Redskins vs. Panthers Game Day Open Thread
Washington Redskins at Carolina Panthers, Oct 11, 2009 1:00 PM EDT
The bye week is over and we are finally back to some football. I'm thinking the Redskins provide just the kind of red meat the Panthers are needing. Besides these guys are in complete disarray, calling each other out for poor play:
"These guys love each other. They absolutely love each other," Zorn said. "This is just how a team goes. I thought it was great. There's no fisticuffs. There's no shoving and pushing. These guys just, you know, ah, 'You didn't say hi to me.' 'No, you didn't say hi to me.' You know? I don't know really what the discussion was.
"In reality it's just a lot of nudging and posturing. It's just something that goes on. These guys are like brothers. And they care about each other. Seriously, it's not an issue."
When has calling out other players, Pro Bowl players at that, not hurt a team?
The Panthers defense will also have some key players back on the field as LB Na'il Diggs and SS Chris Harris return from injuries. Couple that with the recent acquisition of very-veteran DT Hollis Thomas and we should have a re-energized defense.
The biggest question mark is on special teams. RB Mike Goodson has been ruled out of the game from a concussion suffered during the Cowboys game two weeks ago. That leaves an opening at kick returner that we are still unsure who will fill. Beyond that the Panthers have hopefully been working on their kick coverage. They are currently the worst team in the league and it has been putting our defense in a hole.
If you are watching the game from home please join us and let us know what you think.
This in now an Open Thread!!
After the jump I have suggestions for an alternative strategy to motivate DE Julius Peppers:
I don't think Jon Beason's pep talk is going to work. Here's what they need to do instead. If Peppers hasn't done anything by halftime Meeks should bench Peppers until Pep asks to go back in the game. I think they should just embarrass the guy. The thought here is no way is he going to be a Panther next year anyway so its time to learn to win without him. Bench him and make him prove he is going to play hard to let him sit on the bench and face the ridicule of the fans behind the bench. It will be a leading story all week on ESPN and it will drive Pep nuts. Or it will push him further but who cares if that is his response. We can then trade him with a clear conscious by the Oct 20th deadline for whatever we can get for him.
This is provided he sucks again today against Chris Samuels, a LT he should be able to do something against. Thoughts?

Was it a fumble
What’s the definition of a fumble? Cause it sure didn’t look like the ball hit the ground. Looked like more to me King pulled it out of his arms and ran it into the EZ….
Still bogus on our part that we can’t score 1st and goal. Where’s our O-line?
I can't believe there wasn't a better angle on that play

Then f****ing try something different!
Everyone knows our game plan. (“the NFL is an extremely fast adaptaptive organism” something like that. P.Sims) Nothing new here. But the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Something sure doesn’t seem to sane about this B.S.!

Honestly...no
If we wanted something different then we should have fired him in the offseason.
Too many fans are wanting things out of this team in 2009 that we’ve never had.
Jake’s never been consistent
Fox has never taken risks
Peppers has never had fire
Changes will have to be made, but realistically the philosophy is not going to change in 2009… it’s too late for that
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
If we cant end up 3-3 in Arizona, then I'm all for it.
But, I dont think Matt Moore magically transforms the offense… the problems are deeper than that
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
They mixed the play calling up a little better
in preseason! I know they were just experiments on 2nd stringers. But no K. Moore? No new plays?

I dont really mind losing record..
as long as something is going to happen in the offseason..but as of right now we dont even have a first round pick..
Has Foxy lost his Moxy?
Has anyone read the Truth and Rumors post on si.com where is says that Fox thinks he will be fired? I doubt we would hire Bill Cowher though.
LETS GO PANTHERSS!!!
lets rock emm in the second half
I've been seeing the problem..
but just trying to stay positive…with the playmakers we have on the offense we should be the leading offense in the NFL…
TD
Thomas Davis is playing lights out this year
Nice hit
Especially for such a mis-match in size
A little help...
Can someone tell me if Desean Jackson is playing in the TB-Philly Game?
Well everyone wanted the Panthers to run the ball
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
I heard the commentary too
but that was unnaceptable by Muhammad…. 90% of recievers would have that
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
You can't blame Jake for that one
Moose has stone hands
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
How many recievers in the NFL would have gotten that ball?
I would safely 90% it went right through his hands
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Not because of the INT
I wasn’t ready for Moore at that point because of the INT, but just because after all I had seen from the Panthers at that point on Sunday, I wanted to see some change. I was feeling the game slip away at that point and was hoping to at least see what the kid had. BUt in the end we won so I’m glad they kept Jake in the game.
What I like
I like Everette Brown. Unfortunately, I think I am going to like our would have been first round pick better.
Brown is looking really solid
If he ends up being a 10 sack guy does it really matter who we could have had? Likely we would have had to take a DE 1st round in 2010 any way.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
So the offense has given 14 points
and the defense has scored 2. Freakin Panthers are just pathetic…Okay, I’m going to be on the Fire Fox bandwagon if something doesn’t change soon. This is just pathetic to watch
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
If you take a team with this much talent and it performs at this level
it’s a coaching problem.
+1
If he’s coaching like he’s going to be fired, then you need to get rid of him.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
Fox
If Fox is already thinking he will be fired, how can his heart still be in it?

what makes you think his heart is still in it?

I agree with you there. I was just messing with you. I would put a lot of blame on the O-Line though, they’re just being dominated time and time again. Too much penetration, and the RB has to gain a couple of yards before they even get back to the LOS

Jake
I am still a fan of Jake. Sure he is aging and makes some silly turnovers, but he can’t be to blame for a 1-3 record. He needs more time in the pocket and the running game MUST step it up. Say what you want about him, but the guy knows how to win.
No silly turnovers by Jake today.
With the number of times Gross allowed his man to blindside Jake (NOT acceptable by a ProBowlerOT), it’s a wonder Jake didn’t fumble more — he did once but recovered it himself.
And I don’t think the INT counts as a silly turnover, either — it was ever so slightly behind Moose, but he should have caught it anyway, and definitely! not let it be picked off.
Jake played well today — hope the haters bet off his back for a change.
Big D
Jake played with alot of heart today, but I don’t think anyone has ever questioned that about the man. However, 181 yards, td, and an int against a mediocre team will not get him out of the doghouse just yet.
Still qualifies as leading yet another 4Q comeback.
He’s not Peyton Manning. But I was just hoping we’ll see a week without any posts calling for him to be replaced.
Let’s bask in the warm glow of a well-needed victory.
Tampa Bay and Buffalo are pitiful and should present no obstacles to our getting back to .500. After that, we start to sweat again.
