Brady Quinn seems to be available.. If you are the Panthers are you interested?

From Don Banks on SI.com:

Isn't it just logical that Brady Quinn should be the next Browns first-round pick to be traded? With next week's Oct. 20 trading deadline looming, why wouldn't Cleveland consider unloading the guy who apparently can't even replace a quarterback in Derek Anderson, who went 2 of 17 for 23 yards on Sunday in Buffalo?

It's not as if Browns head coach Eric Mangini hasn't made up his mind about Quinn at this point. Couldn't a team like Buffalo, or Jacksonville, or Oakland, or Washington, or Carolina, or St. Louis use an extra arm around?

Do you think the Carolina Panthers should be interested? What do you think as a possible look at for long range solution at QB? My feeling is that at Cleveland he has no weapons to gauge what kind of QB he could be. If the finances could be worked out and the draft pick was not a high one would you bite on Brady Quinn?

Mangini came out today and said they aren't looking to trade Quinn.

Meanwhile, Quinn’s house in Ohio mysteriously hits the market.

I’m all for making a deal for Quinn for a 3rd or 4th rounder… I’m not for accepting Quinn’s contract.

He would need to restructure that thing like crazy for any team to accept. Right now, he’s a David Carr player with a Kurt Warner contract.

He says it's because he can't afford the upkeep since he's a single guy.

It’s a five bedroom and five bath house.

Makes you wonder why the hell he bought it in the first place. Kids and their money these days…

He was replaced by Derek Anderson, the same Derek Anderson who remains the starter despite a two completion day last Sunday.

So no.

But...

Braylon Edwards gets out of Cleveland and is re-born. Maybe it’s the system ?

Nah. It's not the system.

It’s Mark Sanchez. He’s like “Oh my god! New toy! Hooray! :D”

i would take him

i would take quinn for a 4th rounder, maybe. and we have to know up front that he would restructure his contract. my question for anyone that we bring in is can they truly beat out matt moore. matt moore isn’t all that, but he’s shown some intangibles, poise, leadership, and good decision making. he hasn’t shown anything on the superstar level, but neither has quinn. i don’t want to bring in someone who will have a hard time beating out the guys we already have. do you think quinn is better than matt moore? why? i think he could be, but i don’t have any reason to think that, either. so i would love to see him compete with moore. either way, neither one beats out jake.

by usana_gaines on Oct 14, 2009 2:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Who would he replace?

The team made a commitment to AJ Feeley that he’d be around the rest of the season, and put McCown on IR in order to make that commitment. Matt Moore is currently our 2nd string QB, so where does Quinn fit in? I don’t see the team, despite the changing circumstances, going back on its word (they’re kind of sticklers about that whole ‘character’ thing).

But the point is that yes, I’d like to see anyone brouhgt in here who could possibly supplant Delhomme next season. I’d be fine with that move. Unfortunately, I don’t see a roster spot for him here.

by r3 on Oct 14, 2009 5:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How much do you want to bet Jerry Jones would throw us a 5th rounder for Matt Moore?

He’s still in love with Moore and I bet he’d make a deal.

All very hypothetical though.

Perhaps it is just my mood at the moment but I kind of feel bad for some of these guys. This entire season has been full of QB-talk and who should start if and/or when Delhomme relinquishes the position. Most, however, have flipped right past Moore (including myself, many times). I’ve never been impressed with the guy, but honestly, I haven’t seen him get a valid chance to prove himself.

I’m still hoping that Tampa drops Johnson when they feel that Freeman is ready.

Don't hate on me

But I kind of wanted to see the Panthers target J.P. Losman last offseason. He was a very underrated qb for Buffalo imo.

by RaffyGonzo on Oct 14, 2009 8:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It's over rated, not under rated.

For my money, he’s always been the douche who followed around Eli, Philip and Ben, trying to get talked into the first round conversation. Sure, he’s got a big arm, but none of the intangibles. He’s an immature, self-centered guy without leadership qualities or the necessary football IQ to perform at QB in this league.

we'll see, sort of

i think he led his UFL team to their first victory. i never really liked losman.

Wait the season out!

I love Jake but he has something going on that’s affecting his game. It’s obvious his arm is losing it’s strength to go down field, he needs to become a mentor now for a rookie. When I heard about Quinn I was hoping for the Panthers to get him but Quinn has a ridiculous contract, Gross needs to resign next year and peppers will most likely leave, giving us money entering the 2010 draft which has a batch of “under the radar” QB’s who we can draft. I like two, Zac Robinson OK state and Rusty Smith South Florida. We can get a potentially great QB without giving up picks. There are only a handful of teams that really need a QB so chances are pretty good we’ll end up with someone worth drafting.

by pantherfan95323 on Oct 14, 2009 9:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Just to clarify

Gross signed a 6 year extension in Feb… so there’s no negotiation to worry about.

The offseason key will be resigning Thomas Davis this season.

Chad Pennington and Jason Campbell both hit FA in 2010

Jason Campbell seems the most logical choice for our team if we’re going for a free agent. He was having a good season in 07 before his lack of targets hampered him. Steve Smith and Kenny Moore could be a good two receiver set, and you can’t understate the awesome power of the Ghost of Wesley Walls at TE

Yeah, QB is set for the season

The offseason is where it gets interesting. Pennington will retire, plus he’s not a fit for the offense, so no go there. Campbell would be a good fit, if he stuck around and learned how to be a QB from Jake, we got our future. Moore is also there, along with a guy in the draft, several very good QB talents, i.e Bradford and Snead, have been struggling, so they might be an option. And there is a trade for a veteran, almost like what we did in 03 with Delhomme. I’m looking forward to seeing what we’ll do in the offseason.

by Flowing Willow on Oct 15, 2009 2:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Campbell

I’ve been throwing his name out there alot.

The other guy I’ve been high on is BYU QB Max Hall.

FYI, Walter Football’s 2010 mock draft has us taking:
2nd Round: Mike Williams, WR Syracuse
3rd Round: Max Hall, QB BYU

I couldn't argue with those two picks.

They are positions of need. As much as I like Kenny Moore I see him no more than a slot receiver. We still need a #2 WR opposite Smitty. Jarrett is obviously not the answer

I love, repeat, LOVE Max Hall for the Panthers

BYU have no recievers, none and he still manages to spread the ball around to all his recievers and TE’s and put up big numbers.

- Currently 6th in the NCAA in QB rating
- Currently 6th in the NCAA in yards
- Currently 6th in the NCCA is cmp % (69.4%)
- Currently 7th in the NCAA in TDs with 13 (More than Jimmy Clausen, Tim Tebow, Zac Robinson or Colt McCoy)

What are Max Hall's strength's/weakness'?

All I know about the kid is he probably has good leadership, beating Oklahoma is no small feat.

by Flowing Willow on Oct 17, 2009 6:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Strengths:
- Good leadership
- Stong arm
- Very accurate

Weaknesses
- Needs to look off the safety more
- Needs to give up on plays more (take sack, throw away etc)

Pennington is "not a fit for the offense"?!

He’s the most accurate quarterback in league history. He’s a PERFECT fit for this offense. That’s the guy I’d like to see brought in here.

by r3 on Oct 15, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Regarding r3 and Pennington

Our offense isn’t a West Coast or a dink and dunk offense, it’s a run the ball up your gut, do it some more, then play-action pass down the field with the vertical passing game. Pennington has shown at this point in his career that he just not physically capable of that. This whole argument might be moot, he hurt his shoulder again, he could be destined for retirement.

by Flowing Willow on Oct 16, 2009 3:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Campbell too

He doesn’t make stupid mistakes and I think he would do well in a system like ours.

campbell needs some encouragement

every time he turns around in washington, the redskins are trying to bring in another qb. they wanted cutler, sanchez, cassel, and others. he’s never been given the true vote of confidence from his leadership. fox would be a good fit for him. on play action and deep passes, you need the arm and mobility to buy time, and campbell has that.

by usana_gaines on Oct 17, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Quinn is an interesting situation

He’s in the wrong system for sure, and he’s also in the coach’s doghouse. Mangini is the one who got rid of Pennington, right? So don’t think that just because he’s starting Anderson that he knows who the best quarterback on his roster is.

Also, the Browns run a short passing game. That’s not how Quinn plays, he needs more of a play-action vertical attack to be effective. I’m not saying he’s a great NFL starter, but put him in the right system and he could develop into a good one.

As for the Panthers, it doesn’t matter. He would ride the bench here and cost us money. I would rather continue to work on Moore, but if it was the offseason I would take a look at Quinn in a heartbeat.

by Cyberjag on Oct 15, 2009 10:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How much is he making?

As a base salary? From what I’ve read, his contract is incentive laden and since he’d ride the bench this year any way, how much would it really cost us? I think he has the skill set to be a decent pro. Wouldn’t mind seeing what he could do with this team.

by DEEZEY on Oct 15, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

$4.5 million is Quinn's base.

If he takes 75% of the snaps he would have gotten a $10 million bonus.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James The Aussie on Oct 15, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That may be the very reason he's riding the bench right there.

There is a reason that Mangini isn’t successful as a coach.

The rumor is out there.

That the owner knows the team can’t complete in a division with Baltimore, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, so why not try and save $10 million.

So once the season is half over they will play him? I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Quinn call them out on that.

Another QB is what we need

I know sometimes Jake gets a lot of heat for all the turnovers, but someone like jeff garcia would be very explosive in this offense. Maybe Quinn but to put it simple Jake isn’t bad when he makes quick decisions not when he holds the ball and forces it when usually " smith" is covered.

Welcome to the blog usxskytrooper

I can’t see Garcia coming now that we have Feeley and I’d still rather have Jake in there for the remainder of the season.

Garcia has always looked awful when he's not in a WCO

Unless we changed our offense to suit his talents, he would quickly look like he did in Detroit or Cleveland, or in his last year in San Fransisco when new coach Dennis Erikson went away from the WCO in favor of his more aggressive, down-the-field approach.

Garcia is a system quarterback. Not a bad one, not a great one either. And he’s 39 years old, for what that’s worth. :)

no huddle

even in jake’s bad games, he runs the two minute drill mistake free. i think we should go no huddle for 60% of the game, and jake would be good, especially on 3 step drops and quick slants. barnidge, jarrett and moose would all be more productive in that set. yes, i said barnidge. anybody seen him lately?

by usana_gaines on Oct 17, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Funny part about the two minute drill...

Jake, for the most part, is the one calling the plays. Makes you wonder if his problem this year is the play calling and not anything physical or mental?

Quinn has a joker as a coach. Glad Mangini is in Cleveland, and not in Charlotte.
I would welcome Quinn in the Panther family. He would do much better with our coaches.
I’ll throw Tebow’s name in the forum and see what reactions we get…

tebow would be perfect

i don’t understand why guys hate on him. he has the arm and accuracy we could use, and he can run. he’s not a run first, guy, though, like vick was. he runs when the coaches say so, but he’s not quick to run. he’s mature, has great work ethic, and he’s a great leader and a high character guy. what qualities do other qb’s have that tebow doesn’t? i think tebow would be great and will prove everyone wrong about him next season.

disclaimer: he’s one more concussion from being a 3rd day pick.

by usana_gaines on Oct 17, 2009 12:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m not hating on Tebow, far from it… I think he’s a great kid, an amazing leader and a great example in the locker room.

However, he does have mediocre arm strength. Not in terms of getting the ball down field, but his passes rarely have a lot of zip on them. Furthermore, who was the last successful NFL QB to come out of a spead offense? Unfortunately, that really devalues him in my eyes.

Only two current starting NFL QBs came out a spread offense: Drew Brees and Kyle Orton. It wasn’t until Brees’ 4th season that he was able to get used of taking snaps under center and making 3 step drops. Orton is servicable, but not amazing.

These are the exceptions, not the rule. Tim Tebow is going to be an amazing player, as a gadget/gimmick player. Packages will be built around him, but his bread and butter plays wont work in the NFL.

Of course, it’s all a mute point, because all indications are if Jacksonville don’t snag him round one, then Dan Snyder will.

Sir Quinn

id be willing to take a shot at quinn for a fourth as Schefter said. Cleveland is a horrible atmosphere for a young qb and with “my way or the higway” Mangini there, its even worse.

by DWillJStewpwn on Oct 18, 2009 6:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm saying wait.

The truth now is that Sam Bradford could very well fall into the second round after this second shoulder injury. Even if he’d need to rehab into the season (assuming there would be surgery) it would be a major coup to net the best QB in the draft.

I know it’s a dream scenario, but it’s a very possible one now.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James The Aussie on Oct 18, 2009 10:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Add in Jevan Snead struggling, Pike's injury, everyone's infatuation with McCoy

We have a very good shot at first round talent in the second round.

by Flowing Willow on Oct 19, 2009 2:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I say forget about Quinn...

and figure out a way to get Jason Campbell, whether it be today or in the offseason. He would be a great fit for the offense because he is more mobile than the statue of Delhomme and can throw the ball deep down field.

I can see it now - Campbell fakes the handoff, drops back, fires deep down field -- and it is caught by Smitty for a touchdown!!!
