Bills vs. Panthers game Day Open Thread
Buffalo Bills at Carolina Panthers, Oct 25, 2009 4:05 PM EDT
Alright Panther fans, it is that time on a given Sunday and we have a Panther match-up before us. I realize we are a 4pm game today (not sure why) but thought I would go ahead and start the open thread so we can discuss the early games.
I also realize we are favored in this game (-7) and the Panthers better not get caught looking at next Sunday. They are prone to turnovers and dumb mistakes so any team in this league can hang with the team.
That's not what I'm expecting though. The Panthers will hopefully bring a running game with a few wrinkles to keep the Bills off balance. We have some injuries to worry about starting with WLB Thomas Davis. If he can't go then James Anderson has some big shoes to fill as Davis has played lights out this season.
The Panthers in turn must contain RB Fred Jackson. Jackson is easily the Bills most explosive player so far this season though many expected more from Terrell Ownes this season. Owens could finally break out if back-up Ryan Fitzpatrick has a career day (not likely).
Let's hear from you Panther fans. I'll post the inactives when they are announced.
The Is now an Open Thread!
Update: LB Thomas David is out and Landon Johnson is getting the start.

How about this quote from Smitty - Hat Tip to bigdavis
"There are some negative implications if something doesn’t go right," Smith admitted. "If you run your mouth, and then you drop every ball for the next 10 games, then whose fault is it? That’s the confidence a receiver has. I’m going to ask or demand something, well then you’ve got to fulfill the request."
Mostly, Smith’s able to laugh about it now, knowing that the people who don’t like him probably never will. The chip on his shoulder’s still there, and he uses every slight — real or imagined — as fuel to his fire.
"Whatever," he said with a laugh. "Draw your conclusions, but come out on Sunday and line up, and see how well you do against the little punk."
Ha ha…Smitty is still King of the cocky quote, and that was another good one!

That's the same attitude that Panther fans love...
But other team’s fans hate! I can’t get enough of it. Now if he does come out today and drop a few key passes, then he will look like a moron. If he has a big game however, he has everybody’s attention. I hope for the latter, so Arz next week has something else to worry about other than just stopping the run.

Anyway Good Luck today Panthers!

Have a great game folks!

they have Freeman as their future QB. I wonder what it would cost to try and pry Josh Johnson from them…

Well, he’s fumble prone and just threw a pick 6 to start the NE game. Doesn’t seem too good a pick up.

That's kinda my point
Everybody’s tired of Jake’s turnovers, so who do they look to as a potential replacement? QBs just as bad or worse at turning the ball over. It amuses me to no end.

I love Jake, but I've seen enough wobbly passes to last me a lifetime.
I don’t want a cannon for an arm, I was a friggin’ sniper rifle. A tight, accurate spiral from someone who stands in the pocket and moves just enough to set his feet and make the play.
Watch a team like the Browns trade for Johnson, word is Mangini is hot to trot for a wildcat in Cleveland (provided he’s still there).

Why I love Sundays...
We’re like a family, we may bicker, we may fight for the other 6 days of the week. We verbally hit each other by calling our brothers ‘homers’, ‘haters’, ‘lovers’ or ‘naive’. We cool down, sometimes we’re put in time out…
But when Sunday rolls around we gather at this Sunday dinner table of an open thread. We’re no longer homers, haters or lovers… now, we’re all Panther fans. At this time we forget about who sucked the week before, and who played great. For now, we gather together as Panther fans hoping to see our team succeed. Waiting for that great moment following a touchdown where 15 posts hit simultaniously.
So, here’s hoping we see a lot of those today!

if we change QB's, then then the season is already over...
i don’t know if anyone we have is better…which is realli sad
We could have gained a game on the Falcons and Saints
pathetic
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
As horrible a mistake as it was.
I feel bad for Kenny Moore… he’s crushed
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Kenny Moore is not to blame
ST in general has been poor and Jake well…to be frank I feel bad for him.
Honestly I have no hope for the this season or next season…we can’t have a QB ready for a while unless we trade for an experienced QB
When you lose games because of turnovers
that, to me, says COACHING PROBLEMS.
What pisses me off the most
is the fact that the defense has been lights out all day long.
Jake and the ST unit lost this game — and if Fox can’t admit that Jake is the cause of this he has to be fired
and the offense was hung out to dry by Special Teams
A 2 phase fail
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Here's the part where Delhomme ices it
by throwing to smitty every play and giving the bills a free pick
Maybe
we can get Mike Mularkey from ATL to replace Fox. That would be nice.
how fitting
Jake Delhomme finishes the game with an INT.
Epic fucking Fail.
See you guys tomorrow, where we can start off enough rousing round of bashing Jake and talking about how we miss last season.
Time for a change.
We’re not eliminated mathematically, but we are logically.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Yeah
It’s time to give Moore a shot — season’s over, especially with the way NO and ATL are playing, and we already lost the tie breakers to the Eagles and Cowboys for wild card spots
Thanks guys
This was my first thread (even though I came in really late) — I enjoyed it, except for the game result
There's only one way you can possibly lose a game
when you have 425 yards of offense and the other guys have 169. That’s by having 67 yards of penalties and 4 turnovers.
I think you're about to see it.
I have a feeling if Fox wont do it, Big Cat will force his hand.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
We need a new QB
I’m so tired of losing games due to offensive incompetence. Everytime we start a good drive JD gets picked and we lose. Its a horrible shame when the defense looks forward to playing against our passing game.
why did stewart only have 7 carries…. why the hell were we throwing it against the worst rush D in the league? please enlighten me
My changes.
Jake Delhomme: Moved from QB to OC… he can call plays better than Jeff Davidson, he just can’t make them.
Matt Moore: Starts vs. Arizona
Special Teams: Fire the coach, have Smitty punt return (only to fair catch, at least he CAN catch).
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
I have a feeling the offensive incompetence is more the fault of the head coach. Bad play calling has been around since before Davidson got here.
by SlayerGhaleon on Oct 25, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Delhomme has been given a fair shot
He played the first 6 games, and the team is 2-4, and he is responsible for losing 3 of those games. His time is up. Put Moore in.
Mike McCoy turned Kyle Orton into a top-10 QB and Denver into a top-tier team
once he got out from under John Fox’s thumb. What does that say?
AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Matt Moore will start next weekend. Jake has no accuracy on the ball anymore and we are trying to make chicken salad out of chicken @@#$.
Frustrating.
The OC should lose his job on this one and Delhomme needs to be benched.
the only way you lose this game is on turnovers, you know you have a liability at QB and a stud run game against a team thats weak on the run…. and the OC puts the game in the hands of our liabilty. I never thought I would ay this this early in the season, but I now agree Delhomme needs to be benched in the interest of the 80% of this team is playing good enough to win. Davidson really should be fired also but its the lethal combination of him & Delhomme that are killing this team.
at the very least, fire Davidson
since Fox seems so loyal to Delhomme
This is gross. Absolutely pathetic.
Once again the Panthers abandon the rushing game early in the football game, and pass the ball again and again.
14 points off turnovers. Despicable.
Three turnovers on inflated Jake statistics.
Danny Crossman still has his job in spite of special teams failing again, and again, and again.
How can we expect to win against the Cardinals next week if we can’t even beat the Bills? Run the ball! RUN IT! Run the F****** football and quit giving Jake Delhomme the ball to throw 20 yards down the field!
My sole consolation is that I was starting the Bills on my fantasy. My subconscious predicted this would happen! God damnet!
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I'm almost convinced that Ronnie Brown is more accurate at wildcat than Delhomme at QB
i’m just saying… don’t throw me the stats or anything
Ronnie Brown
just completed like a 40 yard pass against NO but the receiver dropped it. Funny you should mention it.
Yaskinas at ESPN:
Hey, there’s no shame in losing to Buffalo. Especially when you’re at home.
Especially when you’re facing a quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. And most especially when you’ve got a chance to turn your whole season around.
No, I’m just kidding on all that. Carolina’s performance against Buffalo was so dismal that I truly believe it might have sealed the fate of coach John Fox. I’m totally speculating here, but I think Fox could be out at the end of the season — maybe even sooner.
It’s rare to make changes at this point in the season and I think Jerry Richardson would be very hesitant to pull the plug now. That said, I’m not totally ruling out the possibility that Richardson might make a move.
This loss was beyond bad and it makes you wonder if players still have much faith in Fox. Heck, this is just my gut feeling (although it’s based on some things I saw and heard back when I covered the Panthers regularly), but I don’t think Richardson’s been totally sold on Fox for two or three years now.
Richardson couldn’t fire Fox back in 2007 when quarterback Jake Delhomme was out for most of the season and Fox was telling anyone who will listen that it’s impossible to win without your quarterback. Richardson couldn’t fire Fox last season when the Panthers choked and lost a home game to Arizona because the coach went 12-4 in the regular season.
But Richardson could fire Fox now or later in what’s shaping up to be a horrible season and no one would bat an eye. Maybe Fox makes it through the season, but I think you’ll be able to point to today as his real demise.
Makes sense.
I just don’t know who in the organization can step up and be interim HC.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
They can bring someone in from outside
The Redskins brought in a consultant and his second week on the job they told Jim Zorn he can either be fired or give up play calling to the consultant.
Yeah
But Fox isn’t calling the plays, that’s the difference.
I think Jerry Richardson should call in some favors and have Bill Parcells come in and audit the team.
His contract is up with Miami this season.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Gotcha.
I say Jake!
Seriously, in the hurry up he calls plays well. He just cant make them
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
They’d probably go with one of the coordinators.

That's encouraging. ((Sarcasm))
Then again, what if someone could emerge, and take the Panthers from the rubble and rise them to the top.
It could happen. Don’t forget all of the FA coaches out there.
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I wouldn’t object to Meeks being the head coach. He’s been looking for a head coaching job, and the defense has been playing inspired football.
by SlayerGhaleon on Oct 25, 2009 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Honestly? I get the feeling the offensive play calling isn’t on Davidson. We had to put up with this kinda thing when Henning was around.
by SlayerGhaleon on Oct 25, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions
In the end, Fox calls the plays.
If Davidson is making the bad playcalling, John Fox should overrule him and be a leader.
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Even Henning ran the ball more than he passed, his plays were just vanilla and boring under Fox.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Well, that’s one of the complaints about the play calling now.
I just can’t consider firing Davidson right now until we get definitive proof the play calling is on him. His run blocking schemes have been dynamite.

I like Meeks...
I just don’t know if the team is ready for the defense to be handed off to a new person.

The offense is playing terribly uninspired.
Did you see how slow they made it up to the line during the ‘hurry up’ offense? You’d think they were performing a deathmarch.

It is time to call Bill Cowher
I hate change in this league, but we are SO behind the eightball with future draft picks we need to create a new foundation.
Bill Cowher historically sucks without Dick LeBeau.
I’d rather an HC who doesn’t need an all world co-ordinator to help him along.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Why?
Bill Cowher is the same kind of coach Fox is, except that he yells a lot more.
by SlayerGhaleon on Oct 25, 2009 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions
They also had Dick Lebeau to carry them while Cowher fumbled around on offense with mediocre QBs.
by SlayerGhaleon on Oct 25, 2009 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions
He may have fumbled
but they made the playoffs many times. Oh, they also have a super bowl win to boot.
MAybe that is what we need.
I little more yelling. Clearly something is not getting across them.
I'm not going to go that far, as I am wholly thankful and appreciative for Jake getting this team further in the past than any QB.
But, something has happened to him. Maybe it’s his confidence, maybe it’s his ability. But we do need a change.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
My suspicion is that the surgery did change his mechanics.
He is dead on short but when he throws long his raises up from his back foot and the ball rises. All of his interceptions are based on a pass higher to the intended target. He even threw Rossario on a screen behind him instaed of floating it to lead him.
Jake has no confidence. The heat is being turned up and he is not responding.
Anyone can make the passes that Jake is making.
Throws to the RB with no pressure on him? No problem. But get 15-20 yards down the field? All of his balls are high. Even when he was a successful QB, it’s always been a problem with him.
Time for a change.
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
I would agree.
In baseball sometimes Tommy John surgery makes the elbow tighter, and pitchers throw harder than they did before the surgery.
I am beginning to believe this happened to Jake. Sometimes he’s over compensating for the strength and underthrowing… other times he’s not compensating enough and overthrowing.
Regardless, it means he’s done.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Not to mention he’s a totally awesome person.
I agree we need a change, but I refuse to badmouth Jake.
by SlayerGhaleon on Oct 25, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions
he's from Michigan...i'm proud of his success..
not to mention i’d like to see NO lose
This team has a solid foundation ....
special teams can be fixed in a season, bad coaching can be fixed in a season, the question is what do you do at QB next season? Go with a young prospect or bring in a veteran FA and try to win. Right now I say you give Moore a shot to salvage something this season and also see what he’s got.
I agree
It is time to incorporate Moore as the next franchise quarterback or use him for trade bait in the offseason.
I agree
but how are we ever going to find out? There was a reason Dallas squandered him.
I'm not saying don't play him and make sure,
but we can’t count on him to suddenly become a great QB.
No sure about AJ
but he has the experience to win and play.
Look up Matt Moores winning percentage as a starting QB. Is it 60 or 75%
What do you call the game against Buffalo today? difficult?
Doesn’t matter. A pro game is a pro game.
he beat a good seattle team, a good tampa team ( that one didnt matter) but we should have beaten the dallas cowboys
that was the absolute worst officiating i have ever seen in sports
by carolinabrave89 on Oct 25, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions
That good Seattle team was playing the game in their sleep. They were so far ahead in their division the game didn’t matter to them.
by SlayerGhaleon on Oct 25, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions
3 starts skews Matt Moore’s numbers so much that you can’t count that.
It’s like how a QB rating only starts when a QB has attempted 6 passes.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
I understand but......
How are we ever going to know?
Let Jake continue to squander our hopes of a win, or allow us the hope that we may actually have a chance.
Jake is averaging over 2 INT per game. name me a team that would allow him to play?
I agree that we need to start Moore
I just don’t agree with using his win percentage as an argument to start him.
Moore is younger, and shows more promise than AJ Feeley. It makes no sense for the rebuilding of the passing offense to start Felley.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Point taken on winning percentage, but is it a trend or anomaly?
Let’s find out. Shall we?
yea...
this really makes me not like the Panthers front office….
why give a long contract to someone after a playoff performance like that… whether or not at that time the game against arizona was going to be a one-time fluke, the move didn’t make sense
Two reasons:
1) To save money so they could sign other players this year.
2) They had no reason to believe that that game was anything other than an anomaly.
by SlayerGhaleon on Oct 25, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions
1) Too true. Peppers really tied the Panthers hands here.
2) Jake had plenty of horrid games last year (4 picks @ Oakland for instance). This was a stupid management decision plain and simple.
2 – He had really bad games in prior seasons too. Like I said, logic would dictate it was nothing but an anomaly.
by SlayerGhaleon on Oct 25, 2009 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions
That I agree with. He was a solid starter for years and a stand up guy. He really didn’t deserve to go out like this.
by SlayerGhaleon on Oct 25, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions
I really can’t disagree more. Last year Jake had 15 TDs (lowest TD total as a Panther) and 12 INTs. This is the worst ratio of his career with the Panthers and his 3rd worst QB rating (and below his career avg.). All the caution signs were there for management if they chose to pay attention.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t have resigned Jake with what we knew then, however it should have been a 3 year deal, and especially so considering Jake’s age.
I live in the Philly area
and am very familiar with Feeley and don’t want to see him as a starter.
He is a serviceable back up but also a big time turnover machine.
I hope they’ll give Moore a shot this season to see what he’s got as a starter.
i cant watch
I won’t watch until Jake is benched. Why waste time when I already know the outcome? On the other hand maybe if he lights up the Cardinals it will reverse the curse…..lol yeah right! I can understand the D quiting after the 3rd quarter. Why force a 3 and out when Jake is gonna give it right back.
Thank goodness for Sunday night football
It helps wash the taste of Buffalo out of my mouth. :)
Charles Chandler:
For the first time after a game, Panthers coach John Fox wouldn’t rule out possibly changing quarterbacks. And Jake Delhomme, who threw three interceptions to raise his season total to 13, said he’s “no dummy” because he knows quarterback changing can happen when an offense is struggling.
just watched post game on nfl.com
jake reacted like he is gonna be benched maybe i will watch the cardinals game after all
Fox has to bench him or he would be judged incompetent himself
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Here's 2 reasons why Jake should be benched for AJ Feeley this week...
Panther fans, that’s what it feels like to have a half way decent QB. That’s what it feels like to score a TD. If Feeley isn’t announced the starter this week, I say we all boycott the game! Force Richardson’s pockets to make the change if Fox is not man enough to.

think of the guaranteed money the Panthers sunk into Jake over the offeseason

Oh, well let me provide a more rational reason
http://www.nfl.com/videos/carolina-panthers/09000d5d813b098a/Delhomme-s-3rd-INT
Let me guess, selectively picking out 22 turnovers out of a 6 game stretch is highly irrational.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
My point was that randomly taking two good plays out of a bad QB’s career and citing that as reasoning he is a better option than a QB who’s playing bad is highly irrational. I never said anything about keeping Jake as the starter.
Your attempt to discredit me through this tact is immature, and frankly, pathetic.

I don’t think any argument for starting and QB over Jake Delhomme is irrational. And any argument for not starting one of these guys over Jake is, well frankly, pathetic.

seriously…. i will not watch, buy tickets or merchandise as long as Jake remains starter. Speak with our wallets!!!!!
ST, I'm with you that its time for the change...
but as a longtime Eagle fan I’d rather see Matt Moore than Feeley.
Feeley can move the ball but has guts to a fault….and will force the ball when nothing is there.
The guy is a turnover machine.
It's the staffs fault that this is such a difficult decision
But they have to do something. Sign Garcia or start one of these jokers on the bench, but please no more Jake. Nobody has confidence in him anymore. And it is obvious by his press conference that even HE thinks he should be benched.
We need a Moore Feeley side by side comparison.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
The true question is 'who has a shot to be QB next season'
If we’re changing QB’s then we need to understand that this season is lost.
I do think it’s time to change QBs. Matt Moore represents an unpolished player who could potentially start.
A.J Feeley may be better now, but he has zero upside.
You have to start Moore to evaluate his long term ability prior to the draft. If he succeeds you can address WR in the 2nd round, if not, you address QB.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
I agree strongly
We need someone who can get the ball to Smith or someone who can take the heat off of him.
But the point is that Jake is one of the main reasons we are losing
Whether we still have a shot or not, Jake is losing us games. If Feeley or Moore get pressured and turn the ball over then oh well, we are in the same position we are with Jake. But just maybe one of them can hit an open receiver in stride, without over throwing him for a INT… just maybe. Let’s take that chance because the season IS over with Jake as QB.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Man, I hesitate for even posting this comment. I know it exposes me for the moonbat that I am, but I want to see the change now, because I want to see whoever comes in to have an opportunity to miraculously save the season- god willing. I feel bad for Jake, he’s the kind of class guy I love to root for, but its time to make the move.
I wouldn't say the season is lost yet.
Granted, the fat lady is warming up. But, the fact of the matter is that John Fox can and will hold talent back on the Depth chart and not even care. He will do it simply because the player in front of him is a veteran. Remember all those years that Foster started in front of Williams? That was classic John Fox.
This is a long shot I know, but it may be that Matt Moore is the next Peyton Manning on our roster and we don’t even know it. It’s a long shot I know, but weirder things have happened.
We have a pretty good defense right now, and if we could just get an AVERAGE passing game to take eight man fronts out of the equation then our running game could take off. Let’s not call in the vultures till we know what Moore has to offer.
Let’s say that Matt Moore comes out and gives us a good game against the Cardinals weak pass defense. He doesn’t even have to do much, just not turn the ball over and get the ball to Smith, Rosario, and Moose and maybe get one touchdown. The running game comes together and puts up a lot of yardage, and suddenly Matt Moore is a hero.
It will provide the players a banner to rally around, and we might be in position for a long winning streak.

He knows
He should , He’s a stand up guy. Its not an attack on him as a person. The look on his face after the first one told the story.
Its upsetting to me to see this happening to him, and I’ve stuck by him for longer than most. But when it’s time, it’s time
It's time, It's time!
I supported the guy up until Arizona. And even though I didn’t support him this year, something inside me still wanted him to pull it off. He’s a great guy, and has been apart of great Panther memories.
But when you have no Superbowl ring, and are not a super star QB, then you just can’t have but so many passes. He has had more than a fair share and he’s not getting it done.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Do we really have to draft a qb?
aren’t people like jason campbell and chad pennington going to be FA… even though campbell isn’t very good, it may just be that he doesn’t fit in the offense
frankly, I’d like to see our 2nd round draft pick used on a WR since i have little faith in the panthers building rookie qb’s…
