Peter King said what about the Panthers and Steve Smith?
If you have read many of my comments you'll know that Peter King is far from my favorite sportswriter for alot of reasons, however, as a Panther fan he said two things today in his 'Monday Morning Quarterback' column that made me mad.
Scratch that, one think that made me mad and another that has filled me with rage.
Let's start with the one that made me mad:
Two of the first-round-bye playoff teams last year, Tennessee and Carolina, are a combined 1-8 this year. And the Panthers had to come back from a 17-2 deficit at home Sunday for that one measly win.
- Measly win? Really? If a team from a big market comes back in the 4th quarter to win the game they're 'tenacious' but when the Panthers do it, then they just got 'one measly win'.
I could let that one slide, after all King is speaking the truth but this second comment was the one which made me furious. Said in reference to the criminal charges that are going to be brought against Tom Cable from breaking assistant Randy Hanson's jaw:
I expect if Cable is found culpable in the attack on Hanson that he'll get more than Steve Smith got last year in Carolina -- two games -- for punching out Ken Lucas.
That's right folks. Peter King just compared Steve Smith with Tom Cable. Lets look at this closer:
Steve Smith: Engaged in an on field altercation with Ken Lucas during practice. The two players were yelling at each other and emotions were high. Steve Smith punched Ken Lucas and broke his nose. Before leaving the facility for the remainder of the day Steve Smith apologized to Ken Lucas, attributed the situation to high emotions though he acknowledged what he did was reprehensible.
The Panthers elected to suspend Smith for 2 games, independent of any league ruling. Lucas chose not to press charges and Smith gave Lucas the ball from his first reception in 2008 as a token, asking again for forgiveness.
Tom Cable: After continually berating and outwardly hating defensive assistant Randy Hanson called him into an office where (allegedly) after a verbal disagreement assaulted him from behind slamming his head into a desk breaking Hanson's jaw and two teeth. Cable was screaming "I will f__ing kill you!" while standing over Hanson and needed to be restrained by defensive personnel. When asked by the media Cable denying anything happened. Hanson chose to press charges for aggrivated assault and Cable has since retained the services of a criminal defense attorney.
In my mind, it is irresponsible and reprehensible that Peter King compared these two situations. I urge any Panther fan who feels like I do email Peter King with your disgust that he chose to characterize Steve Smith in this way. We all know what Smith did was utterly wrong, but a lazy, uneducated comparison is not the way to make a point in an article.
You may email King through his 'mailbag' linked on the article's page: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/10/11/week5/index.html

I share your disgust for King as many people do James
He is such a lazy writer.
1. The Redskins have a very good defense and there was nothing measly about putting up 18 points on that D
2. You are so right about comparing it the Smith-Lucas fracas. Two totally different scenarios and two very different responses. What did the Raiders do to Cable for this incident? Anything? Cable is just big unrepentant bully who is trying to hide his actions. At least Smith man’ed up right afterward.

Regarding no.2
It’s not only what the Raiders did or didn’t do… you’re still looking at a man who assaulted another man and threatened to kill him. Hanson could have been killed if his head hit that desk differently and he was lucky to have just sustained a broken jaw.
Tom Cable is an ex-offensive lineman who is roughly 100 lbs heavier than Randy Hanson (and that’s being generous).
Meanwhile, Ken Lucas and Steve Smith are roughly the same size, and last time I checked the chance of dying from a sucker punch is very, very low.

Not to be rude
But if Peter King is one of your favorite writers, you may need to have a competition to find a replacement. His MMQB is an exercise in him treating players and teams differently from each other. The Panthers are one of many teams who only get a mention when they do something wrong or bad.
Yeah, I am replying to my own comment. James, you are a better writer than Peter King.

Small market teams woes
I dragged myself up out of bed at eight in the morning, which is early for me, hoping to catch the American SportsCenter and the Panthers highlights. 2 hours later, the show was over and still no Panthers highlights!!!!!

Good idea
If someone wants to draft something I can make it a permanent ‘page’ on this site with a link in the sidebar. We could make it an “Open Letter to Peter King”. We could email the link to him…

To elaborate.
Maybe we should make this an offseason thing! Mail it to him right before he posts that yearly article he always makes where he grades all of the NFL teams and gives the Carolina Panthers the shaft, as usual. He never has us winning the division, never has us making the playoffs, and he worships Quarterbacks like they’re the return of Jesus Christ.
Everyone knows what he’s going to put down. “Jake Delhome sucks Bla bla bla Steve Smith is on the downside of his career Bla bla bla, how can the Panthers run the ball or stop the run of both of the lines suck bla bla bla”
But the Patriots? Oh god! Tom Brady is a god! And Bill Bellichick is the best NFL coach in history! Randy Moss and Wes Welker, so beautiful! We’re going to the Super Bowl! :D :D :D

I have to disagree with your characterization of Smith's punch
It was not on the field of practice… It was on the sidelines and was indeed a sucker punch. (please don’t let a year change perspective on this) yes he apologized and handled the situation afterwards differently but Smith’s puchout of Lucas last year in training camp WAS a sucker punch. Caveat = Smith is my favorite Panther but I call them like I see them
Yes, the punch occured on the sideline… immediately following an on field altercation. I never said it wasn’t a sucker punch.
However, sucker punch or not it’s not the same as engaging in an action that could potentially kill and man and threatening to kill him.

Not to mention the whole
Boss beating on subordinate thing. Smitty vs. Lucas is peer vs peer. After reading about the Cable incident I can’t believe he still has a job. He’s going to cost Al Davis a ton of money

He was my bonehead of the week last week.
I had the article all written out, but I decided not to post it till he has a trail. Sure, the evidence is mounting up against him, but I’m not going to believe every word the guy claims that Cable said. To me, it sounds like he is exaggerating just a bit. No one loses their temper to such a point where they say “I’m going to F****** kill you” and a bunch of other stuff. If he really was that bad, then I don’t think he would have been hired. It would have shown itself before in previous altercations we have every day in society today.
I think that Cable simply swung at him out of reaction. Hanson said something that he didn’t like, so he swung at him without thinking. That doesn’t excuse him for what he did, but it does sound like he is exaggerating the story to get him in hot water.
I’d like to hear more from the witnesses. What did they say, and what their version of the story was.

I've also heard Hanson was a snitch for Al Davis
He got Kiffin in hot water, not that he wasn’t to begin with though.

Alot of the information is in the hands of the police now.
Michael Silver’s article was pretty illuminating. I’ll link at the bottom Rev, but basically Randy Hanson was an Al Davis hire and seemed to be untouchable within the Raiders organization. It was a feud between Cable and Hanson that had been brewing since Cable took over as a HC.
As for the witnesses, Silver writes this:
According to a source close to the investigation, three witnesses – Raiders defensive coordinator John Marshall, defensive backs coach Lionel Washington and assistant defensive backs coach Willie Brown – also provided statements to police investigators which corroborated Hanson’s account of the incident.

If all of this is true....
Al Davis strikes again it seems. How could he hire such a freakshow like him to run his coaching staff? It makes you wonder how the Raiders can win any game at all if they act like this.
When they speak about splitting the team into two units, I hope and pray that they mean offense/defense. Because if they mean the defense….my god~ That deserves a bonehead of the week nomination right there.
Like they say: A house divided cannot stand.
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
They meant split the defense.
After reading more into it, it seems Cable’s bright idea was to have the D-line and LBs practice independently from the secondary.

Meanwhile they're writing the playbook while they're on the field...

There you go.

Interesting stuff. I wonder if nothing really happened, or you have 3 coaches afraid for their professional future.

He’s a pretty good writer, he does have a few misconceptions but he’s spot on for the most part.

peter king
i like peter king because his reporting on the rest of the league is pretty good. however, you have to be able to decide for yourself what is bias and what isn’t. if you read him long enough, you can tell where he stands on most issues, and facts do not always get in the way of his arguments. he lived in new jersey for a while and loves the big market teams. he has friends who are agents, on coaching staffs, are retired coaches, and are media big bosses. with that said, much of what he writes is going to have an agenda. for example, when he pumps up some no name to make the team in the preseason, the guy’s agent is probably king’s friend, and king is trying to create some interest as a small favor. i like him because of how he covers the rest of the league, but nobody covers the panthers like csr. nfl truth and rumors is usually more accurate about small market teams than the actual reporters. king is biased, but so are all the sports writers out there.
Just to clarify something though
All fannation.com (and by extension truth and rumors) is a gateway to articles pulled from local media outlets. Any information they get is just regurgiation from the Charlotte Observer, Rock Hill Herald or from Yahoo! sports.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Truth and Rumors… but just wanted to clarify that they’re not presenting original content on their website like CSR, or newspaper’s sites are.
