Panthers Delhomme Makes Case for Team MVP

I want to first welcome Jamie Clayton to the blog and thank him/her for putting up a Fanpost that spurred this story. You'll see his post in the right side bar and in it is a poll you should take a look at. He has lots of options but let's first examine the premise of the question and overall gist of the post. First lets set the conversation.

Jamie isn't the only Panther fan that seems to think the Panthers would be better off with a QB of than Jake Delhomme running the show. I see it on other sites and blogs a good bit. In my right sidebar poll you'll even see where the #2 vote getting is ‘QB' for next years draft focus.

So I'm going to go in the other direction and say he is the Panthers MVP for this season. I realize I have been a heavy advocate of RB DeAngelo Williams for NFL MVP (won by Peyton Manning) and I still believe he should have at least gotten some votes. As good as D'lo has been the Panthers would not be the #2 seed without Jake's heroics. Just off the top of my head Jake's late game passes have won at least three games, the Chargers, Packers and Saints games. Being able to drive an offense when the game is on the line is not a quality that is easy to find (just ask the Cowboys).

More after the jump...

Star-divide

If your measure is statistics then sure, Jake is a middle of the road QB. He was 15th in passing yards (3,288), 17th in passing TD's (15) and 22nd in completion % (59.4). In his favor he is 4th in avg yds/completion at 7.9. You also have to consider that Delhomme was 22nd in passing attempts meaning he threw 200 less passes than Drew Brees. This Panther offense focuses more on the run than the pass. Regardless there is no denying that statistically speaking Jake is middle of the pack. But here's my point, half the QB's you would rate higher than Jake didn't make the playoffs.

So let's look at the poll I mentioned in the outset. In the question he points out three of Jake's biggest flaws as a QB:

The three things he needs to work on is:

  1. stepping into the pass
  2. movement in the pocket
  3. checking off receivers

On ‘stepping into the pass' is Jake some rookie just trying to get a start? No, he's been in the league 10 years, been to the SB and has a winning record in the playoffs. This like telling Manny Ramirez he needs to keep his eye on the ball if he wants to play better. If your point is that Jake has floated some passes then I might agree after the 2006 season, but not this year. Of the few Jake has floated it was because the pocket collapsed in front of him preventing a step forward. Overall Jake's arm has been plenty strong and I don't see anything wrong with his throwing motion mechanically.

Jake_rolls_out_vs_bucs_medium

Movement in the pocket - Jake is definitely not the most mobile QB and he rarely scrambles. So you want a Michael Vick at QB? You want a QB that can throw on the run? How about we instead get an o-line that can hold the pocket together instead? I think we can all agree a pass thrown from a stable pocket is more likely to be completed than one thrown on the run while being chased by 300 lb behemoths. No, Jake is not fleet of foot but I still prefer ‘engineering game winning drives' over ‘avoiding a sack' as a preferred QB characteristic any day.

Finally ‘we have checking off receivers', something I have been critical about Jake myself. But upon further examination I firmly prefer Jake to throw the ball down the field and let his WR's make a play than to throw a 3 yd ‘check down' pass on 3rd and 8. That was one thing that drove me nuts about previous OC Dan Henning. Besides, Jake has at least one WR that can go and get those floater passes and turn them into game deciding passes.

One last point, why do you think Matt Moore is next in line to start? Moore is actually the #3 QB behind #2 Josh McCown. The Panthers traded a draft pick for McCown and has confessed they have always been interested in obtaining him. At 29 McCown is 4 years younger than Jake and has pretty extensive experience. I think it's safer to say McCown will get the next crack at starting QB before anyone else. I firmly believe that includes any rookies that might be available at the end of the 2nd round in the upcoming draft. If it's a flashy first round draft pick you want running this team then you'll need to find another team. This Panther organization doesn't operate that way, they prefer to acquire QB's that already have a professional body of work to evaluate. Besides, why would you want to pay 1st round money to a guy who hands off more than he does anything else? Only two other team threw the ball less than the Panthers so more than anything the Panthers need a QB who can manage a game, hit some key passes and instill confidence in the huddle when the team is down. Hmmm...I think I know just the guy, and I have no problem calling Jake Delhomme 2008 Panthers Team MVP.

Thanks for the Fanpost Jamie and know that your opinion is always welcome here. Though I may have disagreed with you this time I look forward to hearing from you again.

Here's one thing we can agree on: Go Panthers!

QB for a 2nd or 3rd pick in the 2010 NFL draft.

Get the job done. Matt Moore needs to earn his job.

Thanks for the introduction to CSR

I am very excited about making my presence known here in this blog. Thank you for the front page today, even with the disagreements.

Jake for MVP? Well, that to me is a very funny joke. I love that you think he should get the MVP. He definitely brings the team together, with his leadership and passion for the game. But as the most valuable, thats where i disagree. Because as you know, i would love to replace Jake.

Let me say this, right now i want nothing more than Jake to be in the pocket. I am very aware of how he plays when it comes to big games and he has a great playoff record. My qualms with Jake come from him as a player and his skill as a quarterback. I feel very confident with 17 running things right now.

I would have to give the MVP to Double Trouble. Not just Deangelo. That is another post.

1. stepping into a pass. After viewing your profile, i see you are not new at watching football and you know the fundamentals of a good quarterback. I absolutely hate it when Jake heaves the ball in the air and prays for our receivers to make a play. Obviously, Jake would not do that if we did not have Smitty and Moose, but i still feel that if we had a quarterback that could step into a pass, deliver the ball effectively into the hands in stride then our receivers could gain even more yardage and more touchdowns.

How many times has Steve Smith had to cut his route short, run a few yards back and jump into double coverage to make a play? I ate lunch with Muhsin at Wofford College in the summer of 04 and [even then, i still thought the same thoughts about jake] i asked him…“Don’t you hate it when Jake makes those crazy passes and you and Steve Smith have to stop your route and catch inbetween coverage or behind you?” and Moose looked up with a face full of food and said “Naw man, it makes us look that much cooler when do catch em”. So i am not hating on throwing up deep passes and letting our players make the plays, I just want to see some form. Jake’s interception number should be a lot more this year, he has been EXTREMELY lucky on many occasions. This could stop if he did just throw the ball up whenever he saw pressure coming.

And it is funny that you compared Jake to Manny. And you chose him as your MVP…i really am thinking you have a strong liking for this ragin cajun. But that is a rediculous comparison. I tried to think of a better baseball analogy, but i just couldn’t haha!

2. the pocket. Jake has the happiest feet in the world. He is the Sergio Garcia of the NFL. Sometimes i cannot watch him. He cannot evade any pressure and does not know how to find space where he can effectively deliver the ball. And to say that i want a Michael Vick….I also think is very funny. I would rather work on our D-Line than our O-Line right now anyway. We need more pressure on opposing QBs. We gave Drew Brees all day to throw the ball, as well as Kurt Warner in week 8.

3.check off receivers. Something that Matt Moore immediately came in and impressed me with during the 2007 season. Jake looks at Steve Smith first every time. That is a great thing. Let us not forget who holds most of the receiving records for Carolina. Kurt Warner does a GREAT job of exploiting Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. I think Steve Smith and Moose split the percentage 65 / 35. Not only that, we have a great tight end in Jeff King and Dwayne Jarrett has shown promise. These are fundamentals. I wish i could just spend a week with Jake and work on these things. Matt Ryan has been great for Atlanta, and he does all three things very effectively. This is why he was Rookie of the Year.

I am also very surprised that you do not know why i would want Matt Moore to start. I know you have seen the season last year? I mean this really puzzled me. Matt Moore is only #3 because of an injury. I can guarantee you that the city of Charlotte would much rather start Matt than Josh. I won’t forget when Matt came on the Panthers radio show last year, the audience erupted. He brought in some light in a very very Dark world last year for the panthers.

Go Panthers!

I mean MVP?! He threw four INTs in Oakland! (Which does have a great secondary, but still, wow!)

They still won that game

Sure the Oakland game was his worst of the year, easily. Yet he’s made twice as many exceptional throws to help win games. It’s hard to argue that D’lo isn’t the MVP as well. He was absolutely awesome this season. In that we can agree too.

Jamie...Jamie....Jamie?

Replace Delhomme? I could understand that IF the Panthers were a bad team this year or if the team as a whole underperformed. But neither was the case and I’m pretty sure no quarterback in the NFL was perfect for all 16 games. Most Panther fans realize he isn’t one of the flashy quarterbacks like Romo and Brady. He also isn’t a quarterback that will put up great statistical seasons like Peyton or Tom. Guess what though? The Panthers don’t need that….all they need is a leader that brings passion and some life to the team (which he does).

I’m just sick of how people nitpick everything Delhomme doesn’t do right. I mean come on, “follow through with his deep balls to Smith”? I’m sure he’s well aware of what it takes to make a perfect throw to Smith, in stride mind you. Fact is, that’s easier said than done. And what wrong with looking at Smith right away? Of course it’s a given that when going deep you want to look off the safeties or give that a pump-fake. I just don’t see the problem with looking at Smith as your first option….Steve Smith has proven time after time that he can be the best receiver when given the opportunity.

Now don’t get me wrong, Delhomme does lack in some areas but you can’t tell me he lacks leadership (probably the most important characteristic for a QB). I’m not saying you said that, but just look at Dallas this year and how much leadership was missed there. Everyone knows leadership is not a learned trait, but one that you’re born with and that’s what Delhomme is, a BORN-LEADER.

As for who was the team’s MVP, it was clearly DeAngelo Williams.

i agree with Jamie

I agree with Jamie that we need a better QB. However, good luck in finding one. I want a QB that can hit Smitty in stride and is better at spreading the ball around, but those QBs are already on other teams.

The Panthers have taken the right approach. Build a better team around him. I mean, if we got Brady Quinn, J. Russell, Matt Leinart, Vince Young, and a couple dozen other QBs in the draft recently, we’d be watching them back-up Jake. Who really knew Ryan would be this good in Atlanta? Because of the way we do business, with four starting QBs in 2007, we still didn’t have a top-5 draft pick because we were still competitive. I want to replace Jake, but if his replacement isn’t on the Peyton Manning, Tom Brady level, then I’ll take my chances with Jake.

And one more thing, we still should’ve called a few more pass plays to Smitty in the Giants game. But when we play them again in a couple weeks, we’ll see how Foxy handles the play calling.

I still maintain its all about winning

Both the Bucs and Ravens won SB’s with less-than-flashy QB’s. I’m sure it still counted and I bet the fans didn’t mind. You want a Peyton Manning? Well look where the Colts are now, at home. For all the $ they paid the flashy MVP he couldn’t pull out the victory. Now what if they instead traded Manning, played Sorgi and spent that $ on defense? Radical thought I know and it doesn’t guarantee andy more wins, but who knows.

exactly

That’s exactly my point. If we had manning, could we afford Beason, Stewart, Williams, Smitty, Moose, Otah, Gross, Peppers, and the other guys who led us to our best record in team history? Probably not… Manning won the MVP because his team was short-handed in most every other position. We don’t have that problem. D-Will had 20 TDs, but could he be the MVP when he has a teammate with 13 sacks and a blocked kick, another teammate who averaged 100+ yards receiving per game, and a QB who managed games and made some clutch throws in tough situations. Our team is the complete package this season, and that’s what makes us so tough, not any one player.

we dont need a GREAT qb like Peyton or Brady, just a GOOD quarterback.

That's where I disagree

I don’t completely dismiss your original premise, but I do like Jake. Yet this statement is where I really disagree. By saying we need a good QB implies that Jake is a bad QB, which I completely disagree with.

I would say, we don’t need a great QB like Peyton or Brady, but a better QB would never hurt.

well. dont know how to delete the last post.

i believe there are three four levels of quarterbacks.
great – peyton, tom brady, drew brees
good – jay cutler, matt ryan, mcnabb
average – Jake Delhomme
bad – david carr and the likes.

i just want a good quarterback. and Jake CAN be a good one. especially at playoff time, he becomes something different. I just want him to do that throughout the whole season. Or at least more consistently.

Peyton had 5 multi-interception games this season

He threw six in last years playoff game loss to the Chargers. Maybe the Colts need a better QB too?

chemistry

Chemistry cannot be “in the words of Bush” misunderestimated. Jake has great chemistry with his players. He is their leader, even when he goes 7 of 27 for 72 yards and 4 INTs. Did you notice that none of the players or coaches criticized him, unlike when McNabb got benched. I remember when the Ravens won the Superbowl with Trent Dilfer, and then “upgraded” to Elvis Grbac. It’s been all downhill for those guys until Joe Flacco. Grbac couldn’t get the guys to respond with his leadership. Just like Mike Vick. Is it kind of odd that no one in Atlanta could catch until Vick left?

I would like a Manning or a Brady, or a QB rating over 85, but Jake’s leadership has done more for us than his arm in some games. So I hate on him sometimes, but you gotta give credit where it’s due.
