Panthers Notes & Quotes: Ron Meeks Addition
Here's some links I dug up on the Panthers new Defensive Coordinator Ron Meeks.
- Let's start with the article from last week announcing his decision to leave the Colts after HC Tony Dungy retired.
- SBN Colts blog Stampede Blue has of course weighed in on the Panthers hiring Meeks.
- Here's a post suggesting Meeks would have been fired if he didn't resign.
- Though they may be saying differently now, this time last year Meeks was an elite assistant.
- Apparently Meeks was considered for the Redskins HC job last year that was eventually filled by Jim Zorn.
- The Fanhouse weighs in on the Panthers new hire.
- Dan Reeves says a Ron Meeks defense coaches players to "fly to the ball".
I have to admit the more I look at this hire the more I like this selection. Meeks has shown he can get players up for a big game and should bring new wrinkles to the Panthers 4-3 scheme. I think its a win-win for both but only next seasons result will truly matter.
Update: Here's the best post yet on whether Meeks will bring his Cover 2 to Carolina courtesy of Dan Reeves, whom Meeks worked for with the Falcons.
Update #2: Here's another one from Indy discussing the reasons for letting Meeks walk.

My guess
Is that the Panthers wanted a guy with a good resume to execute a pre-made strategy. Trgovac was that guy before, and Meeks will assume that role now. To me he seems like a “toe the line,” rather than revolutionary kind of coordinator.
I differ from the majority of people here, and I am basing this off of nothing but speculation, but I’m not convinced we’ll be seeing the Tampa 2 in Carolina at all. I am assuming that we’ll be seeing similar defenses to what we’ve grown accustomed to.
I’m not saying “Meeks sux!” or “Meeks rulz!,” quite the contrary, actually. I’m saying that he’ll motivate the players, pitch in ideas during game preparation, and help find some quality assistants. All of this while sticking to pretty much the same script on Sundays.
Feel free to point out how wrong I am if this subject gets touched upon during the offseason (or better yet, when the season starts).

I agree
I don’t think we are going to be seeing the Tampa 2 here in Carolina either. If John Fox wanted to get crazy maybe he could gameplan some aspects of the Tampa 2 in at times, but I am not convinced he is that “crazy.” I think it was time for new blood at defensive coordinator and we will just see what happens from here.
Everyone has very high expectations of the defense so there is not a lot of room for error. That makes me feel better because if the defense quality drops off significantly this year and the Panthers miss the playoffs Meeks could be a one year addition. I really hope that doesn’t happen but I am glad there is no “rebuilding” excuse to fall back on if things go wrong.
I don’t think anyone should respond to the same post just copy and pasted on different boards.

I think Meeks is only here for a year, regardless of how we do. If we do win it all, which I am predicting we will do, then he’ll be a head coach somewhere in 2010. If the defense is a top 5 defense after week 9, he’ll be a head coach somewhere. But if we miss the playoffs due to some horrible defense, then he’ll just be fired. Either way, as I do every year at this time, I’m predicting the Panthers win 13 games next year and the Superbowl.
You were pretty close on your predictions last offseason
so I’m hoping you’re even more right this time Charlson. The schedule is tougher in 2009 as there are no Cheifs, Lions or Raiders on it. I hope Meeks stays longer than a year but who knows?
In spite of Fox’ influence I bet we see more Cover 2 from the defense. I can’t imagine Meeks would shelf what he believes in just to take a lateral job. If Fox wanted a DC he could dictate too wouldn’t he have gone with a younger guy looking for his first DC job? Meeks doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would take a job that restricts him.

I agree
Jaxon but it seemed like there were other issues in Indianapolis that would have caused him to be unsuccessful under Jim Caldwell there. Not that they won’t use any Cover 2 but I think maybe he wanted to come down to an established defense and see if he could parlay it into a head coaching job and really the Cover 2 doesn’t seem that different from what we currently run. I have no problem with this, as long as the Panthers are successful.
I agree he will not shelf what he believes in, but I also see John Fox as pretty structured with what he wants and you are right in saying he wouldn’t have taken the job if it restricted him. This should at least be interesting.

my predictions
I was close on my predictions, but I’d rather just win, baby! I still believe in our 3 CBs ability, and I think Meeks will put them in position to succeed. I don’t know what he’s going to do differently than Trgo, but there were times when it seemed the ball would go up, and our DBs would look at each other wondering who’s man that is. That’s okay in pick-up basketball, but not the playoffs. If our guys would just be where they’re supposed to be and master the fundamentals, we’ll be better off down the stretch.
I don’t know if you guys have ever read the book by Malcolm Gladwell called “The Tipping Point”, but we had one last season. At some point in the middle of the season, we tipped over from half-empty to broken on defense. Maybe Meeks doesn’t need to do much more than just get the players focus. Maybe motivation and conditioning were more problems than schemes. I don’t really know, but I know we have a lot of talent on defense, and Meeks needs to get that talent to play well in December, January, and, of course, February 2010.
The bad thing is, we probably won't have 3 cornerx come next season.
Ken Lucas has a big contract coming to him this off-season, and though it’s nice to have 3 starting corners on your roster, I think that Lucas is going to get the boot in favor of Marshall. Just business.

apologize
One more thing…I want to apologize to the readers of this blog who deserve better than to read, as someone called it, “an anger bomb.” I called Brett (BH) Wells at the number listed, and he didn’t answer. As his phone was ringing, I felt that this was pretty silly, and I don’t want to discredit my own opinions by posting angry tirades about others’ opinions. So I will now only focus on the fact that D-Will, who averaged only 17 carries a game last year, will get 20 touches a game next year en route to his first MFL MVP award.
And Smitty will finally complain publicly about Jake if Jake doesn’t start hitting him in stride.
20 for D-Will and 12 for Stewie!
if they avg that amount it will be another playoff season.
Smitty certainly does have reason to complain but I think the fact he hasn’t gives us hope the guy has matured.
Don’t worry about ‘a-bomb’ as we have all moved on. I do my best to not let guys like that upset me. Thanks for your contributions to the blog.

Smith Complaining
The only thing close to complaining I have heard from Smith was on his blog when he posted:
There’s times when T.O. gets 17 or 18 balls thrown his way. I’d be very intrigued to see how I’d do if they threw me 17 or 18 balls.
And really I don’t think he was complaining. But he does make a great point. What could he do with that many looks?
That is interesting
but I don’t think he meant anything about it. I live in a state of perpetual fear that Smith will start complaining or punches someone else on the team. I have no idea how we won two games this year without him.

Dude
no need to apologize, I was not talking about you. I was talking about BH Wells, he just seemed very defensive and was angry with everyone for not liking his ideas. I thought we were having a good discussion and then he came in and dropped what I call an “anger bomb” just kind of flipping out a little bit and wanting people to call him and be a man. Very bizarre.

On a football note
I would like to see Stewart get very involved in the offense this year, I know he actually has the ability to catch the ball pretty well (or at least that is what they said when he came out of college) so maybe that can be an added dimension.
I really think this year is going to be important in the Delhomme/Smith relationship. If Delhomme doesn’t hit Smith in stride (as you said) and look a little more comfortable back there, I can see Smith being more vocal.

I'm ready
for next year already. That playoff loss was much worse than not making the playoffs at all. I feel like the rug was pulled from under a really good team. Does anyone else feel that way? I feel like the season just abruptly ended and we did not even get a chance to play in the playoffs.
I am embarrassed and I am ready for the draft and free agency so we can get a decent look at what next year’s team will look like. August can not come fast enough for me. I am actually excited for preseason games.
I also cant wait
this offseason has so many question marks on what we are going to do. peppers, (sort of delhomme, more the qb position in general.) our CB’s, Defensive line. I am excited for the draft and free agency more than i am the super bowl. I also can’t wait for the preseason games.
me, too
I’m ready for the draft and free agency. I didn’t know this was a big money year for Lucas. Well if we lose him and Peppers, we better have some nice draft picks. Right now we don’t have many. I think Meeks could do better than Trgo with the same roster, but if he does worse with a defense that lost Peppers and Lucas, are we going to say he’s a worse DC than Trgo?
As for BH…I’m not going to play the games. I called and his voice mail came on. It’s his work phone, and the answering machine said this is Brett Wells, and it named the company, and it said that if there was an emergency, call some other number. Either way, I’d much rather You Tube D-Will highlights then continuing to try to call Brett.
I’ll tell you this, though, because of my location, I get more Panthers news from this blog than anywhere else, so if he has news I haven’t heard anywhere else, then post it. And I’m always interested in good analysis, regardless of who it’s from.
One more thing, Bengoodfella said he was embarrassed about the way the season ended. I have a Detroit Lions fan and a Houston Texans fan in my office who let me know their teams have won as many playoff games as the Panthers since the 2005 season.
Personally
I am not going to say the defense is going to be worse because I think regardless of whether we lose Peppers and/or Lucas, we will address the defensive line and the secondary at some point. I would hate to release Lucas one year after he was a good enough person to forgive Steve Smith, but teams really attacked him at points this year.
To me, I think the defensive line has to be addressed in some fashion. We are not going to get anything in return for Ken Lucas since we will release him but I do hope the Panthers franchise Peppers and get a draft pick or two out of the deal. If they do re-sign Peppers (which is not going to happen), I really hope it doesn’t mean Gross does not fit into the team’s plans. Seriously, the Peppers situation could be a good thing because it means the Panthers have a chance to improve the team through the draft, assuming that is what we get in return for Peppers. I don’t think the Panthers will do much with the WR group, to some of my dismay, because they have Ryne Robinson and Jason Carter coming back next year. Of course, neither of those players have ever done anything in the NFL, so we may end up stuck with Dwayne Jarrett as 3rd WR again.
I would not listen to any Texans fans or Lions fans. They have no room to talk about their team.
After reading that the Panthers are high on CJ Wilson, I would be interested to see if they give him a chance at being nickel corner next year but my interest would probably subside if he is not ready to play.

The Panthers next three moves should be
in no particular order:
1 – Fill coaching vacancies
2 – Signing Jordan Gross
3 – Restructuring Jake’s contract
From there they can pursue FA’s and franchise Peppers later in Feb. I think they will part with a couple players such as Ken Lucas, Adam Seward and DJ Hackett.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Part of me
wants to put Gross over the coaching, just to be safe. Because if he hits the FA market, offers will be flying in from everywhere.
