Special thanks to our friends at Arrowhead Pride for breaking the story (by way of KCChiefs.com). It hasn't even appeared on ESPN yet.

Tyler was a 3rd round draft pick in 2007 who has recorded 24 tackles and no sacks thus far in 2009, and finished the 2008 season with 53 tackles.

Star-divide

He's on the smaller side for a DT at 6-2, 306lbs, but he's a local boy, hailing from Fayetteville, NC coming out of NC State.

The Panthers traded a 2010 5th round pick to secure the services of Tyler. This continues the evolution of the Panthers' defense under Ron Meeks moving to a smaller, faster line.

Tyler is currently 14th in the NFL in tackles by a defensive lineman. For reference, the highest rated Panther is Julius Peppers at 18th. Tyler was a fan favorite in KC, and their starting NT. His ability to hold his own in the middle should serve us well for the rest of the season.

Really appreciate it... thank you

lol... thanks for the links.

Best of luck to the Chiefs in 2009, you guys pulled out a good win yesterday and I know you’ll be a factor soon, just need a couple more drafts to solidify that team.

Scott Pioli definitely helps your cause.

Think of the time and money saved!

By trading away their entire 2010 draft, the Panthers can save a boatload of money and time on travel for scouting, Combine, Pro Days, Rookie Camp, etc.

tank

2nd leading dline tackler on the Chiefs with 20 solo and 2 assists. 14th on the league in tackles He’s tied for 3rd in the league for SOLO tackles for a d-lineman, Marcus Stroud with 25 , Jarred Allen with 22, and trent cole with 20. Stroud is in his 9th season, Allen is in his 6th, Trents in his 5th…Just for reference Tank is in his 3rd season. Given the production he’s had in limited time, and being so young, I guess I dont get it. I really don’t get it. Tanks not the only answer to an ailing defense, but the guys getting to the ball and he’s young….a 5th roud pick? seems like pioli got hosed

by rdc on Oct 19, 2009 10:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't get it either

5th round picks usually take so long to develop, and often don’t amount to anything. Why trade a productive player for that?

It doesn't make sense

as a 5th doesn’t seem like much for a former 3rd round pick. Maybe he doesn’t fit the system or he has some unknown baggage. For only a 3rd year player, #4 in tackles and #2 on the Chiefs d-line. Seems like a no brainer for the Panthers. Geez, how deep are we going to be at DT next TC?

I’m excited to see the kid get in the rotation.

Not exactly

He’s not a good 3-4 NT, but he can occupy 2 blockers well in the 4-3, which means he’s well suited for NT in our scheme. He’s definitely not a pass rusher, but he’s probably more mobile than Kemo.

Because the new staff didn't like him.

He lost his starting job after week two, and Haley called him out in the press.

Coming from a Chiefs fan, I’m going to give you two words why tackles is an overrated statistic. Bernard Pollard. The ex Chief will pile up the tackles, while giving up huge gains looking for the big hit, and always playing out of position. The reason why the Chiefs traded Tyler to you for a 5th round pick is because Tyler was basically handed the starting NT job, and still lost it to Ron Edwards. Coach Haley has waited patiently for Tyler to exhibit a mean streak, and it never happened. That’s why Tyler lost his starting job, and that is why he is not cut out for NT. The good news is, Haley thinks he’s a real nice guy. That said, just because Tyler cannot cut it at NT doesn’t mean he can’t as a DT and I guess we will have to see if that is the case.

Grats on the steal Panthers

Tank is a playa

Takes naps in boring meetings though, which is probably why they dumped him. Tyler also tackled people, which is a no-no in Kansas City.

by WarWolf on Oct 19, 2009 11:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah its a no no in Carolina too I heard...

I do hope he makes it though. No honestly, he is a solid back up. He didnt fit what the Chiefs were doing though. He will do much better in the 4-3 defense then he would do in the 3-4. He did good getting penetration and getting after the QB. I dont know why Pioli would trade him unless they have someone else in mind to pick up either in a trade or off waivers. Will see, Maybe tank came crying to Pioli about being home sick.

Glad to see another big DT picked up, hope he fits in with us well but, seriously, where are we possibly going to get enough cake for all of these guys? We cant promise a slice of cake per every tackle if we don’t have enough cake!

by D-Ranged1 on Oct 19, 2009 11:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

im okay with this, even though our draft is going to be short once again.

We dealt a 5th round pick for a very young guy, who has made an impact on his team. From the scouting reports I’ve read, as well as the comments from chiefts fans, it seems he just wasn’t a fit at NT in a 3-4 defense. That said, in a 4-3 Defense, he just has to maintain a gap assignment, and he appears to be a good tackler.

I think the Panthers made a real good move here. 5th round picks are usually projects… to get a guy who can help us immediately, and someone who is just in the dawn on his career should be lauded as an excellent move. So what if we miss out on the 5th round… Getting a young guy like this (who has already proven he is not a bust) is way better than most any 5th round pick you are going to find.

I am encouraged by our activity prior to the trade deadline, I wouldnt be surprised if we made another big move before it is up. Kudos to the front office.

its obvious now that Furney is still desperate to win this season. There is no next season in their view I bet, hence the disregard for trading next years picks.

5th rounder for an established DT? What's wrong with that?

I think it’s a great move. A lot of 5th rounders don’t pan out.

We’ve now got a great stable of effective, rotational DTs, whereas just a month ago, we were strapped with Nick (oops) Hayden. Our run defense, thanks to this move, along with Hollis Thomas, Louis Leonard, Damione Lewis, Antwon Burton, and Ma’ake Kemoeatu, is solid. We made good personnel moves to pick up Tyler and Thomas, who fit well in our 4-3, after they were not fits in the 3-4’s their previous teams now use.

Good point about training camp

I meant solid for next year, but didn’t specify that.

However, we’ve now got a very viable backup/alternate for Hollis Thomas to play the zero gap. Hollis is great, but can’t handle all the snaps on running plays.

They're making the team better

Kansas City, Tampa Bay and Oakland are all stockpiling picks for the next draft in their rebuilding years, and we’re already built. We will need help at three positions this offseason—WR, QB, and DT. Even if we lose Peppers we still have quality talent and depth at DE.

Now with a 5th round pick we get a better DT that will play this year than we probably could have nabbed anywhere but in the second round. He doesn’t fit the 3-4, but he plays well in the 4-3 and is young and strong. He still needs to develop lower body strength, and he needs more of a win streak. With that said, he’s already proven that he can play in this league.

For reference, here are the fifth round picks under Fox/Hurney:
2009: Duke Robinson
2008: Gary Barnidge
2007: Dante Rosario
2006: Jeff King
2005: Adam Seward/Geoff Hangartner
2004: Drew Carter
2003: Kindal Moorehead
0220: Randy Fasani/Kyle Johnson

King and Hangartner became starters, Rosario looks good at times. The rest are out of the league or in a holding pattern. Tyler will probably start at least one game this year (I don’t expect Thomas to stay healthy), and will certainly be a solid rotational player. And he’s 23, while Kemo is 32.

The bottom line is that we just got high quality depth for a cheap pick that probably wouldn’t have helped us for years. This isn’t about saving anyone’s job, this is just a good move.

Some info on Tank

DeMarcus “Tank” Tyler was drafted in the third round, one spot ahead of our own Charles Johnson, by the Chiefs to play essentially the same NT position in a 4-3 that we require. He was the strongest lineman in the draft as measured by bench press, putting up 42 reps, and he had 2 more reps disqualified because they didn’t come down far enough on his chest. (FYI, Ryan Kalil had 34 that same year).

He was the fourth starter on NC State’s best-in-the-nation 2005 defensive line alongside first round selections Mario Williams (Texans), Manny Lawson (49ers) and John McCargo (Bills). He had a fantastic senior year in 2006, the only consistently great defensive player on a disappointing defense.

So, the man’s strong. Real big, real strong. And, James, I’m not sure where that number comes from, but if he’s 306lbs, I’ll eat my tuque.

All of that being said, clearly I’m a fan of this move, and my guess (having watched exactly zero Chiefs snaps this year and last, except the Carolina game) is that Tank wasn’t a fit for the 3-4 nose. And we know even from Ma’ake’s move down here from Baltimore, moving between those schemes can take some time.

So welcome home, Tank. Welcome home.

His bench press mark was at the time a combine record.

by MichaelProcton on Oct 21, 2009 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it was merely the best that year.

The record was, if I rememer correctly (and I’m writing this on my phone, so I can’t fact-check like I normally would), set in 1999 or thereabouts by someone you’ve never heard of from Eastern Kentucky, and it was 54 reps.

That said, people in the press “say” things all the time like “it’s a record for the bench press” or “Philip Rivers never lost a bowl game” without checking to see if it’s true. It’s a whole lot easier to read a press release from the school (thanks Annabelle Vaughn) or from an agent than to look things up yourself.

Not a crack at you, MP. More complaining about Peter King-style “journalists”.

The PANTERS HAVE A NCSTATE PLAYER NOW?!?!

ah hell… the world is ending!!!!

=) bout mf’ing time!!

Tank is going to fit into the 4-3 line up MUCH better then the 3-4. He is now Kemo… but he is a good player.

by packpigskinfan25 on Oct 20, 2009 12:52 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He may be BETTER than Kemo

Kemo’s injury put us in a hole with no run-stopper, and it cost us dearly, going back to the loss last year vs NYG. But let’s face it; Kemo was no all-star, just a big body, and a replaceable part, if you will — now that part’s been replaced.

Plus Tyler’s 6 years younger than Kemo, and his stat line compares well. He’s never had a sack in his 2 years, but then Kemo hasn’t had one since 2005. The only year you can compare them, 2008, Tyler logged 29 solo tackles and 12 assists, total 41 — Kemo had 31 solo and 5 assists, total 36 — though to be fair, those were in 14 games, before he was hurt.

Although Tyler’s much lighter, he shows to be as effective, and has many more years left in his tank than Kemo, who’s now damaged goods. Great use of a 5th round pick, IMO!

minor correction

Tyler’s 9 years younger than Kemo.

minor correction

Tyler was born 2/14/85
Kemo was born 1/10/79 (coincidentally, Hollis Thomas has same BD as Kemo, but 1/10/74.)

Kemoeatu was never replaceable.

If all he was was “just a big body,” Lonnie Harvey would have taken his spot from day one. Stats do not matter for DTs.

by MichaelProcton on Oct 21, 2009 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wow...

did YOU just say that “stats do not matter”!!??

Your right. DT stats are completely bogus. If they have a decent amount of sacks, but very few tackles- he is a pure pass rusher. If he has a lot of tackles and no sacks- he is a run D player or contain guy. If he has NO tackles and NO sacks he is a “body”.

Next years defensive line depth chart

Peppers/Brown/Taylor – Lewis/Irvin/Hayden – Kemo/Tyler/Leonard – Brayton/Johnson

Looks like we’re well set now. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kemo is done, those injuries are hard for big men to rebound from. Lewis is getting older and may be gone as well. So for a fifth rounder that there’s no guarantee on we got good depth and fixed a problem area on our team.

I’m Cyberjag, and I approve of this trade. :)

Tank Tyler is a genius grab for a 5th round pick.

He plays much better than his size indicates, and has the statistics to show for it. I can’t believe that fans are griping on Inside the Panthers and other blogs about this pickup though. Ask yourself, what would you rather have? A 5th round rookie who might be out of the league after one season, or a qualified starter at one of the most in-demand positions in the game?

I’d pick the latter every time.
