Panthers Rebound to Beat Redskins 20 - 17

The Panthers didn't exactly light it up in this game but they did just enough to pull out a gutty victory over the Redskins. Here's my quick hits on the game:

  • I have to first give credit to QB Jake Delhomme for getting it done in the end, particularly his hard-nosed bootleg for a 1st down to seal the win
  • Special teams made two huge plays, first with a nice kick off return to ignite the Panthers first scoring drive and the second creating a key turnover on a punt return that resulted in the go-ahead score
  • The Panthers pass rush came to life with five sacks and managed pressure on Redskins QB Jason Campbell most of the day
  • DE Julius Peppers responded with 4 tackles and 2 sacks, including a 2nd quarter safety where he blew past the RT to nail RB Clinton Portis a yard deep in the end zone
  • SS Chris Harris returned in a big way, logging 7 tackles and holding ‘Skins TE Chris Cooley to ZERO catches. Wow, I never imagined how much of a difference this guy could make
  • TE's Jeff King and Dante Rosario proved the Panthers can go down the middle of the field with 3 catches, 52 yards and a TD. King made a nice catch for the Panthers first TD

There's plenty of negative to discuss later but let's savor the win and the salvaging of our season at least for a week.

ahaha

that teal call on ST was bs, but like i said to another redskins fan it did not determine the outcome of the game the redskins could not do anything offensively the entire game.

I heard a bunch of Skin fans complaining about that call

But I think it was pretty genius of Teal to be able to pull that off. Disrupting the catch by pushing his blocker into him… Perfectly legal. That’s a nice heads up play!

I’m so glad the Panthers finally got a win, however I still cannot help but worry about our run game. It is essential to turning our season around, yet it is going nowhere. Hopefully we can build off of this.

I now firmly believe that the offensive line is the key reason we’re 1-3 right now. With the possible exception of the Atlanta game, they have not been good all year, which has lead to Jake getting pressured into making mistakes and the running game going nowhere. We need both of those things not to happen to win.

That aside, great to get a win here, even if it was an ugly one against a struggling team. I can only hope it inspires the team and leads to more.

They are definitely struggling in my view

RG Keydrick Vincent and LT Jordan Gross need to pick it up

+1

That hurry up at the end of the half, they looked clueless. Jake was desperately trying to get them to get in position, yet they acted like he was speaking a foreign language or something

Anyone remember if our O-Line coach was one of the noobs?

Actually, scratch that. He was promoted in 07.

It wasn’t pretty, nowhere close to sexy, hell it wasn’t even a return to form, but dammit we have a win. The defense seemed to come back to life and someone somewhere must have gotten to the ST. Now to repeat this with the offense looking like they play in the NFL rather then Division I college we might just see a real run past the next two games.

I dont care if we won against a redskins team that subbed in their senior citizen grandparents. I’ll take that win.

For the poll, I selected "Other" being Thomas Davis

Again, the work horse for the defense this season came through. 6 sacks, 1 sack, 2 TFL, he was credited for the safety and he defended the key 4th down pass attempt on the Redskin’s last drive.

The defense deserves all the praise on so many levels for the win today, Peppers, Beason, Harris, Davis, Brown… I could go on and on. But, yet again, I feel Thomas Davis was a standout player.

I missed him on the poll for sure

I thought Pep got the safety. TD is deserving of consideration. Can’t edit the poll though unfortunately

If I remember correctly

Peppers penetration on that play was great, he kind of over ran the runningback Portis to get credit for the safety. Atleast that’s how I remembered it.

Pep created the pressure, no doubt.

But Davis officially made the tackle

Finally a light at the end of the tunnel, we just might get to heaven. I also think pep got tired of losing, so he finally decided to show up.

We have some talented players and will win some more games but imo that’s not enough in a league where every team has talent at some level. I’m enjoying the win and I’m happy for the team. However, all today proved is that we are a mediocre team with poor coaching, planning and execution.

My realistic (not optimistic) thought of the day.

Want to know why we won?

32 running plays versus 25 passes. It’s as simple as that.

by Cyberjag on Oct 11, 2009 8:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The running was only effective at the end

I’m still gives big props to special teams. The delhomme pass to King as very nice. I agree it was good the Panthers continued to run the ball even though running was getting nowhere early

Sticking with the run

Committing to the run and staying with it does two things.

First, it sells the play-action in the passing game, which makes Jake’s job that much easier.
Second, it wears down the opposing defenses, which opens the game up to long runs late.

You saw both benefits Sunday.

by Cyberjag on Oct 12, 2009 7:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even if you haven't had much success running

you can still sell the playaction. The key is to have a threat running the ball, with D-Will and Stewie, the threat is there, they have to honor it, if we had per say Cedric Benson or Jamal Lewis back there it wouldn’t be as effective.

by Flowing Willow on Oct 12, 2009 7:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How do you figure?

DeAngelo has like 50 yards. Stewart had maybe 2 nice carries. Those 25 passes are the only thing that moved the ball.

ST are why we won. Teal’s turn over and Moores near TD return are what turned things around.

You forget about time of possession though!

I saw something today very inspiring. Even though the Panthers didn’t run the football effectively till the 4th quarter, we still controlled the clock better than we have in weeks past. We also called a balanced game, and we didn’t get away from the run earlier in the football game like we have the previous 3 weeks.

Once again, we have two more games to get the problems on our offense straightened out. The biggest area of improvement is our offensive line. We cannot get any penetration to save our life, and whether this is because of Albert Haynesworth or our own incompetence is the debate of the week. Is Vincent feeling his age beginning to come on, or was it simply that they aren’t getting their assignments done?

For the most part, our defense has finally picked up and they’re making the stops that they need to make. I’m not too worried about them. But the biggest reason for our victory is our special teams. I hope that Danny Crossman can make this type of play happen more consistently, he may just save his job yet!

im loving the constant pressure on campbell though

hopefully this is a confidence builder and we can start rushing the ball better to compliment our, so far, effective blitzes

Why don't we?...

Throw more consistently to Rosario and King, and pass more to running backs? It seems like both are almost always productive. Yet since Fox’s “preferred style” is to power run and throw down field, instead of doing what works he’d rather throw deep to a double covered or 35 year old receiver, AND run the ball up the middle 30 times for no gain.

I know it’s time for optimism, but Fox’s stubbornness, and lack of versatility really bugs me. We have to find a way to average more that 14 points per game to continue winning.

by southtunnel on Oct 11, 2009 11:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

King is the total package, though Rosario is the more explosive catching threat. I saw a couple of times that Rosario broke into the open field when they sent the whole house on a blitz.

I still think that the most important thing we can do is coach our O-Line back to prominence. Jordan Gross needs to get his act together to protect Jake’s blind side. If he can’t do it, make sure King is over there to give him a helping hand at all times. Getting the ball to our tight ends will help out two, giving the linebackers other things to worry about besides the running game.

We run a play-action attack

You can’t just pass, pass, pass with our attack, we don’t run enough three and four-receiver sets and our offense isn’t built that way. We have a power running game because it’s reliable and it fits our personnel well.

In that sort of offense, you expect to run more than you throw, and you have to convince the defense that you’re always poised to run the ball. Then when Jake appears to hand off the ball the safeties get frozen and don’t slide into coverage as quickly. That means Moose and Smitty are in single coverage rather than blanketed with a deep zone.

If you keep it up, late in the game the lines are tired and you start getting things like 12 yard runs and reliable third and one conversions.

With all that said, I would love to pass more to our backs—I think it’s in keeping with our offense. But we need to have 30 runs up the middle to make it work, whether they get positive yardage or not. It’s not being stubborn, it’s sticking to your strengths. And it’s no coincidence that as soon as we did that this year, we won.

by Cyberjag on Oct 12, 2009 7:26 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You make good points

That bootleg by Jake at the end is a good example. He sold that great and they bit. Now he is waaaay too slow to outrun the S there but what grit to power past him for the first down. Loved it.

But what were "built to do" isn't working

I think we aren’t running well because teams are stacking the box far more than last year. Our o-line is not going to all the sudden man handle 7 or 8 guys the way they did 5 or 6 last year.

Just seems like if we can establish something with short passes, the it will loosen up defenses to allow us to run up the middle

Exactly!!!!!

Defenses will risk the pass to stop the run. Goes back to Jake and the passing game being executed properly.

You guys are missing the point of this entire victory!

There is only one way that the Panthers will be able to become Super Bowl champions. Only one way we will be able to beat the teams we need to beat.

We could 3-3 before you know it

with 0-5 Tampa and the (loss-to-the-Browns) Bills coming up. Then we get to payback AZ for last postseason, and could be 4-3 going to the Big Easy.

From Truth and Rumors

I got this from cnnsi.com truth and rumors.

Carolina coach John Fox has told friends and some associates he expects to be fired once the season ends. It’s not that Foxy is doing a bad coaching job; it’s just that the Panthers are 0-3, and they don’t appear capable of catching New Orleans and Atlanta in the South. But he’s being blamed for sticking with Jake Delhomme and Julius Peppers, two high-priced stars, who aren’t producing right now. If Bill Cowher is going to leave CBS, it would make sense that his former Pittsburgh boss, Dan Rooney, would try to persuade him to go to Carolina.

I posted this because it was obviously before the game. Jake’s stats in the win were similar to Favre’s (kinda) in the Vikings win, but Jake didn’t get a two TD day from one of his RBs. Also, Pep got a couple sacks and was bringing the heat. If we wind up 8-8 or 9-7, it would be a tough call to fire Fox. I might still want that, but take Fox’s philosophy and add another solid OL, a better QB (because we to draft one based on Jake’s age, IMO, even though he’s playing better), and maybe a new OC, and we could be 4-0 at this point next year. Last year the run game wasn’t really crushing people in the first month, (remember when we got 41 total rushing yards vs. the Bucs), but we picked it up and started going for 30 a game.

Fox has already denied this

It’s hack journalism at it’s finest. Czarnecki reported that he heard from someone that Fox told friends/associates something—that’s third hand information at best, presented as fact.

I was skeptical of that when I first heard it

That’s just not something would say even if he thought it. And why would he think that three games in?
