Cardinals vs Panthers, Impending Doom or Paranoia?
I enjoyed last week, knowing we were in the playoffs with a bye week and watching the other teams fight it out. I didn't really care which teams we would face, but of course did have preferences. Arizona was on top of that list, that is until Monday.
Now knowing we will face the Arizona Cardinals this weekend I believe my self preservation kicked in. Yesterday, I had this feeling of impending doom. As Jaxon pointed out the last time we faced Arizona we had to make a comeback being down 17-3 into the 3rd quarter. At which point we scored finally scored three touchdowns. I also vividly remember Charles Godfrey's heads-up play in stopping the fake field goal that would have resulted in a Arizona 1st down right before half-time.
Then, seeing the Cardinals take care of business against Atlanta only added to my pessimism. Their defense stepped up and played like the game mattered and of course their offense is always lethal. They even found their running game. Giving the ball back to Edgerrin James has breathed new life into their ground game. It doesn't hurt that he's probably fairly fresh after seeing very limited carries for several weeks.
Our defense hasn't been the same down the stretch. In week 7, our defense was ranked 3rd overall and 2nd against the pass. We know rank 18th and 16th respectively. The last two games we were ahead and couldn't put the game away, although we did pull it out against the Saints.
So now I've had an extra day to ponder this uncoming game and the immidate feeling of impending doom has subsided. I won't say this game will be easy, but here are several reason I expect our Panthers to win:
Jake Delhomme: With all the talk here lately about Jake, I figured I start here. At times Jake can be a liability to the Panthers, but definitely in the playoffs I'm happy he's on our team. I'm right between the opinions of Jamie and Jaxon on this one, yet lean more towards Jaxon. Jake Delhomme is a key part of the Panthers offense, replace him and this team is no where near as dangerous (see last season). He bring many intangible to the table that can't be measured. He's a clutch player and will step up to the challenge.
Health: This is why the bye week is so important. We've been missing several key players over the last two weeks as well. This extra week should have allowed them to heal. Provided Kalil and Otah get back on the field our offense should be clicking, and Kemo has been missed stuffing the middle.
Run Defense: Our boys have had an extra week to get healthy and prepare for time game. They fought hard all season to get to this point. Early in the season our run D was tough but had gotten a little lax down the stretch. I expect the playoffs to provide plenty of motivation to get back to form. While the Cardinals are not a running team, Edgerrin can be dangerous. Yet, I expect our front seven will be able to hand him.
Offensive line: Again, injuries here are key, but provided we are back to full strength, our running game has been steller with a healthy front line. The Cardinals will have to sell out against the run or either/both Williams and Stewart will have a field day. The first time we faced them our O-line wasn't completely healthy and hadn't hit their stride. That has now changed and will play a big part in securing the win.

Hopefully Kemo can make up a large differential in putting pressure on Warner.
Also, very cool you are in Chattanooga. I am in nashville.

Usually I'm Doom & Gloom
But here I’m ok.
Matt Ryan finally played like a rookie in the first round. I won’t say it was his fault they lost, but to expect a similar performance from Jake I think doesn’t give Delhommey enough credit for past postseason success.
I would be very surprised if AZ can stop Flash and Dash (or w/e). These guys are killing right now- and if they try to stack the box, Stevesy will burn them.
The team that’s coming to town is good, dare I say even great. But in these high pressure situations, starting with MNF, we have prevailed. Sure we’ve had some breaks go our way this year (so has every good team, except the Chargers), but at home in front of our own fans, I think the Cats can and will take care of the Canaries.

I'm alright so far.
I’m confident that Double Trouble can get the ball rolling. What worries me is their passing game and that this game might turn into a shootout.

Panther D will win the game!
I am now subscribing to Mike Minter’s perspective. The defense wasn’t “exposed”. Our secondary and linebackers are young. They started off at a very high level… swarming to the ball on every play. After awhile the excitement wore off and they just wore down. Now they have had a week to rest, and the excitement of the playoffs will have rejuvenated them!
They will return to early season form this week… but this time with a dominating offense as well!

That's the exciting part
is if both sides play at a high level. Put up 30 point on Offense and allows below 20 on D. Can’t wait

We can talk about Double Trouble, Jake, Smith or even Kemo for that matter
I think the one key player on the Panthers that doesn’t necessarily have to have a big game, but it would be nice to see is Chris Gamble. Where has he been over the last two months or so? Him and Fitzgerald imo matchup well as Fitz isn’t really a burner, but a possession receiver who Gamble should cover well most of the game (especially if he can actually get physical with him).
And while the Cardinals passing attack does scare me, lets realize that unlike the last meeting, the Cards will be playing at the “Bank” instead (sorry Phillies fans) and could be without their second best receiver Anquan Boldin as well.

No one
Matches up well with Fitz. I feel sorry for and DB that has to cover him. With that said…good luck to ya Gamble who ever you are.

A healthy concern
After seeing the Cards beat the Falcons I was torn as to who to pull for in the Vikings/Eagles game. I felt we could handle the Vikes pretty easily if they won… but that would mean an almost certain return trip to the Meadowlands in late January. Not an impossible task, but one I’d prefer we not have to attempt.
Philly winning, on the other hand, meant the Cardinals would return here. The first meeting was no cakewalk. The upside would be that, with a win and and Eagles win, we’d be playing for the conference championship in Charlotte. I think the Eagles have a very good chance to beat the Giants again at home; and frankly I prefer our chances against the Eagles in NC over the Giants in NY.
So, at the end of the day, I think we’re in a very good spot. I just hope we don’t underestimate the Cards. If we don’t, then I’m feeling good about a 2nd SB appearance.

It's why they have to play every game
If anybody takes another team for granted in the playoffs its certain doom. I won’t say that’s is why Atl lost but it could have been. It’s was probably a good thing the Cards won they way they did, that way we know we have our work cut out for us.
