"Panthers agreed to re-sign DT Sunny Harris to practice squad. Pittsburgh offered the same, but he chose to stay here. Have to cut one now."

Good for Harris.
Well done on his part. At the same time, it makes sense for him because he’s seeking to get a starting job, and the Panthers offer him the best chance.

Are we stocking up on DT's or what?
Next preseason we will have Kemo, Lewis, Hayden, Irvin, Leonard, Burton, Thomas? and Harris competing. It doesn’t help now but at least the future looks brighter at DT.

Absolutely
If the long term plan is to try and solidify the line and return in to 2003 form, then I’m very happy with that.

Hate to temper the enthusiasm...
But in that group only Lewis and Irvin were drafted on the first day, and both Kemo and Lewis are getting old. I hope SOMEONE in that group develops but I won’t be surprised if they didn’t.

Hmm....
It’s the Bye Week. 3-4 Defense?

Nope
We still don’t have the correct personnel, and even if we did, two weeks is not enough time to learn a completely different scheme.

I agree that there's not enough time to move to a 3-4... but I think we do have the personnel should the team want to.
OLB: Peppers
ILB: Beason
ILB: Connor
OLB: Davis
DE: Lewis
DT: Thomas
DE: Brayton
Yeah, that’s alot of assumption on my part that Hollis Thomas can hold his own in the middle… but I think it’s definately attainable with our current personnel.
Then, next season, should we make the move (providing Peppers is gone) Everette Brown can move into the vacated OLB slot.

I like that lineup...
…and I think it would work. (But not with Meeks, probably)

We'd have to fire Meeks yes
I would love an aggressive 3-4, but an aggressive 4-3 would work pretty good too, and doesn’t require the rosterbation. One main problem I have with the switch is what happens to Jon Beason. He’s small even for a 4-3 MLB, in the 3-4 he’ll be required to take on more blocks. Does anyone remember Vilma with the Jets? It’s the same situation here with Beason if we switch to the 3-4. Also, what about our secondary, do we have the right type of players for a 3-4 secondary?

On Beason’s size: Patrick Willis is only 1 inch taller and 3 lbs heavier, and he’s been thriving in Singletary’s 3-4… so I think Beason could adapt.
However, I think you’re 100% correct raising questions about our secondary… I don’t know if we have the players needed.
The teams that run the 3-4 most effectively have one thing in common, a truly dominant safety. The Ravens have Ed Reed, the Steelers have Troy Polamalu, the Chargers have Eric Weddle, the list goes one. Can we hold Chris Harris in this regard? Perhaps… but I honestly don’t know.
