26 days ago: Carolina Panthers' Jake Delhomme (17) looks up as he walks back to the huddle in the second half of an NFL football game against the Buffalo Bills in Charlotte, N.C., Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009. (AP Photo/Rick Havner)

The Buffalo Bills came into Charlotte and left with a gift-wrapped victory courtesy of  Panthers QB Jake Delhomme. I still can't come up with much to say about this game that doesn't lead back to Delhomme. All three of his INT's were the result of poor passes, in all cases the passes were overthrown, his signature error. If Delhomme is more careful with the ball the Bills put 6 points on the board today. Still enough for this impotent offense but that is not all Jake's fault. He is joined by OC Jeff Davidson who called a terrible game for the offense. Sure they did put up plenty of yards but I'm referring to some of the poor cales in key situations. The 4th down run up the middle that got stuffed comes to mind.

Here' some other quick thoughts on the game:

Star-divide

  • The Panthers special teams was again terrible. Two missed FG's, no return game, poor kick coverage and then the comeback killing fumble by PR Kenny Moore. I feel bad for Moore but crap...he had two shots at the ball and muffed it completely.
  • WR Steve Smith finally had a good game (6 for 99 yds) but still couldn't magically pull out a victory.
  • The defense played a good game, holding the Bills offense to 123 yards passing and 53 yards rushing. Yet when given short fields to defend after Delhomme INT's they couldn't come up with a big play of their own.
  • TE Gary Barnidge got his first significant playing time and finished with 3 catches for 77 yards, including a sweet 52 yard wheel play
  • RB Mike Goodson got his first professional carries (2 for 4 yds) but it was otherwise not worth mentioning.

There are more positives and negatives from this game but in the end it was the interceptions that kept the Panthers from a chance at winning this game. Thirteen interceptions is monumentally terrible and one has to wonder how in the world the Panthers could start Delhomme yet again this Sunday in Arizona. Which leads to this poll:

I loved the idea of going for it on 4th and one, especially with Stewart, but, seriously, straight up the middle? Were we trying to prove a point (and thus failed) or were we trying to out maneuver our opponents for the 1st down? I think the former is the answer, and the wrong answer. I was only able to follow this game through Yahoo!’s StatTracker (Stupid Florida broadcasts, stupid Miami) however it seemed to be that the entire game was spent trying to prove a point, that Delhomme could put yardage and points up through the air.

Well, they achieved both. Delhomme put up a lot of yardage for us, and a lot of points for the other team.

This is not the place for ego’s, the fans don’t want to see any points proven, we want to see games won, and right now, our best bet at accomplishing that is via the ground.

I’m sick to my stomach thinking of this coaching staff at the moment. All that they did today was prove a team need only show up to defeat us.

Jeff Davidson

Deserves to share the blame with Jake Delhomme on this one. Jake was directly responsible, but Davidson was indirectly responsible. Where was the imagination and creativity in our run game? Why did we put the ball in the air so many times? I understand that we need to get Steve Smith more involved, and we did. But we missed so many opportunities where he could have been used effectively instead of just stat padding.

The 4th and 1 call was just bad. I agree we should have gone for it, but there should have been an off-tackle run, or maybe even an end-around. The moment you put Stewie in the backfield on 4th and 1, the defense knows we are going to try and pound it up the gut. Why not fake the handoff and force the big pile but then give the ball off on a reverse or end-around to Smitty?

I voted Moore, not because I think he gives us the best chance to win but because the team needs to give him a shot before his confidence is totally eroded.

I mean, how long can you sit a young quarterback behind a guy that’s throwing INTs left and right before he starts to wonder just how little faith the coaching staff must have in him to prefer the guy that’s actively costing the team games in favor of giving him an opportunity? The Bills had the worst run defense in the NFL coming in, and they still managed to smother the Panther offense because they knew Delhomme had no chance to beat them.

If Moore (or Feeley, for that matter) is not the long term answer at quarterback, it’s better if the team finds out now rather than waiting out a lost season hoping for a turnaround, and hoping one of them turns into a stud next season when Jake can’t go any more.

My thoughts exactly...

at least they can determine what they have for the future of the franchise. Who knows, we could be pleasantly surprised. The problem…John Fox wanted to win this year to keep his job. There had to be another stinker of a game from Jake for Fox to make a change…this was it! Now is as good a time as any for change….let’s see if it happens.

The playoffs

are, at best, a longshot. Keeping a reeling Delhomme in the game isn’t going to solve anything. It’s not like he’s improving. He has the most interceptions in the league. Unfortunately, losing doesn’t get us a high draft pick (because we traded that away), but a high second round pick is still nice. If we’re gonna lose, we might as well do it with a young guy who could get better with playing time. Delhomme is past he point in his career where getting a couple starts makes him better than he was before. He’s reached his peak, and he’s well beyond that now.

Is it too much to ask for some coaches with common sense?

I hope the coaches take tomorrow off to think about the state of their team. They have barely won two games against teams that aren’t going to come anywhere close to the playoffs this year, and suddenly turned to the passing game in the 4th quarter when that is exactly the time the running game works out the best.

Jake Delhomme’s time is over. It’s been over for a while now. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. We will never be able to beat elite teams like the Giants, the Cardinals, and the Patriots with a guy playing like Delhomme at the QB position. Today we found out that we cannot even beat the Bills because of the presents he’ll give to the other team.

Both of his first interceptions were above the head of the WR’s, clearly uncatchable. Smith caught some heat for tipping the ball into the air on the 2nd INT, but watching film for the second time Byrd was in position to make the INT anyway. The Moore fumble was bad, but Jake Delhomme set us up for his mistake to mean so much anyway.

If John Fox cares about his job at all, he will give Moore the ball. Let’s see what the rookie has learned the last few years. He has the stronger arm, so let’s see if he can control it! Worst case scenario he goes out and throws 3 INT’s, but that’s not any worse than we get right now from Delhomme so no harm, no foul.

The bigger problem out of all of this is coaching. The players aren’t playing like they are truly motivated to win. If you recorded the game with DVR, watch the offensive linemen during the 2 minute drill. Poor Jake is screaming for the guys to get to the line of scrimmage, and they’re just trotting around like they’re goofing off in practice. They’ve also completely forgotten that they can spike the ball to stop the clock, which blew me away right there.

I don’t know what else to say to be honest. Another horrible game. Is anything else new?

The muffed punt

In high school, i used to wrestle in the heavyweight class, which meant that on occasion the match would be all tied up and the teams victory would come to rest on my shoulders. If I lost, the coach would always say to me and the team, “we had so many other matches we could have won to avoid being in this situation to begin with, so we should each shoulder the blame for losing.”

The same thing applies to kickers attempting game winning field goals, or in this case a fumble by an inexperienced punt returner. Had the offense done its job and put points on the board all game long, then this situation wouldn’t have rest on your shoulders.

by Tater596 on Oct 26, 2009 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you there.

Jeff Davidson called a horrible game. He gave up the running game in the 4th quarter and gave the ball to Jake Delhomme yet again, even though the Panthers had plenty of time to make it up the field and Jake Delhomme had already thrown two INT’s.

At the same time, it was still a one possession game. If the Panthers march it up the field and score, it’s a tie football game. Instead we give a free turnover to the other team, resulting in a field goal that put the game away for good.

Sad

3 of my favorite players take the hit for this game – Jake, Kasey & Moore. Reluctantly, it’s time to push the “reset” button. Goodbye Jake, Fox & staff. It’s time.

Sad in so many, many ways.

Jake has to sit.
Moore has to get his chance.
It would be insane to do otherwise.

There are many guys on this team who play their hearts out (Jake included) — for their sake, change has to come.

Where's James?

We need someone to straighten all us mindless Jake haters out. Delhomme is CLEARLY the best option at QB — he provides the best opportunity for the Panthers to win.

Since Jake had yet another horrific performance he must REALLY be due up for some good games, huh?

Trust me

There is no joy being taken in the horriffc start to this season.

It is, however, frustrating to see things play out like this when after the embarrassing home playoff loss last season it was becoming increasingly clear that the Panther’s chances of winning a Superbowl were diminishing with Delhomme as the QB. When no action was taken in the off-season (and considering the overly sympathetic comments made by Fox about Jake’s playoff performance), it was obvious that Jake would be the starter again this year. I assumed that Moore must be in the future plans of the team because they were not pursuing any other options at the QB position.

SO after the ridiculous Philly beat down to open the season, it has been monumentally painful to read the Delhomme supporting on this site. If only folks had opened their eyes up to reality sooner (john Fox in particular), maybe my team’s starting QB wouldn’t be playing on a level of historically pitiful proportions.

The only solace (or joy or whatever) i get from this miserable display is the hope that now the organization will no longer drag its feet in an effort to find a quality starting QB. If action is taken immediately, maybe the team’s talent will not be completely squandered this season and next.

by dudemanhey on Oct 26, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At the same time though...

People were calling for Delhomme’s head after Philly and he played pretty well against Atlanta.

It could have gone either way, and we’re still not guaranteed that if Moore of Feeley start next week they’ll do any better than Jake with Jeff Davidson’s playcalling, but, we can hope and the optimist in me hopes Matt Moore is the real deal so we can address other areas in the draft.

Isn't Feeley 2nd on the depth chart?

I’d rather see Moore because he has more potential to be a long term answer here, but I have a “feeley” that Fox would start Feeley over Moore.

Any thoughts about picking up Garcia?

Last check Moore is #2. He has been in the system for 3 yeras, it is his time to see what gives. From what I am reading, you don’t seem too convinced that Moore can give us a chance. Garcia…hmmm WCO but that is that kinda like what we are running now with the quick dumps and slants???

Is anyone convinced that Moore gives us a chance?

Maybe he could develop into a good QB. But it’s not like he has some stellar performance on his resume. Regardless, I don’t think Jake will ever lead this team anywhere ever again. So I’d rather see what Moore can do with the talent on this team.

If we are looking to the future, then Garcia is definitely not the answer, he’s 39 and will be 40 next year.

It's time to start Matt Moore

Though Gantt makes a good point with the next two games on the road, Delhomme might still start. But you can bet that unless he sparkles they better trot out a different QB at the next home game.

Per Steve Reed- Carolina Growl

I’ve always backed the idea of the Panthers sticking with Jake Delhomme because my thought process is he’s always given them the best chance to win, which is to say he’s better than the alternatives. After watching Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, I no longer believe that be true. Anything, right now, is better than tossing Delhomme out there against Arizona, even if it gives him a chance to exorcise his demons following that playoff loss this past January.

Delhomme is clearly lacking confidence and I’ve never seen him so discouraged after a press conference. (We’ll have the video up a little later.)

I can’t see how coach John Fox can look at his players this week and NOT make a change.

The Panthers need a spark and that has to come from someone other than Delhomme. I still don’t think Matt Moore or A.J. Feeley are better quarterbacks, but right now they’re different. And the Panthers need to find a way to change the karma of this football team.

It’s time to roll the dice and give Moore a shot.

We’ll find out more on Monday.

Let’s hope Fox says something and doesn’t leave fans twisting in the wind.

He's Shot His Wod Already ! ! ! ! !

I can’t take it anymore. It’s obvious extending this guys contract, especially after such a horrible showing in the playoffs last year, was “Remedial”….LOL He started the season off like he ended it, and folks still made excuses for him. I mean…..when are some of you really going to wake up. This guys has to be benched. He’s shot his wod already…….time to do the QB shuffle until we can find another one, and DRAFT a young kid we can groom next year.

It's Moore's time

Worst case scenario — Moore comes in and plays just as poorly as Jake, and we still lose. But, at least we will know if Moore is ready and able to lead this team next season.

Put Moore in for the rest of the year and give him game experience — we play a lot of good teams this year, he can learn a lot from these games.

It’s time to think long term, not 2009 season.

I think Jake is great

I think Jake is not the problem, our play calling is so preditable, every defence knows what we are going to do on offence by the way we line up ,our offence is the most preditable as the Saints were in the 90s with Carl Smith it is time to fire the whole coaching staff and bring in norv turner so he can keep @#$$%%ing this team up,that is how stupid our coaching staff is almost as bad as norv turner,.

I went to the game

And I must say it was pretty ugly when getting out. During the postgame show on the radio, the host said he saw a lot fans saying Delhomme should be benched, gone, let go, etc.

Here’s my problem, it’s still kind of difficult to say Jake was the main reason the Panthers lost Sunday. I saw the game from the stadium and while he did throw three picks (two of course turned into 14), the OC did draw up a horrible gameplan going in. Like the guys on the radio show said, Jake was told to throw the ball 40+ times. God knows why when you’re tied going into yesterday’s game with lead in interceptions thrown. Delhomme just isn’t one of those qbs where the team’s chances of winning improve when he has the ball in his hand that much (atleast not anymore it seems.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the special teams was again atrocious from start to finish. I was listening to the radio show concerning that and they said that Carolina averaged near the 20 yard line on each drive they had the ball. I’m sorry, but when you have such a one-dimensional offense like Carolina’s, that does not help anyone on offense including Jake. Also keep in mind that Buffalo’s average starting point was I think between the 30 and 35 yard line.

While watching the game in person, I did thought the defense was not as aggressive as in week’s past. Yes I saw Fitzpatrick get flushed out of the pocket here and there, but the corners again seemed to have went to their old tricks, giving the opposing receiver 10 yards of space (basically afraid to get burned). Then I see Gamble getting toasted on a simple out route where Evans probably would of scored had the ball not been underthrown.

One last thing, I was not too impressed with Jordan Gross again. He, like Gamble is getting paid to play like one of the premier players that play their respective positions yet have not lived up to the billing yet. Yes, Schobel is a very underrated defense end but I was seeing others beside him constantly putting pressure on Jake.

Bottomline, that game was probably one of the toughest games I have ever watched the Panthers play. Biased or not, the Bills were and are not the better of the two, it was really just Carolina beating themselves.

I was at game as well...

and the gentleman sitting me behind me told me that we works out with several members from the team and he was told that Chris Gamble is the biggest pot head on the whole team..will never be a shut down corner b/c he never studies the film or put in enough effort..

but other than that it was just awful watching Jake play in person…I know play calling was horrible( other fans in stands knew what we were gonna do before the play was called that’s how predictable we were on passing plays ) but at the same time Jake missed lots of open WR’s…they were wide open but he just couldn’t get them the ball..

Sounds like a complete blowhard to me...

isn’t it always those guys who ‘work out with the team’ or ‘have a cousin on the team’ or ‘played high school ball with someone on the team’.

As for Gamble being a pothead… off-season, who knows… but if he smokes during the regular season he must have a horseshoe lodged up his rear end if he’s avoided 5 years of in season drug tests.

Gamble is a good CB, not a great one. Truth is, the NFL has become so WR friendly there really aren’t that many legitimate, shut-down corners anymore, not like there used to be. I can only think of scant few:
- Nnamdi Asomugha
- Darelle Revis
- Asante Samuel
- Champ Bailey
- Leon Hall (possibly)

Most corners have become containment corners

The spread has become so widespread that all you can do is contain them. A ball-hawking safety has become more valuable than a shutdown corner.

Damning with Faint Praise

I fell that y’all are beating up on the OC entirely too much …. OK – Was gonna make a joke about how the I-formation/two TE right with Flametta going in motion to become the fourth receiver was a stroke of genius, particularly given Jake’s inability to hit a WR, but then a 2-inch wolf spider dropped off the ceiling next to my keyboard, and I decided that there was not enough karma in the world…..
