List of Notable 2009 DL Free Agents!

With a couple of weeks or so to go until we start resigning our free agents, let's look at some of the top incoming players that may land in the market.

Albert Haynesworth

If it wasn't for Julius Peppers, Haynesworth would be the biggest free agent heading into 2009. As the unquestioned leader of the Titan's defensive line, Albert totaled 8.5 sacks and 51 total tackles while forcing 3 fumbles. At 320 pounds, he's a big man and knows how to throw that weight around. I fully expect Tennessee to do everything they can to keep him, but we're more than able to afford him if he gets loose. We tried to make Julius Peppers the best paid defensive end in the league for crying out loud. I'm sure that Haynesworth would consider it a privilege to play with that kind of money with this kind of team. Albert if you get a chance to read this, don't take their offer! There are plenty of things you can do for us here.

Rocky Bernart

Rocky had a one game suspension to start the season, but the defensive tackle still managed to gather up a quality season with a team that went 4-12 in the regular season. Managing 55 tackles and 4 sacks, he showed everyone that no matter how bad a team is doing, a player can still provide himself a decent season. At the age of 29, he's in the prime of his career, and with his 8.5 sack season in 2005 he has tremendous upside to him if he was to leave Seattle. I'd love to stick this guy in next to Lewis to see what would happen if he makes it to free agency.

Star-divide

Jonathan Babineaux

The Falcons have a huge amount of starters that they have going into free agency, and this is a guy I would at least take a look at if he slips through to the market. Another quality DT that went through his first season as a starter. Really, I think this guy would be a much better player than he is right now if he gained a little bit of weight. He's the kind of player where I think an extra 10-20 pounds would work wonders for him. Even without the weight, he's worth picking up.

Chris Canty

This will be the sneakiest free agent out there. He's in a 3-4 system so he's not going to get that many sacks, which in turn doesn't contribute to getting a huge contract. But he has the same size as Julius Peppers and almost as much athletic ability. If he makes it to free agency, I'd pick him up in a heartbeat. He'd make a great project, and at 6 feet 7 inches and over 300 pounds I'd be highly interested in what would result from that particular project. If he changes to a 4-3 and breaks out for over 10 sacks, you can say I told you so.

Shaun Cody

A member of the infamous Detroit Lions. He only started 4 games last year, so it's tough to know whether he will be any good or not. He hasn't gotten a sack since his rookie season, and he contributed to a lack of a pass rush last year for the Lions. He'll have to prove that he's a little better statistically before he has a shot at getting on a big team like the Patriots or the Panthers. For now though, I think he'll just be resigned by the Lions since they'll be able to get him cheaply.

Tank Johnson

Talks a lot about football but never really does it. Acts like a starter, but is actually a career backup. He contributed a big deal of things to the Cowboys last year, most of it being drama. The Panthers won't sign him. Moving on.

Marcus Tubbs

Here's where it starts to get a bit tricky. Marcus is a member of the Seahawks and he missed all of 2007 after going down from injuries. He's not been healthy his entire career, much like a defensive version of DJ Hackett. However, with a whole year to get himself healthy some team will sign him and see exactly how good this kid is. It's a big risk/reward situation. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. We tried it this year with DJ Hackett and it didn't work, but it's definitely something to consider.

John Thorton

Not a big fan of the Bengals myself. Last player we signed from their team was Landon Johnson, and we all saw how that worked out. He's decent, but he's another player that I believe will finish off his career with his own team. He's 32 years of age, so he might even retire and not get to next year. Who knows? It's obvious he doesn't have much left in the tank though, I'd take Kemo over him any day.

Kedric Golston

Scouts.com spoke of him as a very underrated DT, and I would say that I would have to agree on the basis of physical talent. There is no question that he is going to come into FA as one of the cheapest options out there, and if John Fox tries a mass signing of the DL much like the tactic he used to fix the offensive line, than this guy would be a perfect target.

----------------------------------------------------

If anyone has any other big names, feel free to shout them out. Know this: One of these guys are going to be on your team next year. There is no way John Fox is going to let the defensive line sit like it is and not improve it.

Personally, I would love to see the Panthers pursue Haynesworth if we lose Julius Peppers. After all, the best way to improve a weak position is to add the best player in the business at that position. If we got Haynes and some draft picks to compensate for losing Peppers, our DL might be able to turn this around.

Bye for now! Be sure to check back to see who we get as our assistant coaches.

the line

I like signing Haynesworth and giving Golston a try. I’m not too sure about the others. Is it possible for someone to post the cap figures and duration of contracts for our current linemen? Does anyone think it’ s possible to franchise Peppers and then sign Haynesworth as a FA? I don’t know how much money we have, and I think re-signing Gross is a bigger priority than either of those guys. I ask about the money since we currently don’t have to worry about drafting and signing a 1st rd pick. Also, with Meeks and Haynesworth on board, and then another DL coach at some point, maybe Peppers will want to stay. If he doesn’t, though, then so be it. We’ll be enjoying a 13 win season without him next year.

Haynesworth

Count me among the group that dos not want the Panthers going after him. I can’t exactly say the reason I feel this way but I feel like he would get that contract and then not perform. Maybe I am wrong, but he has character issues and with him being a DT (who are infamous for getting big money and then losing motivation) and having a great year his contract year, he makes me nervous. I would rather we spend our money on mid level/above average DT and a DE after we lose Peppers. I just want a draft pick for Peppers if/when we trade him.

My fears too

getting the money and losing the motivation. His best years have come in contract years… it could be a coincidence, but who knows… and it’s not worth throwing that much money & hoping that he continues to play well. (Plus, Meeks has seemingly gone with ‘smaller’ DTs in his schemes… Haynesworth doesn’t fall into that.)

Golston, I wouldn’t mind the team taking a shot at.

And money wise, just curious, but isn’t the team very close to the cap right now? I thought it was something like $6 million worth of space…

Well, we would have to face that problem with any lineman we sign.

Let’s face it, counting out the NFL Draft and any players we may gain from there, losing Peppers is pretty much losing all our pass rush. As for the contract issues, once we get rid of Johnson, DJ, Lucas, and Julius Peppers it will open up the room a little bit for us to get some work done.

I think Haynesworth would be great here myself, and I also support a mass signing of lesser known players if John Fox wants to try that tactic. Either way, we gotta be aggressive to fix the pass rush.

Trading Julius as well will be key. We need that first round draft pick pretty bad.

I don't think Haynesworth will solve our pass-rush problems on his own though.

And with limited money, I’d rather chase a couple of cheaper guys, because we need a DT & a DE (at least).

I’m not high on the idea of Haynesworth… but I guess that’s just me (like Cassel).

by UtesFan89 on Jan 30, 2009 3:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think that Haynesworth will solve it on his own either.

But I’d still like to have a playmaker on the defensive line. Haynesworth provides that and forces the double-teams on the D-Line that allows blitzes to work much more proficiently.

I agree with you though about chasing a bunch of cheaper guys though, it’s just that I’d like for them to do both. I’m high on Haynesworth.

I'm just afraid of giving him

too much money, and then having him not give it his all (a la Peppers?).
I think a couple of cheaper guys could do better, as long as you pick the right guys (none of this ‘over-the-hill’ or ‘way-out-there-project’ guys)…

Been working on it. Should have it up this weekend.

It’s that kind of response that keeps people coming back to CSR. As for those who aren’t too sure about Haynesworth, I can see your point. I think he’ll paly harder for us after having two consecutive great years, especially since I believe that we are a better football team than Tenn. and we have a better shot at winning it all. However, there is no way to guarantee he won’t pull a Shaun Alexander, and just fizz away. I think that if Fox has the slightest doubt about him at all, we won’t sign him. I wouldn’t mind going with a DT/DE combo that has great upside, but we haven’t done very well at developing players. Maybe Meeks is different. I’m curious to see changes in younger guys like Hilee Taylor, Charles Johnson, and Nate Salley. I also want to see if he can get our CBs to turn up the intensity and focus.

#3 receiver and Cassel

So this is the way I see it. I heard that the Pats won’t franchise Cassel. If franchised, they owe him 14.5 million. Also, the Lions are about to cut Mike Furrey. He had 98 catches in 2006 to lead the NFC. Then the Lions drafted Calvin Johnson and signed Shaun McDonald, so Furrey had 61 and then 18 catches respectively over the next two years. I think he can be a better #3 than Jarrett, and if not, he could be our #4 for a lot less than Hackett. His 18 catches last year were more than Hackett and Jarrett. I also think we should sign Cassel if we can. Adding Cassel would secure our QB position for the future. Furrey would sign for #3 receiver money, so if ends up only catching 15 passes, it wouldn’t be too bad. If we trade Pep for draft picks and cut Lucas, we’ll have money for Cassel and maybe Colston, or another FA DL.

Furrey is probably a #4 at best in the league

though we might use him as a #3 (if we sign him) because Jarrett is a total disappointment right now.

As for Cassel… no thanks. To much money for him… I don’t think he’s that good. I’m not the biggest Delhomme fan, but I think we stick it out with him this year… the other options aren’t very exciting.

Cassell would create a QB controversy

Maybe you’re assuming Jake is gone in this scenario? Too much salary for both. I love the idea of Mike Furry though. Hackett is too injury prone and I bet his knees are about toast. Golston sounds good too. I’m sure the Panthers will bring in a lot of DT’s.

They're gonna franchise him

and it’s gonna cost like $14.65 million.

Cassel, that is.

Agreed.

cassel

I heard the Pats won’t franchise Cassel because because then they will have $30 million tied up in two players. They may want to, but I don’t think they will. The problem with bringing in Cassel (i thought about it after reading Jaxon’s post) is that he wouldn’t be given the chance to learn the offense behind Jake. A young draft pick could, but not a $14 million QB. Not only that, but that’s a lot of money to pay for 20-25 passes a game. That’s 40 passes a game money.

Good points, Jaxon.

I think they will franchise him

even more so if Brady is in fact behind schedule in his recovery (as was being mentioned when the season came to an end).

They'll franchise him.

Trade bait.

I wouldn't be surprised if they keep him for another season as insurance

It may be too expensive though, not sure about their cap situation. They certainly have a tough decision to make
