Tucker's ‘Spicy Peppers' Post Hard to Swallow
I don't usually take issue with journalists that make a few mistakes in their Panthers analysis but in SI.com Ross Tuckers case his "Spicy Peppers' post was too much to ignore. I'm not going to say the whole post was bunk but several of his premises were way off base if not just confusing or ambiguous. Let's start with this cryptic swipe at Julius Peppers agent Carl Carey:
I had never heard of Carey, and based on his handling of the Pepper's situation thus far, I think I understand why.
The tone is that he has handled it poorly but I can't agree with that. If Carey's intent is to get more money, as Tucker later suggests, well the Panthers have already offered to make him the highest paid defender in the league. Otherewise I'm not sure what he means. I do agree with part of the next statement:
This, to me, has everything to do with money and nothing to do with the style of defense in Carolina. Hence the need to include all the 3-4 teams as possibilities. It gives them more potential suitors.
Throwing out the 3-4 defense preference does include more teams as potential bidders but I still think he does want a new style of defense, just not necessarily a 3-4. I still have a hard time thinking this is about getting more money. I have an even harder time with this statement:
My guess is that Peppers' camp is weary of having the franchise tag placed on him by the Panthers, so they chose to fire a pre-emptive strike. The tag would only be about $17 million and would preclude him from getting a long-term deal with significantly more guaranteed money.
Weary of being tagged? Has Peppers been tagged before? I'm not recalling that. Also, only $17 million? Word is he is looking for $20M guaranteed and $50M+ total. Okay lets do the math...get $17M in one year or maybe $20M over 5 (guaranteed $ in case of injury). Isn't this why most lottery winners chose the lump sum option?
I'll give Tucker props for a nice close though:
I certainly hope Peppers and Carey get whatever it is they are looking for. I just wonder if it's worth alienating his home state and the Panthers in the process.
How very true. He's a folk hero in the Carolina's and can really not do much wrong. You can bet though if he goes to a big time market like NY, Boston or LA the expectations would be sky high and he would find his new fan base a lot less forgiving than in Charlotte. Given Peppers fragile psyche I bet he would crumble in the face of mounting criticism when he gets blamed for not doing more to earn his big price tag. Peppers needs to think long and hard before he opens Pandora's box and destroys his pedestal standing in Carolina.

Peps attitude
It seems to me, and apparently 60% of the readers of this post, that he just doesn’t like the coaching staff. I don’t understand how Tucker says this is about the money. I just want to mention that I have not read a single article or quote where Peppers has an issue with the money being offered. I think his price tag is simple, a bigger contract than Jared Allen got last year. If the Panthers have already offered that, and he turned it down, then it’s clearly not about money. I don’t know all the details, but if I was a paid sportswriter like Tucker, you guys would get more from me than just my random opinion (which is what this is…for free.)
Being called out?
Maybe he’s mad that Richardson called him out publically to be a leader, last season?

I think...
he looks at a guy like DeMarcus Ware who gets 20 sacks in a season whereas his career high is 14.5 and he has to answer questions from friends and family why he’s not leading the NFL every year, much less only getting 2.5 like in 2007. Everyone is quick to tell him what a tremendous athlete he is, speed, strength, experience,… and he has no answer as to why he’s not getting more sacks. So in his mind it has to the system, it couldn’t possibly be that he isn’t giving it his all on every play.

I agree with Tucker
But if it is about money, why eliminate the hometown team desperate to keep him in the fold? He would have more leverage among (them) if the Panthers were actively in on the negotiations.
I totally agree on this point. If he had just hinted that he could come back, he increases what other teams would offer to get him. By basically taking Carolina out of the running, he makes his exodus all but certain, decreasing his negotiating leverage.
I think Carey is a joke for allowing this to happen. Peppers’ situation has not gotten any better since this has begun, which is really the only thing an agent should have in mind: the best interests of their client.

Wary - not Weary
It’s a typo. It threw me for a minute, but I believe that’s what he meant. (Note to SI Editors – sometimes you have to do more than spell-check!)

That makes sense
now that you bring it up. That is probably what he meant.

I'm not going to pretend. I hate SI with a passion.
They do their best to cover every sport under the sun, but eventually it comes up as a horrable job. The final straw for me was that piece they did on the Bucs vs Panthers. The article was highly biased towards the Bucs, and it made it all the more sweeter when the Bucs got run over.
I haven’t read another of their articles since then.

I’m not crazy about SI, but I think he is on target. They have treated Peppers really well, and he had a great season. Peppers playing in a 3-4 and being more effective sounds bogus. The truth is he just wants out of Carolina. There have been rumors for years that he didn’t want to be here.
He is not a team player, he doesn’t motivate others… he just thinks about himself. It’s not ironic that he sucked last year when the team was down, and just happen to remarkably bounce back during a contract year.
Force him to stay and he will suck again because he will have no reason to play hard.

south tunnel and jaxon
I never thought about Jaxon’s opinion before. Is it possible that he possibly thinks his successes are because he’s great and his failures aren’t his fault? How absurd. You can’t think like that and possibly excel by changing positions after over a decade of your first position (including college).
Southtunnel, it’s very possible that Pep stinks it up again. If he is franchised, he’ll be in a contract year again, and with some new personnel and schemes around him, he may play better, even if it is for selfish reasons. He may go to another team for more money and prove you right. I don’t know how hard I would play after having someone guarantee me $30 million or so. He might stink it up no matter where he goes. But the Panthers are moving towards a championship with or without him.
I wonder if he looked at the money you get paid for winning playoff games and decided that’s not enough to really play hard, and that’s why he was a non-factor.
