Help Needed At The Quarterback Position

For the past six weeks I have said that id John Fox gets Steve Smith involved then we would be ok. Last week we got our running game going and even though it didn't look like it at some points in the game we are still above average on the ground. But until we get a quarterback that can stay cool under pressure and not try to force throws that end in being intercepted. Then we are in trouble.

Star-divide

Jake Delhomme is starting to force every throw that he attempts. The only good thing that we can say about him is that he can hand the ball off to "Double Trouble". We have the receiving corp to be a great team on the ground and in the air. With Steve Smith, Muhsin Muhammad, Jeff King, Donte Rosario, and Gary Barnidge We should be able to spread the field even more for the running game. Today Smith had 6 catches for 99 yards. And between the tight ends we had nine catches for 135 yards. Barnidge with 3 catches for 77. Jake Delhomme threw to Steve Smith 5 more times added to his six. But one of those was tipped and picked off. His other interceptions were uglier than any of the previous ten that he had thrown.  He now leads the NFL in Interceptions with 13. When will John Fox realize it is time to go with a different option? Granted Matt Moore is not a long term solution and either Feeley. But we need to get something figured out. I have an idea....trade Jake and a draft pick or something for a first round pick and get a quarterback of the future. I mean we don't even need to trade. Git rid of Delhomme and grab a quarter back in the second round. I mean i can name three that will still be on the board in the second round that will be better than Delhomme at the start and if not then they can work there way to getting better. Because Delhomme is getting worse not better.Tony Pike From Cincinnati the kid is 6'6" and weighs 225, Jarrett Brown from West Virginia is6'4"  220, and Dan LeFevour from Central Michigan is 6'3" 226. My point is that these guys have each thrown for over 1,000 yard and the only one that has more than five interceptions is Jarrett Brown (6). But all of them are having the best years of their career and none of them blow it when the game is on the line. So dump Delhomme and get a quarterback for the future. There is nothing wrong with our wide receivers or tight ends. There is nothing wrong with our running game, and there is nothing wrong with our coaching. Our problem is the Quarterback.

Well that is all that I have. Tell me what you think.

I agree. I’ve always been a Jake fan…but this is getting ridiculous. Is this the same team that was one game away from the Superbowl last year? And we all know how that ended…..change ain’t always a bad thing!

Offensive play calling is a major problem as well, I mean when you know you have a quarterback thats been playing horribly and your facing a team that is one of the leagues top passing defenses, having just picked off Sanchez 6 times last week, there is absolutely no reason you shouldn’t be running it down their throats on the ground.

true

but you have to remember that Steve Smith was upset. He had 1 catch for 4 yards last week and John Fox is going to make sure that he keeps our biggest weapon happy. Yes they should have ran the ball a lot more but the Bills were ready for the run.

I was beginning to wonder if we were only throwing to prove to Smith he’s still an asset to the team. Now there were some really good throws that caught me off guard, better than a lot this season, but we still should have kept most of it on the ground.

how can you not blame coaching

the performance of our players are directly connected to the level of coaching…obviously Delhomme is playing poorly and should be replaced, but Davidson and Fox should receive a fair share of blame for their terrible play calling

by vitzeng on Oct 25, 2009 11:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

there are times when the play calling is just absolutely mind-boggling.

by EyeSack on Oct 25, 2009 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you can blame the coaching but at the same time when the coach calls a pass play you should be able to depend on your qb to complete the pass

And if the QB has proven himself as unreliable as has Jake, the coaching staff should take careful consideration into which plays they call.

I think they’re playing pin the finger on the play sheet and going with whatever comes up.

I don't think we can say anything about Matt Moore yet

except he deserves a chance to start a few games to see what we got.

+1

Matt Moore hasn’t proven anything yet.

He should get his shot, because we need to know just how urgently we need to pursue a new QB.

Things come in threes!

I fully agree with your thoughts on Jake Delhomme. I have been stating for three years he was not the QB to lead us to the big game and win. In New Orleans, he could not beat out Aaron Brooks. But here in Carolina he is Fox’s yes man. His play this year has made him a poster child for birth control and is the first part of our problem.

Second, Fox is a problem, so I disagree with your belief that coaching is not a problem. Yesterday against Buffalo was more proof of it. First half, pressure all over the QB. Second half he goes back with soft defense. If you review film of Fox over the last three years, you will find the percentages are he always calls the same plays in certain situations. RARELY will he deviate from that process.

Third problem is Peppers. I have always been a big fan of his until three years ago. He started taking plays off and was often being out ran by the QB. This year he is making the money and did nto start even playing until he got called out. Then yesterday went back to being AOL and THAT leaves us as fans SOL!

'He could not beat our Aaron Brooks. But here in Carolina he is Fox's yes man'

That is an incredibly loaded statement that not only forgets that the fanbase were begging Jim Haslett to bench Aaron Brooks for Jake Delhomme in 2002.

It also completely disregards that Delhomme made the Pro Bowl in 2004, and that prior to 2009 Jake was regarded league wide as a top 15 QB.

I think your comments are incredibly short sighted, particularily the statement inferring Jake Delhomme shouldn’t have been born. I know it was a bad day yesterday, and this season but that’s a little too much hyperbole for my liking.

i agree

i agree with james. i mean, i felt that jake had two horrible games last year, the raiders and lions games. i had no idea he would play so horribly in the playoffs. he’d clearly proven himself a winner for five years in carolina, and our style of play didn’t depend on him playing like drew brees. the cowboys won superbowls with aikman with a 80 qb rating and 15 – 20 passes a game. we had a similar formula and jake was winning. since 2003, we had a winning record every year with jake as the starter, and we would lose almost every game he didn’t play. then the cardinals game happened. the rest is history/common knowledge.

It is not loaded just facts . . .

The first year Jake was in Carolina, he did well because the NFL had no real film on him. He was still an unknown. Yes, there was chants in New Orleans as with every city for the backup to be a starter. But, it was not what happened. So here we go, stats but not going to do all the homework for you. In his career: 55 fumbles, 27 lost, 150 times he has been sacked, 1131 yards lost, 83.2 career QB rating, 119 TD’s 89 INT’s, Playoff stats: his first playoff was great 106.1 QB rating 6 TD’s 1 INT, his last two NFC Championship appearances, against Seattle 34.9 QB rating with THREE INT’S, 39.1 QB Rating against Arizona with SIX INT"S.

Now yes, his record as a starting quarterback is winning. But how many games were won by the defense? If you go back and research what he did against premium defenses he has always struggled. That is being nice to say the least. But as I stated, wanted to show I did not just “short sight” him. I just view him as a backup and not a starter. I just want a better quarterback in our backfield. But in reality, the Panthers just paid him a three year, ten million a year extention and they cannot take that back!

The league had film on Jake in 2004 (7th in passing yards, 12th in QB rating), when he went to the Probowl, and in 2005 when he was equally good (11th in passing yards, 12th in QB rating). Does that mean the other 20 QBs behind him those years were ‘backups’ too?

Before his injury in 2007 Jake was leading the league is passing, touchdowns and QB rating.

Also, sacks allowed isn’t a stat that is placed on a QB, it’s placed on the offensive line.

Furthermore, you’re QB rating stats are slanted, because you’re choosing to include the 1999 season in New Orleans when he only played 2 games.

No . . .

He had ONE great year. He deserved to go but there were others just as deserving. Again, you are not looking at his stats against the better teams. The film that was shown was how defenses learned he gets antsy when hit. QB ratings are what they use not what I prefer. I prefer looking at what a qb does against better team as a measure of how they actually perform. I like Jake as a person, but not as our starting QB. I do not now, and have not in the past felt he could take this team where it needs to go. So with that I will state that you and I will just have to agree to disagree!

Tell me Gene

How many games were won because Delhomme drove us down the field for the winning points? You completely disregard that in your argument. I’m all for pulling Delhomme if we need to, but up until the Arizona game no one was talking Jake as a weakness, then the aftermath of the game was just fanbole.

Feeley

I have always been for AJ Feeley in San Diego Miami in Philly and now in Carolina. Feeley has played big through out his career. In 2001 he went 4-1 (when Koy Detmer and Donovan Mcnabb were hurt) to take philly to the playoffs. I still remember that game when he almost overcame the perfect pats. He also played some great gaames in the preseason this year and he played some first string D on teams like da Pats He has thrown some INT’s but then again… Jake Delhomme… Nuff said and Matt Moore has never really showed me anything.
