coach our team. Do what others have said, being in a rising coordinator.

the draft

fox and marty has given away the upcoming first round draft choice. As dumb as one could think of, fox has now placed his job in Jakes hands. Bil Cower is the best choice for a replacement. i for one am thinking that now it has to happen before others want to bolt from the shinking ship called Jake.

by damann on Oct 27, 2009 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

Was trading the pick really that dumb?

People tend to overvalue 1st rounders and undervalue 2nd rounders.

Despite the QB situation you better believe the Panthers would be going DE with the 1st round pick in 2010 with Peppers likely leaving.

With how Everette Brown is playing (also given that he was projected as a 1st rounder in 2009) all it seems to me is we got 1st round talent for trading a 1st round pick and we don’t need to pay him 1st round money. We also got Mike Goodson in the deal.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James Dator on Oct 27, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

And with the depth at QB in this draft...

…we should be able to get a first round talent in the second. Remember, somebody always falls.

by Scrantsj on Oct 27, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d have to go with Cowher as head coach. True, his best time was spent with LeBeau but who’s to say we wouldn’t develop a Cowher/Meeks relationship similar to such. Besides, I’m sure Cowher would have no problem taking full advantage of Williams & Stewart.

Also, assuming Davidson gets the boot, best OC replacement?

I’ve got no comments to add to the QB debate as I’m not a huge fan of college ball, though I did state a while back that I’d ride James’ Bradford train being I have no opinions of my own. haha

Shanahan...

Just like Cowher didn’t do anything without Dick Lebeau, Shanahan never did anything without Elway. So, unless we get the next Elway in FA or the draft, getting Shanahan is pointless.

by BW Smith on Oct 28, 2009 12:08 PM EDT reply actions

Cowher without LeBeau: 62-49 (.558) 2 AFC Championship losses

Shanahan without Elway: 91-69 (.568) 3 playoff appearances, 1 AFC Championship loss.

Similar, but not quite the same. I don’t disagree with you, just for reference.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James Dator on Oct 28, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Very similar, indeed

Thanks for pulling the stats — I wasn’t sure what the exact record was without Elway, but it is good to have a point of reference.

by BW Smith on Oct 28, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

One win

That’s the difference, Cowher would in fact be a downgrade, but because of our dislike of Fox and need to see someone different in, Cowher seems like an upgrade.

by Flowing Willow on Oct 29, 2009 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Did Tony Dungy say he wanted to be done with coaching or just take a year or so off? Not sure if I’m confusing him with what Cowher said.. But I’d love to see Dungy especially since we have his D Coordinator other than that I think Meeks was a terrible hire.. I really can’t wait to see how they spend all the money J Pep’s departure is gonna free up. Recievers and a QB some O-Line depth and Veteren D-Line help lockup the young talent we have and we’re set..
